Invincible: A Lesson for Your Next Life (2023)
After an epic finale, a highly predictable lame start, after Atom Eve's special fail.
It really doesn't matter if you watch this first episode, since it's just an what if episode. It's only about other worlds, other outcomes, other characters. The same old same old multicrap.
If you want to know what happens in this episode, watch South Park, entering the panderverse, instead.
The very few times where you're really watching Invincible, the one we care about, the hero of the series, not some alternate version where nothing is like what we saw in the first season, is when the guy is portrayed as either a silly little boy with no direction or a very decisive guy that only screws up. And big time. And this is the guy that saved all mankind.
The other season ended up with a brave hero, going against all odds, struggling to save his planet, his family, his friends, everyone, even if he had to fight his own father, the strongest being in sight. And still trying to save his father, too.
This season starts by saying that was just an outlier action, that in fact in most cases, he would choose his father's path, which means saying his mother was just a pet, his friends could be killed or maimed with indifference, thousands, including children, could and should be killed for an empire he didn't even met. Somewhere along the conversation we watched, omniman was able to convince Invincible that was for the better.
It makes no sense.
After that, we're presented with some random guy that can offer all the beneifts of every world to every other. He teams up with criminals, murderers, offering them a world of their choosing, taking their word that they would no harm. What?!? But then stops the proceeding because the strongest person ever his being beaten up, because he didn't want that blood on his hands. What?!? And in the process he kills hundreds of people (his dopplegangers and the criminals dopplegangers).
It makes no sense. It's simply too stupid.
I hope this was a mistep. I had the feeling this would happen, after watching the silly special about Atom Eve. Such a good character at first. Sensible, making some mistakes, as everyone does, great powers, some character flaws, as everyone has, trying to find her place in the world, as everyone tries. But her parents are completely out of it. They have a daughter that can creat anything from nothing. Does anyone believe they wouldn't try to have better things? Even if they were bad people, why would they advise her to be dependent of Rex and not them?!? Who on earth wouldn't be at least a little afraid to confront her? Are they comoplete morons? And why is her father so angry with her? What was the problem? I mean, he could be one of those very conservative fathers, but no, he's ok with her sleeping with Rex (they don't seem to meet, though). But he's not ok that she doesn't marry?!? She's very young! And he seems to have this weird idea that she should not be famous as a hero. Really? Is there a father, good or bad, that doesn't want a famous son or daughter to brag about? That character makes no sense. It would make sense if she was a no good, lazy, weak, incompetent, shy girl. Sure. Some parents are so bad, that instead of helping their children, they do that. But with a rock star as a daughter, a god-like creature, unlike any other on the planet, anyone would feel they had some hidden potencial in their genes, that they were almost gods. At the very least, they would try to profit from it in some petty way. Instead, they seem angry at her for no reason.
It makes no sense.
Ahsoka (2023)
So much wasted potencial...
The best character in the series, by far, is the robot, performed by David, the best actor in the series. It's a waste of talent not to have his face there, but even having only his voice is the best.
Rosario is a great actress, but she seems to be on Xanax or something. Ahsoka doesn't matter in her own series.
The little mandalorian girl is one of those characters that in real life would be sweeping the floor, because she makes huge mistakes for no reason and beyond any reasonable tolerance. She's basically an idiot that for some reason is able to break a code that seems very easy for anyone else to do it, but no one had done it.
The General is utterly ridiculous. It's real poor acting on a poorly scripted character. She risks other lives with no good reason and breaks chain of command when she could have asked Leia, as it turns out. The senate comitte does nothing useful. The conspiracy at the factory has no prior story, just shows out of the blue and has no bearing in the rest of the story. What about that useless Morgan, the no good Ezra? Both building to a climax that never happens...
Ray Stevenson, the only good character (and performance) besides the robot, is dead, so that interesting arcane power search will be gone in the next season, I guess. The little girl that follows him like a pet does nothing but small errands. Useless.
Even the highlight, when Ahsoka meets her master, is a waste. Hayden looks tired and unconvincing and makes no point whatsoever that Ahsoka could use after going back to the world of the living.
The series can all be seen in fast forward, because it's all so slow that we get bored (!), even with some nice fx. Maybe it was done for dramatic effect, but it doesn't work. It seems that they are having trouble remembering their lines.
The series is pointless. It makes no difference to watch it or not, even for fans. Unless you just want to watch lightsabers again in a different scenario, in a increasingly silly scneario, where, as we've seen in the past, people can be pierced through the chest and go on with their lives, as nothing had happened.
However, Ahsoka had the potencial to be a really good series. Rosario has the looks, she's usually great. You had Ray, Hayden, Lars, Peter... Bu then you give screentime to a bunch of nobodies that perform useless characters. Great...
I'm definitely not the target audience for this, anymore. I won't be seeing Ahsoka anymore.
Instinct (2018)
Boring, bad acting and poorly written
There's not much to say about it, really. It's just lazy writing. The same problem with every other series that feature a certain kind of characters: writers must feel that by having those characters they don't have to do anything else. Not so. People are drawn to good stories, interesting characters, not this flat phony screwup. Since it has one very good actor, I give it a 4. But without him, I wouldn't even had bothered to watch one single episode, since the trailer says it all. Unfortunately, I bothered, therefore here I am.
Let's try to sum it up: don't watch it. Ever. For any reason. It's a waste of your time.
Black Adam (2022)
Why?
Ruined Hawkman, ruined Fate, stamped two kids in a nonsense part, made the "humans" unimportant, made Black Adam a completely idiotic character that can't even use a door.
All you had to do was to make Black Adam rise, like you did, preferably without much of a story (the original is even worst than the one you told), get him to fight the bad guys (Intergang, last-minute demon, whatever DC's brain meltdown came up with), maybe lose a bit of its grip, be calmed by this new family (the lady and her kid), be the bigger man, overthrow some stupid local government and than settle as a ruler, creating a mixed character, like he should be.
The movie is only saved by The Rock. Hawkman and Fate shouldn't even been there. The newbies are way off. The plagiarism from Marvel movies is too obvious: Wakanda effect, eternium (vibranium) which is never explained, Intergang is just some clowns that are thrown in the air, no explanation, no central command, no ties, no nothing. Tech wizard Hawkman is ridiculous, like a mix of Iron Man, Captain America's sidekick and a whole lot of bad judgement. The girl has a 167 IQ but doesn't get that wind and rusty pipes against Black Adam are worthless. The big guy is just a dumb, worthless clown. Fate has to carry the helmet everywhere so we can see Pierce Brosman's face. He's worried about the death of Hawkman, a character that ressurects. He's a god-like character, but sleepy and not very wise. But as usual, not the actor's fault.
You should have taken a look of how this characters were used in Smallville, great ideas, poor effects - the opposite of what you did here. But the best choice would have been not not have them on the movie. Black Adam is only usefull on its own, or against Captain Marvel. As DC couldn't get Shazam right, maybe on its own against those gangsters and that last-minute demon would be the best choice.
Another waisted opportunity.
Andor: Kassa (2022)
Boring
The story is almost non-existing, the characters are weak and uninteresting... more of the same. I don't get it. There are plenty of good stories out there. Why can't Disney make one?
Let's get back to basics: is this a spy story? A lost soul story? A quest? If you know what kind of story you're telling, you can look for the right ingredients to make it worthwhile. For example, if it's a spy story, people will be trained and have great skills. They will have contacts and do whatever is required to get to where they want. It's clearly not the case, as the main character hesitates and relies on friends. If it's a lost soul story, something must haunt him, a memory, he must feel alone, he should be looking at the stars, the desert or an ocean. If it's a quest, than the music should play accordingly, the main character should be bold and brave... But no. Though there are some hints to each of these, it's never any of them. It's just a guy wandering about. Boring.
Westworld (2016)
Great Series, though the end isn't great
Evan Rachel Wood has an incredible and touching presence and saves every flaw there is in the series. Every single detail of her presence is amazing. Ed Harris is Ed Harris. Saves every movie and series he's in. Thandiwe Newton is great. Great presence, a sensual and intelligent character all the way. Mave was played with subtlety when it could have been just another tasteless GI Jane. Evan and Thandiwe give me hope for the future. Ed does not have much of a future, but the fact that he's being cast here, also gives me hope.
The others... not so much.
The writing was great almost all the way. But something failed at the last minute. The last episode was a complete letdown. We could see the litteral dead end in the previous one, but we still hoped. The last one was disastrous. The only thing going for it was Dolores, the goddess of the sublime.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Not nearly as exciting as the movies, but watchable
Nice, little characters. Not up to their counterparts in the movies, but still mildly acceptable. The elves are not as wise, the "hobbits" are more sophisticated (they must have devolved along the way). Fun fact: elves and hobbits got rid of all the black people along the way, since there is a lot of them in this past, but none in the future depicted in the movies.
Still watching, but the acting is poor and the writing is lazy, as usual. No depth. Just flatlined characters and situations. The only storyline is a quest that takes about 5 minutes to describe... and end.
One can only hope for a better past.
House of the Dragon (2022)
Poor imitation
Boring and stiff. It seems we're watching a school play. The king is no king, the queen is a millennial and the princesses are a poor imitation of the Stark sisters.
I usually say the actors are not to blame, but here even the actors are weak. And if the writers weren't sleeping, I'm betting the audience is.
Prey (2022)
It's boring
Amber was perfect as Kerry in Legion. What happened here? Did they tell her to be a good girl and act like she didn't matter? The movie is boring. Kind of a mix of a low-budget "Dances with wolves" and a unimaginative render of predator. I didn't rate it lower because it has nice landscapes and I like the actress. The dog is there for demographics. Too obvious. The portrait of the indians is very poor. Well, at least it's visible... oh, wait...
The Sandman (2022)
Two series - one inspired by greatness, another made by followers
The first series is magnificent and wonderful. It ends with episode 6 (which is already a somewhat disconnected episode, as well as the 5th, but still great). After that, things are a bit like watching Harry Potter (not a compliment) whenever you're in dreaming and some run-of-the-mill series whenever you're in the real world, with poor story telling and flat characters. The main character of this second series does absolutely nothing of interesting. Others are there just to represent a segment of the population (and they do it poorly). It could be an ad running for a minute and it wouldn't change the story a bit.
We dream of greatness until the 6th episode and then we wake up to an obvious and poor series after that. So, it's a 7 on average. But it's almost a 10 until the 6th and then a 3/4 after that.
Not the actors's fault, as usual. All good there, specially Stephen Fry, of course. But the writers... the writers... I hope that Neil Gaiman had nothing to do with this turn of events.
Why this happens so many times is beyond me. But it's a shame.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
You'll need an umbrella to protect you from all the crap
First season, great. Good ideas, nice execution. Doomsday upon us, nice ring to it.
Second season, short stories, no real storyline. But well, some were good, some were silly politicial coment, but hey, still watchable.
Third season is a parody to itself: nothing really makes real sense. Reality is nothing. And not in a mysterious kind of way, but more like this is so stupid the actors are feeling dumb doing it kind of way.
The end is just "Man, how obnoxious and nonsense can this get?"
Yeah, ruined it for me. And I tried. I really did.
I hope you enjoy it.
Aniara (2018)
Great movie. A song and a poem in awe of existence.
It's a subtle movie, so if you're a simple-minded person, just move on. The only thing failing here, is that it has a bit of a pace like a documentary. That could have been improved, but still, it's so rewarding to watch something with vision, with insight into the human existence. It's really baffling how this is out there and people rush to see Captain Marvel or Spiderman. Why?
Moon Knight (2022)
Another disapointment
It's sad to see how they're ruining all the characters, famous or mostly unknown like Moony here. I read the comics many years ago and they weren't great, so I thought "there's an opportunity", they can surely do better. But no. The series has more trouble to stay on focus than the character.
Again, not the actor's fault. Good job everyone. Writers, director... please, let someone else step in. You're wasting everyone's time.
(I couldn' finish the 3rd episode, it was too painful)
Lost in Space (2018)
Nice, watch it, just don't expect to be a fan
Nice Visuals, some storyline, some notable characters, specially the kid and the mean woman. The final episode was silly and the "message" uncalled for. Create, do not copy. It makes you look childlish. But, all and all, a nice little series to watch before you go to bed.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
I choose to live
I first enjoyed the series as its purpose was more or less clear: to introduce a new path for the original series. But as I watched the third episode of the 4th season, I realized that that particular path had ended long ago and the series had been on a new path, to which I didn't feel in tune any more, but wasn't sure why. It's now clear to me it's trying to send a message, a very strong message, not without its merits, sure, but a little to rainbows and unicorns for my sense of reality. Maybe another time, 900 years from now, in a parallel universe. Until then, dream on, no harm done. I choose to live.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
This was good. At last.
It's wierd, but the most non-sense movie of all is the right one. Forget don't look up, avengers, no way home and all that crap. This is the movie to watch. It's not there to warn you about catastrophic events, it's not a change of your world vision, it's definitely not a remake. It's a wonderful little funny, warm, tender story told gently and kindly. Great moment.
Lucifer (2016)
Partners, but not until the end...
This show was great most of the time. Tom was great, Lesley, Aimee and Rachael too. Others need some acting lessons (not all, but most).
Season 6 is a disgrace. Lazy writing all the way. Sad, really. I don't get why. It didn't seem that difficult. You just had to tidy things up. Amenadiel and Linda would be a nice human couple. Maze would inherit Hell. Chloe would join a convent and Lucifer would become God. And nobody cared about Dan or Eva, for Dad's sake.
It didn't have to be exactly like this, but at least something in the ballpark. But what they come up with? What the Hell?!? Literally...
Titans (2018)
Season 3 - Good, but bad
This is a show that if not called "Titans" would be a nice show. Nice Special FX, nice characters, decent plot, good shooting (pun intended), lots of good props. They could have called it "Young Generation" (not "Next", it's "Taken"). This way they're just pretending to be the Titans, most of the time.
- And why is Alfred trying to pretend he's Bruce?
All and all, you can still enjoy it. Barely, but still enjoyable.
Black Widow (2021)
Same mistakes over and over...
The story would shine in the good old days. It's so old school, so shallow, that it tells nothing about anything.
It reeks of misguided woke. Men are stupid, fat and arrogant. The widows were recruited in Russia, where the black population is 1/2000. Take a look and count how many black (really black) widows there were. And again, warriors are all women. The great scientist is a woman. But the tyrant is a man. Please... too obvious.
You can't think of anything new? You had to take the taskmaster and give it to a little lost russian girl... Really? So many and powerful russian female heroes. Have you read the story about the forbidden zone?
What saves this? Ironically, boobs and asses, cat fights and some nice faces. Sad, just sad...
You can do better, but it will take you a long time...
Loki (2021)
Tom Hiddleston is the man... er, the god.
If it wasn't for Tom Hiddleston this would be a very boring and sad series. But the actor is superb.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
Ridiculous as a political statement, missing the point as a series...
... and still only mildly entertaining. And it ruins Cap's legacy. Thanks for that, too.
(I only gave it a 5 because I think the guy doing Zemo was great, the wakanda's sisters were great and the winter guy was great - and they deserved better)
Arrow: Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part Four (2020)
You have failed this crossover
I... I am depressed on how miserably this fails. Such incredible characters, a plot that was absolutely amazing, all you could ask for was here... But it seems like someone shot this on their backyard, on a rainy weekend. Not even on my worst nightmares could I ever imagined how deeply you would fail.
Well, on the bright side, you didn't spend a lot of money failing. And I now have a lot of spare time to watch other series...
The Flash: Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part Three (2019)
Long live the Antimonitor! Let the multiverse die!
Ryan: "I'm no hero, I'm a husband. And if this the end, I need to be with my wife and kid."
He has a son/daughter and he sees himself only as a husband? Not a father? And he is a Paragon of Humanity... Ok... Nice going, there. What about saving the Universe? Not important... But your wife and kid will die... This guy is a genius, right? A goofy and pathetic genius, like all other genial men in the series, but still a genius... Yeah, right. Nice going, there, too...
Long live the Antimonitor team! Let's end this! There will be no vanishing point in the universe for you guys! ;)
Batwoman: Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part Two (2019)
Let the multiverse die, please!
Tom Welling and Erica nail it. I completely understand why Tom left the DC projects. All the others look like a bad cartoon. Well, Ruby is ok. Lex is ridiculous. The inframen are absurd. Most women are as annoying as the macho's in (very) old movies. That 2D Batman... oh boy... I love superheroes, but this... I still watch Flash, but I'm sensing that will end before the multiverse.
Supergirl: Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part One (2019)
Nice, but always the same unnecessary problems
Worst Superman ever. And it's not the actor, it's the writers.
2D characters - it's like reading comics from the 50's.
"Strong" characters are mostly women, men are pathetic (Barry has been safe for now, but even Oliver has turned into is most pathetic version). And even the women are a ridiculous kind of strong, much like the men were portrayed almost a century ago.
I have given up watching all the series except "The Flash", and will only see this episodes for the Crisis.
DC has the best super-heroes but keeps ruining them. It's heartbreaking. On the other hand, I look at what they did with the Batman in Dark Night, with Superman in Smallville, with the Flash in this series, with Wonder Woman in the movies (there's a really strong woman) and think that maybe there's still hope for DC.
