Yellowstone (2018)
I'll take whatever they're having
I'm lost as to how this has gotten such high praise from people who otherwise enjoy actually great television. There is usually a divide between people who live Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad and those who enjoy CSI or Chicago Fire. Somehow this show serves as the overlap in the Venn diagram.
Great acting. Gorgeous sets. Ripe plot. Garbage writing. Cringy. Cheap. Incoherent.
Just into the third season and abandoning ship, simply can't keep making excuses or expecting them to fix the issues (and seeing even fans say that season 4 gets bad-let's not wait to find out!)
I'm supposed to say more before I hit the required length of review so here it is: Jimmy is the only story that is worth anything.
Feel the Beat (2020)
Far from "feel good"
Ok, let's get past the fact that it's the incredibly tired "adult with aspirations takes advantage of kids' dreams to realize them" plot. While tired, it can still be both feel good and done well (eg Disney's recent "Magic Camp").
The big problem with THIS particular variation on the theme is that the adult is a completely and utterly horrible person. She belittles and demeans then kids consistently throughout the movie WHILE taking advantage of them.
The protagonist is hardly that and in the end has no natural arc into redemption, yet, like is always the case, wins the competition, gets the boy, and lands her dream job. Yipee. Meanwhile little girls are taught to be used and abused. "Feel good" feels a bit off on this one.
