Evan Almighty (2007)
I enjoyed it
It seems like a long time since I've really enjoyed a movie and laughed out loud in a theatre. This one was great fun. I wasn't the only enjoying it...everyone in the audience was laughing. Wanda Sykes as Rita, Evan's secretary, had and delivered the best lines in the movie. Her timing was spot on. The kids were actually kid like and not little dorks.
The special effects were so well done we wondered which animals were real and which were not. For a change, the crudity was not overstated.
Go and have a good time, laugh and be sure to take your kids. I'm planning to go see it again.
The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006)
Not great, but good for families and people who like warm fuzzies.
We just saw this movie tonight. I was surprised to see it out so far ahead of Christmas, but looked forward to it having seen the first two and enjoyed them. The special effects are as good as before and it was a treat seeing all the actors back. Didn't really miss Bernard until it was over when it suddenly hit me he wasn't in this movie. I was getting kinda irritated with the negative in-laws and thinking I didn't like the whole film until the end which had me laughing and really enjoying myself. Know I'm a sap, but I LIKED the warm fuzzy feeling of family and friends coming together. Martin Short was pretty good as Jack Frost. Tim Allen was perfect as Santa and Mrs. Santa is lovely. If you enjoy seeing movies just for light entertainment, I think you might enjoy this movie.
Elizabeth I (2005)
While well acted, I found it tedious
I must admit that I was not able to watch the entire production because I found it quite tedious and lacking in depth. It was a big disappointment because I'm such a fan of Helen Mirren from Calendar Girls and Jeremy Irons from Brideshead Revisited and The French Lieutenant's Woman.
Mirren and Irons are outstanding actors and would do well here, were it not for the shallowness of the script. It gave me no sense of character development, no intrigue, no sense of space. The first half hour or so all Robert Dudley says is she cannot marry the Duke of Anjou and the other characters mutter something to the effect that she must marry. It wasn't even there historically.
The costuming was beautifully done and Helen Mirren deported herself well as the queen. Still, it gave me no sense of Queen Elizabeth's power or her struggle to maintain that power, and little feeling for the length she'd been in power though it did mention many time that she was old. The dance scene when D'Anjou was behind the screen was characterless. Again, Leicester is just about the only other person there that acted..the others might just as well have been cardboard cutouts for all they added to the scene.
I'll take Henry VIII with Keith Michell or A Man for All Seasons with Paul Scofield any day.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
Awesome
Over three hours of incredible detail and emotion. Expectations fully met. While the ending was nothing like I expected, it was in no way a disappointment. There's so much to take in. Can't wait to see it again...and again...and again...
Still praying for The Hobbit!
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Loved it!
Upbeat, entertaining, left you feeling good. Would like to see more like this...action, story line, Depp was great! Orlando Bloom is an up and coming Errol Flynn. This is one for all ages. Even mindless movie viewers inured by endless blow-em-ups will enjoy this one.
