The Lion King (1994)
Very overrated
I find many people describe this film with extreme fondness. I watched it again today after not watching it since I was a child, maybe a little over ten years ago. I really cannot believe the big fuss and when I read reviews on here to see what everyone loved about it I couldn't really find anything and to be honest it just seemed that everyone was stating the obvious 'the songs,' which were the only terrific thing about the entire film, and the fact that they 'loved it as a child,' but children love what everyone else loves, can you really point out something that can really be admired? Do people not consider the incoherence of the plot? I have seen many reviewers see the film as I do, and they tend to point out the things that people don't seem to realise, such as the extremely annoying characters and the fact that the characters are almost... scrambled-like throughout. It's hardly a story. And I know you could say well maybe I liked it as a child because it is a child's film but as many people have stated it is not - because of the violence and depression. What irritated me most is how the film makes you feel sad at the death of Simba's father, yet Simba himself just runs away and almost immediately seems to feel indifferent towards the situation! He just DOESN'T care! He starts singing hakuna matata for goodness sake!!
I struggle to see why this film is so loved.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009)
I'm very surprised it has such a low rating.
I say that I am surprised, but when I think of the stigma that has been attached to the film and its concept, I think twice.
First of all, I want to comment on Kritsten Stewarts acting. Yes, in the books she has a bit more of a personality but to say her acting is 'wooden' is, in my opinion, all wrong. She is supposed to be like that and in fact the one thing most professional critics agree on is that Kristen Stewarts acting in this film is brilliant.
Sparkly vampires? Who would have thought of such a thing! Well, it's been thought of for many centuries, so lets put that lame condescending argument to rest. Oh, and as for the 'ghastly' messages it promotes, well, I think that those hypocrites should look at films that instead desensitize and not this movie that just promotes a fantastical love story. All I can say is, get over it.
I think that most people rating this film are obviously not its target audience. I have read all of the books and that is one of the reasons I think the films have been so successful; you always want to see the film version. In my opinion, the casting is quite good. Robert Pattinson especially, and although I am no acting expert I don't think he deserves the stick he gets.
All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by this film. I had low expectations because I thought, as many others still DO think, that the film wouldn't need to be to a high standard as it is a guaranteed blockbuster already. This is not true. There is depth to the film and if parts confuse you, I recommend you read the books. The soundtrack is beautiful, a personal highlight for me.
I recommend you see the film and don't go already having this idea of what it's going to be like in your head. Make your own assumptions, and think of it as a film, not something that teenagers are obsessed with and therefore will never be good.
Zombieland (2009)
Incredibly cool
I have just seen Zombieland and I must say that I had high expectations after seeing the trailer and it definitely lived up to them, and maybe even surpassed them. In an industry where mundane horror films are being spat out of the money making machine Halloween after Halloween after Halloween, this comes as a completely refreshing zombie movie. A very funny reflection on America. It is original and delicious from beginning to end. The cast were perfectly chosen, making the film even cooler than it would've been anyway, - had the film makers chosen a more dire cast the plot alone would've been able to make the film average. Eisenberg is especially superb, adding comedic sweetness to a surprisingly gory film (given its 15 rating.) Not at all predictable, the film is definitely worth seeing. My only small criticism is that the subplot between Tallahasse and son could've been brought in to the film a bit more which would have brought even more depth to his character. Otherwise brilliant development between all characters.
Summary: The most awesome action sequences I have seen in a long time. Incredibly cool. Eisenberg is one to watch.
Freddy Got Fingered (2001)
Dependent on your taste.
I was quite surprised to see this film on a few 'worst movies of all time' lists. I watched the film after hearing a lot of people talking about it. I was very confused all the way through. I didn't get its humour, I didn't find the swinging a baby around bit funny, but other people did and I must admit I laughed when I didn't even know why in parts. It's ambitious and it's crazy but I think in some very strange way it works.
I think everyone has heard of this film and it has become a bit of a cult classic just for being... well, bad. "Daddy would you like some sausages" is a very well known and loved quote. If you like extreme 'weirdness' and there is not such a thing as 'too far' for you, then definitely see this movie.
