Don't judge it by the cover, because it's really damn funny
29 June 2020
I gotta admit, I was reluctant to watch the movie when it popped out in my Netflix, but man, I didn't expect to laugh so much. It's funny, it's heartwarming, and it's quite insane, but I loved it. Don't expect a masterpiece, but trust me, Will Ferrell is in his element, and the songs are actually pretty good. Just do yourself a favor and watch it, you won't regret it.

Cringy as hell
15 December 2019
Mild, extremely politically correct, and insulting the viewer's intelligence. Perfect example of how PC culture ruins comedy. Asked a few black friends (one is from Nigeria) if they find it good, as it's about a black woman, and maybe I am so uncultured I don't get all the jokes, they said they hated it. But, after all, they are educated people. This isn't a show for educated people. Black or white, you should be ashamed if you like this.

Stand-up that makes you stand up and leave
5 November 2016
I love stand-up specials. I've loved Kevin Hart's stand-up specials so far, even though I have never found his "preshow" and "aftershow" sketches funny at all. He has some again and I gotta tell you, this was so incredibly boring, I barely remember what was it all about. When finally the show started, I got excited - this is where Kevin is powerful. He has a full stadium (!), a great stage, everything looks perfectly prepared. Then, 20 minutes after the start of the show, I realized I haven't even smiled once. I almost forgot I'm not alone in the theater because it was really, REALLY silent. Even the black people next to me were absolutely quiet and were shrugging at the "jokes" - and black people not laughing is a very sad thing for every black comedian.

His jokes were actually stories. 5-minute stories that started from nothing and went nowhere. After an incredibly unfunny 5-minute joke about a woman missing a shoulder, the first 4 people left the theater. And not because it was a dark joke - but because it wasn't funny at all. Kevin was yelling on his golden mic, making poses, yelling again, but was just as funny as a circus clown and that was kinda sad.

Kevin Hart has obviously lost his touch with reality and the money he made got to his head. He was performing as the greatest comedian ever, while he was not even average. If he started out with jokes like these, he'd be getting booed off the stage in 3 minutes.

I have left a theater prematurely only twice in my entire life and this was the third time. It was unbearable. I might download this from somewhere when it comes to DVD just to see how it ends but I ain't paying more for it. Better go to your local comedy club and see an open mic. Most of them will have way better jokes, for sure.

90 minutes of nothing happening
6 August 2016
Let's start with this - I rarely give away 1/10 ratings to anything, and I've been doing music reviews for 6 years now. I occasionally write about movies for magazines and online media but I don't consider myself a movie critic. That's because I like to watch the movies as a fan, as an end user. And after 3 years of delaying, I finally decided to see what this movie is all about.

In a nutshell, it's a the most pretentious, annoying, cringe worthy 90 minutes in the history of modern cinema. The whole story is enough for a 10-minute short film but it's stretched beyond any reason, so that we can watch how broken Cate Blacnhett can be.

Cate Blanchett won an Oscar for this role, which is just... beyond me. If this performance deserves an Oscar, I'll be considering the Oscars an insult from now on. She's unbelievable, annoying, shaky, and desperately trying to win an Oscar, portraying a broken woman.

The story ends with a twist that's so small, you just can't care for it. You can't be surprised by it, you don't care about it, you don't care about the characters at all. There is no character in this movie that's even remotely likable, besides Louis CK's. He is the one and only thing that's good about this whole movie. But no matter how great this guy is, he can't be a reason to sit through these cringe worthy 90 minutes, awfully shallow plot, and Cate Blanchett's portrayal of a broken woman.

If you're like me and you're all about the plot and characters, you'll also hate this movie. I don't care about the camera work or the costumes, I really don't. If the plot is awful, then everything around it automatically becomes awful as well.

Absolutely horrible, unwatchable movie. I urge you to never waste your time with it, unless you are the type of people who like pretentious movies just so that they can say "It's brilliant, and whoever doesn't like it doesn't know anything about cinema". You know who you guys are.

Zift (2008)

No hope for the BG cinematography
23 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
It was a damn month where everybody in Bulgaria were saying "hey, did you watch Zift?! It's an awesome movie and it's great and it's the best BG movie ever!". Well, at last I decided to go and see it, although I had my hope in the BG cinematography long lost. I entered the ugly theater and took my good place in the middle. And damn it, the trailer says it all - "Pineapple peels and sh*ts". That's the best thing in this movie. A banal screenplay, incredibly bad acting, phrases that make you wanna kick someone's head and again this damn post-communist element. You know, all the Bulgarian movies have it.

So better go and watch some stupid low-budget Hollywood movie instead of this crap. At least you could see some better acting and more than 2 colors. Yeah, black & white is banal, especially when it's used without a specific reason. It might be a really nice effect (see "Pi") and it might annoy you so much that you just decide to leave the damn theater half an hour before the predictable end.

Again, about the acting. Yes, it's bad. Yes, most of the actors had never played before. And yes, I can see that clearly.

And hell yes, I paid $2 for that crap but I wouldn't even give 2 stotinki (around 1 cent) to watch this wannabe-a-good-Bulgarian-movie. Although some Bulgarian pseudo-patriots (this means almost all Bulgarians) might like it.

In the end, the good thing. Congratulations to the director - very good and professional job! Unfortunately the good directing is not equal to a good movie.
