Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story (2001)
A nice surprise
When I saw "Jim Henson" on the cover I thought of Yoda and Kermit and expected a puppet movie, entertaining but a bit cheesy and very artificial. Well, being a fantasy fan I couldn't resist buying the DVD. Boy, was I wrong about the film... Jack and The Beanstalk is a great fantasy movie. It starts out as an ordinary movie. Then you are told the well known fairy tale. Then you are told the tale from *their* point of view, and the movie just takes off from there. It's a lovely mix of modern life and the classical fantasy world.
No movie is perfect, and of course this one does have it's flaws, but they aren't big and as a family movie it is a great weekend treat. Beware of the length though, nearly three hours.
Death Becomes Her (1992)
Well done but lacking a lot
I watched this movie for the first time tonight, and I have to admit that I'm not too impressed. I do vaguely remember the trailers when it was first released, and I was very curious about it back then. The idea is intriguing and I have to admit that some of the aspects of it were well done in the movie and the special effects are very good, especially considering when the movie was made, but still I think the script was a bit weak. The actors did what they could with the material, but it simply doesn't fly. It could have been so much more. It is, at best, a special effect slapstick comedy. The movie is OK as casual entertainment, but not much more.
