Antibody (2002 Video)
Think Innerspace

Not a bad little Sci-Fi TV Movie starring the wonderful Lance Henriksen. Nano Technology is the way of the future and terrorists have come up with a wonderful new method - hiding the trigger for a bomb inside their bodies so if they are killed, the bomb goes off. Henriksen, an explosives expert and a team of specially trained scientist as sent to deactivate a trigger for a Nuclear weapon that will vapourise Munich and contaminate western Europe, the trigger is of course inside a loopy terrorist's body. To get to it, the team are shrunk down and sent into the terrorist in a little ship. Some nice visual effects inside the body and a reasonably enjoy film, if a little cliqued. But hey, it's Henriksen!

Wonderful!
23 January 2003
I'm a grown woman and i'm not ashamed to say I absolutely LOVED this series. I first saw it nearly 3 years ago now when it was shown on Sky One here in the U.K in 2 hour slots and I fell in love with it. I saw it when it was repeated, and I got it on video for my 19th birthday and I've seen it countless times now.

The Tenth Kingdom is a modern day fairy-tale. It starts out in New York where an ordinary young woman dreams of being something more than a waitress. She meets a talking dog, a wolf man tries to eat her Grandmother and her father gets knocked out by Troll dust and she soon finds herself hopping through an inter-dimensional mirror into one of the other 9 Kingdoms.

There are many little jokes for both kids and adults, and it's wonderful to imagine what would happen if Happily Ever After doesn't last forever. I'd love to see a sequel or at least a book (I have the novel too!) but its sadly unlikely, but catch this if you can as a re-run if you're a kid, or a big kid. You won't regret it.

Stargate Infinity (2002–2003)
What the...?
11 January 2003
When I read some reviews about how it appears to have no relation to SG:1, or even the film apart from having the gate I thought "Nah... It's Stargate! It can't be that bad!" But oh yes, it is. It's completely bizarre and I don't know WHAT the makers were thinking.

I'm sure that in it's own right it's an enjoyable show from a kids perspective, and when I get over the fact that it's so damn silly I might be able to enjoy it as mindless entertainment. Perhaps if I can catch the Pilot Episode It might make a little more sense, perhaps if it were set 50 into SG1's future, maybe more it'd be more believable?

They (2002)
Average Beastie Flick.
3 November 2002
They is about a group of 20-somethings who all experienced "Night Terrors" as children, and suddenly begin to see things again once it gets dark...

After her childhood friend and fellow sufferer of the terror kills himself, Julia meets up with his college friends who were also sufferers and they unravel his last mad ramblings about the dark and the terrors, they start to wonder if maybe he was right, and that none of them is safe.

The creatures were kinda cool, and if films that employ cheap "BOO! Ha ha.. made you jump" tactics are your thing, then you'll probably enjoy it, but the main problem with the film was, as my other half put it, there was no real sense of progression. What's going on is obvious from the onset, and where you get to the point where the characters say "I think blah blah is happenning" I felt like saying "well duh". It's obvious who will die and when, and you never find out any more about what's going on...

It was an ok film overall though, but more rent-worthy than cinema worthy.

The Ring (2002)
Sucky Sucky Sucky..
25 October 2002
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, my two pennies (SPOILERS BELOW!!)

There are a number of things I just plain hated about this film and that just ruined it IMO:

1. The horses thing.. pretty lame, the story from the original was far better and it didn't need changing.

2. The relationship between Rachel/Aiden/Noah - In Ringu, it was kinda implied that Reiko and Ryuji were divorced and that Yoichi was their son (although there is some debate about whether Yoichi knew who his father was). In The Ring there was animosity between Noah and Rachel, but I preferred Ryuji and Reiko's close partnership, after he saw the video they did all their investigations as a strong team, one unit, there's no sniping, and no attempted connection between Ryuji and the kid, the barely even see each other. The Ring played on their relationship too much and had them arguing to make it more interesting, it shouldn't have been needed.

3. The kid. OMG I hated this kid. Kid's role was played up waaay too much, the pictures were lame, and it was an obvious attempt to make a creepy kid 6th Sense style. It touched on what might have been psychic abilities (which were important in Ringu 2) but it did not show his father having these powers which is where he is supposed to get it from.

4. Lack of spirituality. Japan is a very spiritual culture, and visions of the dead, and psychics are perhaps more fitting there, taking the film and putting it into a sceptical culture took all the mysticism out of it. Sadako (Samara)'s mother was supposed to have been a psychic, she was presented to the world be a Doctor who showed off her abilities. It was BECAUSE her mother was psychic that the kid was a little bit strange in the first place.. The Ring just made Samara seem like Carrie. Normal kid, she just got a little angry when she was killed and created the tape. Sadako however was killing people left right and centre before she even died, that was why the Dr (NOT her mother) chucked her down the well.. she also still looked creepy in flash backs.

5. This leads me to more the Samara look.. she just looked like a kid till the end scene, Sadako always looked freaky, that's how you knew she wasn't some ordinary kid. Even the last scene she looked stupid, she looked freaky as hell in the original. I suggest you look up some Ringu pictures so you can see Sadako's evil eye.. it as important that she look like a freak all the way through (and that she actually looked scary at the end).

6. The Voice.. OMG NO! SADAKO DOES NOT TALK! SADAKO DOES NOT TALK! SADAKO DOES NOT TALK! SADAKO DOES NOT TALK! SADAKO DOES NOT TALK!

Nononononononono! This film totally destroyed the mysticism of what Sadako was, Samara was just a kid, she looked normal, she talked, she even said "Mommy". Just NO.

7. This brings me on to the video and the phone calls.. fair enough, the video has to be changed to fit with the stupid horses story, but to me, it just didn't have the same impact as the other video, and it was too long.. It also failed to reproduce the truly terrifying sound from Ringu.. a sound I can't describe but that sent shivers up my spine. The following phone call is supposed to be just that sound NOT A VOICE. And certainly not the voice on a little girl. Also, after Aiden and Noah saw the video, the phone rang... we never knew if it was *the* call or not, but the very fact that only Reiko received a call in Ringu was significant, it lead her to realise that only in the cabin could the call be made.

8. The "Ring": As far as I could tell Ring in the Original referred to the telephone call, there was no talk of the well being the "ring" no kids drawing rings etc etc. I thought it was kinda silly.

9. Boooored. I found it pretty boring, not because I already know the story because I still enjoy watching Ringu, but because they crammed all the action and intrigue of Ringu into very small sections, and padded the film out with the damn kid, Rachel/Noah arguments and other trivial rubbish.

10. The bodies.. The bodies of Samara's victims we rarely seen (what certificate was this??) and when they were, it was too overdone, they were just supposed to look terrified... they were scared to death.

I'm sure there's more I hated about this movie, but there were the top ten.. It really, really sucked. Do yourselves a favour and watch Ringu, Ring 2 and Ring 0, then you'll understand the real story behind it. Now I'm going to watch Ringu again, I feel unclean.

Great Series
19 October 2002
This is a pretty long series, I have it spread over 6 2 hours videos (there are 12 "Chapters" in all, around an hour each). It follows the four Ryudo brothers who suddenly find themselves targets for kidnappings, assaults and threats, they wonder what's going on until they hear a legend of four dragon brothers of the Gyu clan.. are they their descendents? A big bad corporation thinks they are and is determined to reveal their dragon powers and use them for their own means, the series follows the brothers as they struggle to deal with their powers and keep themselves and their friends safe from their enemies. It's a great series up until the last scene which is kinda silly, but it doesn't really spoil things. The animation isn't very good, but it *is* a pretty old anime so don't hold that against it. The dragons look good.

Worth watching for any anime fan of a n00b to the genre - this was the first anime I ever saw and It got me hooked!

A Partial Sequel...
19 October 2002
Chronicles of the Heroic Knight is a semi-sequel to the excellent anime OAV Record of Lodoss War. The first part of the series is basically a re-telling of the events from Records.. and tells the story a slightly a different way. I believe it is the "TV Series" version of the story. The animation is better but I personally prefer the OAV. The Second part is a sequel and follows Spark, an aspiring Free Knight who's hero is Parn, we get to see the original characters and what has happened to them. We also meet Little Neese, daughter of Slayn and Laylia whom Spark vows to protect from her destiny. The animation for this part is great, and it's got a great story just like the OAV, I recommend it for all Lodoss fans, fantasy fans and anime fans!

Spiral (2000)
Great Fun!
19 October 2002
Warning: Spoilers
After reading a review of this film on a Ringu site I just had to get it and I managed to get an import once I got a multi-region DVD player and I don't regret it! A very quirky little film that follows Kirie a cute school girl in a small town in Japan where strange things keep happening, spirals appear in strange places and people take on obsessions with spirals which eventually drive them to their deaths. There's little spirals through the film, you just catch in them out of the corner of your eye, others are bigger and more obvious. You never really find out what's going on, but it's a great little black comedy-horror :)

An end to the trilogy
19 October 2002
Another great Ringu film, this is a prequel, telling you how Sadako became what she was. It starts off like a normal teen movie, she's 17 and at drama school, and in love with her teacher, but strange things keep happening that she doesn't understand, and she has a dark past...

Not very scary like the other films, it's more of a tragic film, and I felt very sad for her, she was subjected to terrible pain for things beyond her control.

It's pretty different to the others, but still worth seeing to understand Sadako's story, and understand WHY she wants people to see her tape and find out about her.

True? My Arse!
19 October 2002
Warning: Spoilers
{MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!}

Ok, first off, there's no way this is true. The makers have probably *said* it was true to promote, when in fact all they are saying is that the story behind it that the team investigates is true, which it may be.

This film is essentially a BWP style documentary, a bunch of students go into a house to study it's paranormal phenomena, not knowing what to expect. The chant a bit, get scared, scream at a chair being pulled over my an obvious wire, and then attempt to exorcise the spirits.

It's pretty cheesy, a little scary at a couple of points, obviously not *real* though. I mean COME ON! Just look at the cheesy little "spirit" thing at the end - puh-leease! Also. uh, who was filing that? They all ran out of the house screaming, yet who was panning around the basement? It certainly wasn't taken from a camera left fallen on the ground. Maybe it was the ghosts filming it! Bwa ha haaa!

Watch it, have a giggle, maybe jump a couple of times, but don't think it's the ULTIMATE PROOF that Ghosts exist ;)

Ring 2 (1999)
Great Sequel
19 October 2002
A great sequel to Ringu (one of the best horror films EVER), it continues from where it left off and goes on the explain a lot of things from Ringu, but if you haven't seen the original you'll probably be as confused as hell!

The film follows Mai, Ryujii's student from the first film, and her studies on the tape, trying to find out what happened to him. She realises Yoichi, his and Reiko's son is psychic like Sadoko and tries to stop him becoming like her and goes back to where Sadako was born to find out more about her and her mother.

It has quite a few scary bits, at points I felt more scared than during Ringu, and the last 20 minutes or so a very tense. Sadako is of course as creepy as ever, and there's plenty to make you jump. A worthy sequel :)

Go watch Ring 0 now!

Gorgeous (1999)
Cute Film :)
19 October 2002
I'm a big Jackie fan, but I got this film more for Qi Shu than Jackie because I think she's adorable :D It's a romantic comedy I guess, and not Jackie's usual thing but he pulls it off well, Qi Shu is the real star though, she's got a great career ahead of her. She provided most of the comic relief along with her friends, desperately trying to get Jackie's character to notice her. Bu is a romantic, you see. She finds a message in a bottle and leaves home for Hong Kong to find the sender, and true love. However, she soon finds she wasn't the intended recipient, but meets Jackie and falls for him instead. Finding she bears an uncanny resemblance to a missing girlfriend of a criminal she poses as her to impress Jackie and to win his heart.

A sweet, lighthearted romance, with a bit of inevitable fighting thrown in :)

Ringu (1998)
10/10
Wow!
19 October 2002
This film is just a sublime piece of cinema, and the only film to ever really scare me, NOTHING has even come close. You absolutely HAVE to see this film if you're a horror fan, and you MUST see it before you see that bloody Hollywood remake, it's just a damn shame it was never released in the US, so many people have been unable to see it because of this.

Basically, Ringu is the story of a reporter,Reiko follows the story of a video tape that is supposed to cause people to die exactly a week after they saw it, as she finds out more about the history of the video, she and her ex-husband Ryujii are in a race against time to break the curse, and save themselves, and their son.

Some VERY VERY creepy scenes in this, scenes that will stay with me for a loooooong time. If you loved this movie, I suggest you watch Ringu2 and Ring 0 to see the rest of the story :)

It's 2089 and Venus is a thriving Earth colony, but it strives for independance and wars with Earth breaks out. Venus is split into two parts, and we follow a group of friends living on one side of the divide who before the war spent their time racing motor bikes, but they end up fighting in the war. A young reporter from Earth follows them around and eventually becomes part of the Venusian resistance.

Nice animation, well developed characters and plenty of love loss and struggle ,makes for a great film, worth watching if you're an anime fan :)

A classic
19 October 2002
Aaah.. 3 X 3 Eyes is a true anime classic, it's got big monsters, a gripping storyline, characters you really care about and great animation for it's age.

Yakumo Fuji is an average kid from Tokyo, by day he hangs out with his school friends, by night he dresses in drag to work in a tran-sexual bar to make some money while his father is away in Tibet (well, ok, maybe he's not *that* normal). One day he runs into (literally) a young girl called Pai who tells him she was a friend of his father's whom she met in Tibet and that she is the last of the Sanjiian - an immortal race with a third eye - and that Mr Fuji told her to seek out Yakumo and get him to help her on her quest for the Ningen-Noso (sp?) an artifact that will make her human.

Just as their start their adventures, Yakumo is accidently killed by Pai's pet Takue, but in her Sanjiian form she gives him back his life.. by taking his soul and giving him the sign of the void. This means Yakumo cannot die which comes in very handy as you will see! The series follows their attempts to find the artifact and stop other bad guys from getting it for their own wicked ends. When it comes to parts 3-5 however, the story gets a little more complicated and confusing (a different company took over I think) but it's still good all the way through, I highly recommend it!

Plastic Little (1994 Video)
Not a bad little anime
19 October 2002
Tita is the young Captain of a Pet Shop Hunter ship, inheriting the position from her father who died on the ship. On her way to work one morning (late as usual) she runs into a young girl, on the run from some suspicious men. Tita vows to help her with her problems.

Nicely animated, obligatory anime girlie breast shots, not very long though. Nothing special story wise, the length doesn't allow for a lot of development character or story wise but it's worth a watch I guess. If you're not an anime fan though it probably won't do much to convert you ;)

Terrible
19 October 2002
Ok, so this is a series, and I admit I have only seen two episodes of it, but I think it's enough to be able to say, as a huge anime fan, that this is just VILE. Terrible animation, stupid storyline, it just looks incredibly tacky and even the biggest anime fans I think would be hard pressed to find any worth in this. If you must watch it, I suggest you just catch it on TV or something, don't spend your hard-earned pennies on this rubbish!

Record of the Lodoss War (1990–1991)
Wonderful!
19 October 2002
Probably my fave anime series of all time (can you guess from my user name? :D) it's a classic fantasy series (13 episodes).

The story follows Parn, a young man desperate to be a brave Knight like his father, he leaves his home town to seek work in one of the great armies of Lodoss to fight the evil forces of the Marmo. Along the way he teams up with a Dwarf called Ghimm in search for a missing Priestess's daughter, a mage named Slayne, his old friend Atoh, not a Priest of Marfa, a thief named Woodchuck and a beautiful High Elf called Deedlit. We see them fight the forces of evil and eventually triumph for the side of good like in all fantasies :D It's got great animation and a wonderful story, for any anime or fantasy fan it's a must see.

Excellent Anime!
18 October 2002
The Guyver OAV is a great series, don't be put off by the original "Out of Control" anime, this is a lot better, and gets you right into the story. You follow Sho Fucamachi, his best friend Tetsuro, and the girl of his dreams Mizuki as he battles against the evil Chronos corporation who want the Guyver Unit that has bonded with him. Along the way they find an ally in Guyver 3 (the coolest of all the Guyvers) and help from the mysterious Mr Murikami.. just what powers does he have? This was one of the first anime series I've seen, and it's excellent, even if you know nothing about the genre, it has a great storyline, and the revelations in the last few episodes are especially gripping. The animation isn't great, but it's 10 years old now, so give it a break! Enjoy :)

(apologies for bad spelling of Japanaese names! I have the dubbed verion ;))

Cubbyhouse (2001)
Enjoyable, but silly
13 July 2002
Called The Cubbyhouse on release in the U.K, The Third Circle is an Australian made horror movie. A divorcee and her three children move back to her native Australia with her, and they start to settle in to their new home, but the two younger children become strangely obsessed with the Cubbyhouse in the Garden. Their older brother Danny, along with next door's teenage daughter Bronwyn discover the Cubbyhouse's gruesome secret - 30 years previous, a man allegedly murdered his two young children there.

There appears to be a demonic spirit in the Cubbyhouse, and Danny and Bronwyn fight to save the children from it and to destroy the Cubbyhouse for good.

Better than I thought it would be, but still pretty cheesy and.. y'know.. Craig McLachlan... but if there's nothing else on, or all the big movie are out to rent already, it's worth a shot, expect to roll your eyes at the silly ending though ;)

Resident Evil (2002)
Very Enjoyable
11 July 2002
Warning: Spoilers
(May Contain Spoilers)

Alice is a happily married woman, living in a beautiful mansion in Racoon City.. at least that's what the outside world is lead to believe.. In truth, he marriage is a sham, she is an undercover agent for the Umbrella corporation, and so is her "husband", they have been placed in the mansion to guard the secret entrance to Umbrella's top secret research lab the Hive.. unfortunately, Alice can't remember any of this, she has amnesia.

The film follows Alice and a team of soldiers going into the Hive to find out what happened to the scientists who lived and worked there, and Alice slowly begins to remember who she really is and what her real agenda is. The team soon discover that strange things were going on down there, and the scientists may not be quite as dead as they thought...

The special effects are great, and the sound-track really works well with the action, and hightens the intensity of certain moments in the film. Comparisons have to be made with certain George A Romero films, especially Day of The Dead, and of course many watch it and judge it on the basis of it's connection to the Resi Evil games, but forget about all that, and just go in to the film with no pre-conceptions. A lot of people didn't like this film, but watch it as a no brainer action film with some great effects and

you'll have fun.
