Mom (2017)
Predictable and sends a wrong message
Mom is predicatable from the word go. There have been too many revenge for rape of a relative movie to count. Brother, father, husband, blind husband, friends have avenged so far and now it's the turn of a step mom. It's not realistic and feels empty. It's not an awareness movie as there is hardly anyone who has not read headlines or heard commentator scream it out on the news channels. There is nothing new on offer. The message however seems that if courts dont do justice, vigilante justice is the only way out. Which is a wrong message to send out. Vigilante sometimes poor at judging situations might harm the wrong person or themselves, thus harming the victim furthermore. Ankush was a great movie in this genre made almost 30 years ago. The message there was that eye for eye justice will leave the whole town blind. The movie exploits emotional points as much they can, long hospital sequences are there for you to immerse and not question the script.
Sultan (2016)
Implausible plot, childish Sultan
Challenging a wrestler twice your weight (check). Fighting when doctors say you will die (check). Not tapping out despite fainting (check). And all this would look great if there was any good reason for this. Without any strong reason, all this looked like childish arrogance. One of the kite catching jumps was almost 15 feet and landing on hard floor. Despite that no damage. A ridiculous climax where the hallucinating man wins. In parts, movie hits the right chords despite its faults. Specially, the Anushka Sharma Salman relationship. This movie had a lot of potential. But it is reduced to a farce. One time watch.
Dr. Cabbie (2014)
Dumb Movie with Clichéd Breast Jokes and Other bad humor
The protagonist of this movie is a Gold Medalist Doctor from India. He migrates to Canada without even checking if they would allow him to practice. He is this dumb, OK. After knowing that he can't practice in Canada, what would anyone choose driving a cab in a new country or being a doctor and saving lives in your own poor country? Yes, he is that dumb, he chooses to be a cabbie. So, any plot in this movie can not be taken seriously. Now, the jokes, they are offensive and stale. Women with big chests show up everywhere. The migrant cabbie (Kunal) feels at ease in harassing white women, I guess director trying to satisfy fantasies of cabbies. As far as acting goes, the lead, Vinay does not even try. I guess the only audience this movie is made for is the NRIs, But I wonder if people exposed to Hollywood would ever consider watching this.
The Big Short (2015)
Repetitive, preachy with little insights
Absolutely same story of the protagonists (Brad Pitt, Christian Bale and Steve Carrell). They could have rather avoided making each scene from all three guys' perspective. It is like same scene repeated twice. The movie which pretends to be informative, is full of errors. Christian bale in one scene says loan to value is 5. This makes no sense, he probably meant loan to equity. The Jenga tower was made wrong. It was showing AAA to be most risky. Most of the speeches were cynical with little meat. The key climatic speech by Steve had no logic and only rhetoric like "I have no issues in telling you that you are wrong". But do you also have any reasons why the said person is wrong. Avoid, if you possible. Much more interesting documentaries are available on the housing crisis.
The Revenant (2015)
Unbelievable screenplay, slow pace and age old story
There is a scene in this movie where a rider and his horse fall off the cliff. A healthy horse. And a sick, bear mauled, hungry barely surviving rider. Surprise! the horse dies and the rider survives. A man is shown to catch fish with bare hands, eat raw buffalo, go hungry for days. And he still survive fairly strong and able. There is no emotional connect that the audience is able to develop with the characters. The key villain is the only realistic character. Also, annoyingly the protagonist keeps remembering a line by his dead wife all through the movie about how branches shake but not the stem. This line finds no meaning whatsoever in the drama. Still this line is repeated like 10 times. Its such a silent screenplay I fell asleep twice.
Brothers (2015)
Decent action sequence with a vague and sometimes unintentionally funny story
For me Jacqueline Fernandes is the hero of the movie. She makes an impression with very little scree time. The romance and family emotions build between lead man, her and the child are very touching. Akshay Kumar looks old and tired as a fighter. Even his shoulders have drooped and he is no longer the Khiladi we know him to be. It just seems unreal. Siddhartha Malhotra on the other hand looks very promising in the action. The first half is super slow. It seems like you are watching a 1980s DVD is slow motion. The action picks up in second half, but the final scenes are the biggest undoing of the movie. Those who will watch the climax will know why I feel its unintentionally funny. One time watch as this is a sports movie after a long time.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)
Again a brainless flick from SK
If all people can talk about this movie is how cute the child was then one has to realize that the movie was not worth a pence. One failed attempt at the embassy and our hero decides that the official route is closed forever. This was touted as a Salman Khan movie with a script. Well SK has very low standards but even then this storyline can not be called a script. A totally predictable script with a painfully slow pace of unfolding that leaves viewer bored. Also, Kareena is looking woefully old with her dark circles. Also the main storyline, the child seems in no hurry to reach home. They never give her a pen and paper to write or draw something.
Bãhubali: The Beginning (2015)
Awesome in parts
The second half is done so nicely that you want to forget the atrocities done in the first. The hero's impossible waterfall trek sequence was reduced to a lust trip with physics defying moves. Also the topography of the land of Mahushmati is very unclear as within walk-able distance we have huge waterfalls, snow mountains, dense forests and seemingly summer in fort. Also , the romance between Prabhas and Tamannah could have been handled a lot better than Tamannah just surrendering herself. One of song sequence is practically Prabhas stripping Tamannah against her will. Again, this is a movie, else I find it very unbelievable that someone would fall so hard in love just by seeing a mask. Second half is crisp and the war sequence in the climax is just too good. The war machines and the war strategies used are innovative and fierce. Ramaya's portrayal of a strong queen is also commendable. Definitely a must watch for an Indian movie lover
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
No different than the ones before it
A very loose story bound together only for the love of special effects action. The fight between Hulk and Iron man is the highlight of the movie. The climax fight goes for a good 20 minutes or so, it begins to feel like when will it end. Everybody is given lines that are meant to be very philosophical, but end up turning meaningless. The key villain is finally killed by the power of three Vision, Iron man and Thor, but wait no he is alive again in next scene, just to be killed again by a new avenger. There is a point in the movie when one of the character says "I am out of words" after blabbering for a minute, that sums up my feelings for the movie. If you just want action watch your favorite action movie, don't waste time on this soulless flick.
X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
Plot holes
Its not like the movie was not fun, but if half of your crew falls asleep in a movie, something was definitely amiss, I guess in this case it was story. Here is a list of plot holes: 1. Why does Mystique reveal herself before killing someone 2. Why did Mageneto shot Mystique, why, was he planning to carry her body around the globe 3. Where did the super-fast guy disappear after the jail breaking. And if one is breaking prisons just for fun of it, Tyrion Lannister was correct, x men are dangerous 4. When Charles got into Wolverine's brain, how could he talk to himself, I mean either he can talk to Wolverine or see HIS memories or is it Source Code
Jolly LLB (2013)
Its a thriller, so I want to pen down the loopholes
1. 6 dead and only 5 dead bodies, really? 2. Why did the fake witness expose Boman Irani's plan to Arshad Warsi? 3. Within the lunch break in climax, Sub Inspector Rathi and Boman goto Police Station and come back, real quick. 4. S.I. Rathi had caught a wrong person as the 6th victim, how? He had seen the guy earlier. 5. After going through the thunderous accident, the culprit has enough energy to drive again to hit the witness (the sixth victim). And then he left the vehicle at the crime scene. 6. After being video taped by Police, vehicle disappears. This was a huge cover up, no one tried to explain. 7. There is a scene where the accused father threatens Boman to take the case awa from him to Jethmalani or Kapil. Is it a covert reference to BJP and INC big-wigs.
Chakravyuh (2012)
Its too long with oft repeated plot
The movie starts with a great promise of being an out and out action movie with a new daredevil principled SP takes on the Naxal terror. To his credit Jha gave SP a Muslim name which is commendable. But the main stay of the movie Abhay Deol's double cross is just not convincing enough. The twists are predictable. The movie just drags on with it being absolutely clear that there is no logical end to this tale. The songs are completely out of place and unnecessary. However, the movie is scenic and easy on eyes. I would have loved it if it was edited well.
It is a good movie by Bollywood standards and it raises a very pertinent issue of our country. One time watch!
OMG: Oh My God! (2012)
Excellent movie on a very pertinent subject
This movie takes straight on the issue that is supposedly above discussion, Religion. Despite having a powerful messages, the movie is hilarious with its sarcasm of superstition and blind faith. Also, it brings out a lot of oddity in Indian religious practices, flourishing spiritual Gurus and new deities every decade. Paresh Rawal portrays the role of an atheist in a distraught situation to perfection. Also the movie is balanced with only targeting odd religious practices. One of the guru and God is shown to be on protagonist's side (the assumed good side).
It is good to see the Indian cinema has developed guts to make such a movie, a country where Da Vinci Code was banned, a must watch.
Jail (2009)
Shades of Gray
Madhu Bhandarkar in this movie brings out some remarkable characters and one of them is Kabir. Shown as the pawn of a Baba Bhai, a mean character with overbearing friendliness. He turns to help the protagonist just to have him recruited in the Mafia. There is another character of Ghalib who pleads money from another inmate for his mother's operation and uses it to bribe his way to freedom.
This movie is full of such characters who are good and bad at the same time.
The movie begin slowly and picks up pace later, you almost feel bored with the predictable turn of events initially, only when the jail life begins to settle in the real plot unfolds. Also the later part in which the protagonist is released is probably added to soothe the moviegoer. The fees of a lawyer were probably hugely padded with 75K of one hearing for a lower court is unheard off.
