The Tattooist of Auschwitz (2024)
A hard watch - an amazing story of love- but poor lead actors
After watching it and reading all the reviews. I found it to be a beautiful love story. So touching that amongst all of the evil, suffering, violence and depravity ... love could be found and the miracle of finding each other again..
Now to the stuff that didn't sit well with me.
I find myself leaning towards those reviews that stated they felt a lack of emotional depth from the actors playing the main parts.
The younger Lali, who had an English accent ... could have been more effective with a bit of voice coaching by production. .he didn't show any real emotion either, he was a poor choice I'm afraid. . Towards the end it was almost like watching a cheaply made movie ... bad wigs , makeup etc. We live in an era where CGI is so easy to apply( albeit expensive) when making movies. I feel that let the camp scenes down pretty badly. We all know the people who left Auschwitz were skeletal. They were starving, and I didn't see that in any of those towards the end, none of them looked like they'd gone short of a meal or even acted like they were starving! You may think this is just me being picky, but how can you portray the depravity in the inhumanity that happened at those camps without a little bit of realism in how the characters are shown.
The Nazis were portrayed very well. They were brutal evil, psychotic and many scenes were shocking and hard to watch, and so they should be.
I found the end scene with the real Lali very moving. He could hardly speak of what he went through after all those years , it was still so near to him. We have no idea what they experienced in those horrific years within those concentration camps - and after!
Never Again!
Platform 7 (2023)
Utter Tripe!
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!! It really helps if you care about the characters ... especially the protagonist! She was a terrible actress. The writing didn't help. It was very juvenile and aimed at 20yr olds! The idea has been done so many times before . And I can safely say give me Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore anytime.. Ghost was much more entertaining. I found myself fast forwarding through episodes 2 & 3 , only to find the last episode was even more pathetic! I just didn't care. Yes, you may find yourself saying , well why did you watch it then... because I kept waiting for it to fit these fantastic reviews!!
Don't be fooled folks and do yourself a favour .. look for Ghost on a streaming service!
Jane Eyre: Gateshead (1983)
Simply the Best!
I remember watching this with my mother when it was first shown , on a Sunday evening 1983. We looked forward to it every week.
I won't write a review for every episode in this 11 part series. I will say however, that each episode borders on perfection! The cast was chosen by very keen observers of the book. So many scenes are written just as the book and portrayed so well with lines delivered as if each cast member had caught the vision of their character!
Zelah Clark is sublime and oh so underrated as an actress. She tells Jane's story with conviction, power and humility.
Timothy Dalton is just wonderful as Rochester and I haven't seen anyone deliver Rochesters words with so much conviction since. Just perfect!
The fact that they filmed it over 5.5hrs and didn't squeeze it into 3 episodes ( 3hrs). It added to the full telling of this wonderful story, so well crafted in Victorian times by a woman who had to publish it under a man's name!
Thanks 1983 BBC for committing to telling it as it should be told and not like the now adapted scripts to suit audiences in 2024!
Simply the BEST!
Fool Me Once (2024)
Preposterous!
I am always pulled in to anything that stars, Richard Armitage. I have enjoyed the previous Harlan Corben adaptations to the British format. I personally don't see a problem with that, especially as the screenplay had been adapted by Danny Brocklehurst. He's a talented writer. I've lived in Manchester and quite enjoyed the familiarity of the place.
My biggest problem with this series was Michelle Keegan... I don't know where to begin. Her face is so distracting and detracts from the role she's trying to play, and I use the word "trying" loosely! She should really stick to soap operas as she offered no gravitas to the role she was supposed to be playing. The rest of the cast were fair enough ... even though we didn't see too much of Richard Armitage! Joanna Lumley was cool .. I thought she did well.
Adeel Akhtar stole the show ... he is exceptional in everything he is in, and I was drawn in by his character and life circumstances. Him being on the Burkett meds was a reasonable twist.. and I honestly didn't see that coming! His side kick was good and they had good chemistry.
The ending was stupid ...totally unnecessary!
It could have been told in 4 episodes , but like most Netflix series they like to stretch it out!!
Kate & Koji (2020)
A return to good comedy!
As someone who lives in Australia, I only became aware of this due to good old Britbox the other day. I was pleasantly surprised! It felt reminiscent of the comedy shows of years gone by. Brenda Blethyn is just a wonderful actress and a national treasure. Her comedy timing is spot on and the cast all work around her very well. The one liners are good and it's also good to see Victor Maguire in a comedy show again!
I like that it's filmed in front of a live audience, it adds to its charm. Enjoyable and makes me smile... not much to complain about at all.
A short and simple ... it's good, give it a go , you might just enjoy it is all that's required for a review really!
The Holiday (2021)
Dire
I only got past the opening scenes and I knew it was bad ... bad acting, bad script, bad direction and bad writing! I turned it off ... I then came on IMBD.and I was not surprised to find that the other viewers felt the same.
Most of the time reviews vary and it has to be seen to make your own decision.. but please don't even give it your time or effort to make that call.
Three Girls (2017)
Rochdale is not in Yorkshire!!
Realistically portrayed - sad- infuriating - those men are the scum of the earth!!
However some reviewers are confused as to where Rochdale is .......
Rochdale is a large town in Greater Manchester, England, at the foothills of the South Pennines in the dale on the River Roch, 5.3 miles northwest of Oldham and 9.8 miles northeast of Manchester.
Greater Manchester is not in Yorkshire!
1883 (2021)
Oh dear!
I've only got through 2 episodes and I'm bored out of my head!
Eye rolling performances.. The main young actress has immaculate hair , perfect eyebrows and beautiful white teet...she travelling through the frontier for goodness sake .... need I say more! Unfortunately I have to for this review to be posted ...
I won't be watching anymore of this drivel. Bad acting, poor script and aimed at teenagers!
As with Yellowstone ... the scenery wins hands down. No one can beat that ... it is beautiful.
Yellowstone (2018)
It went on and on and on!!
Oh my! I don't know where to begin! It started off fairly well and it just got worse ... along with the incessant swearing!
The performances were good , although Beth's character was way over written and far too annoying to enjoy. You can make someone so unlikeable , that they spoil the story!
I skipped a lot of episodes . Loved the reviews for each episode . Helped me make up my mind if I was going to watch it or not.
Final episode was awful.
Honestly, the only redeeming factor was the scenery , that was stunning! I'd actually give it 10 for that, but I'm not boosting its ratings to give a false rating, so it's a 4 from me.
Kevin Costner can't carry this any longer.
I won't be watching 1883 or season 5 the writing is dire.
Don't waste your time . I'm sorry I did .
Pieces of Her (2022)
Oh dear!
I echo those who have slated the performance of actress who plays the daughter - It affects the whole story - it affects one's tolerance of the script and it just makes it totally and utterly annoying!
I watched episodes 1-3 then cut to 8 ...because that tiny part of me wanted to see what happened without watching the long drawn, stretched out annoying daughter in between!
The Tower (2021)
As bad as they say it is!
Oh dear! What a waste of my time. I got through one episode ..... I didn't care about any of the characters.. and the acting was below parr for all members of the cast!
The Baylock Residence (2019)
Amateur Dramatic Society Stuff
The acting in this film is shocking! I felt I was at the local AD Society supporting the local effort! I honestly don't know why I wasted my time ... maybe because I had it on in the background as I worked from home. I should have checked the IMDB reviews first ...
American Crime Story: Not to Be Believed (2021)
Great performances!
Sarah Paulson is phenomenal! In fact all of the cast are very good. Clive has got the voice to a tee!! Great stuff.
