Synchronic (2019)
Interesting topic, flawed execution
I was drawn by the premise, but the number of illogical potholes drove me nuts. Any movie that makes my guts hurt from cringing at the plotholes and because of overt attempts at deep phylosophy... 👎
Anka (2017)
A story with lots of potential, but poorly executed
Having watched the trailer, I was really looking forward to this title, but was again disappointed by Cro cinema. The theme is somewhat similar to the fabulous Pan's Labyrinth, but the similarity ends there. The story just does not flow. I was left with an overall feeling of a choppy, disjointed, first-draft-like work. While I wasn't too bothered by the outdated feel of special effects, the cinematography and the script kept jolting me out of the story with abrupt cuts and a rigid, almost artificial language that tries to sound authentic of that region, but mixes standard Croatian into the dialect making it very unconvincing.
I watched the film with two other adults and one child of 12, and we all came away with the feeling of *meh*. For me, this definitely wasn't worth my time nor money. Giving it 6 stars, as it wasn't unwatchable, but it doesn't deserve a 7 in my book, as that's reserved for movies that manage to entertain me, as this one didn't.
The Tomorrow People (2013)
Good acting, poor writing
If I was to base my review solely on the merit of acting, the vote would be closer to 8 out of 10. Most of the cast is convincing, and I find young Jacob Kogan specially expressive. But the writing is really poor, and lets the cast down. There are so many major plot holes that it was excruciating to watch at times. On top of that, the target audience seem to be teens/young adults, and that really comes across in the scripts. As much as I would like to find out how the story develops, the parts that are relatively credible, I'm afraid I'll be giving up on this series. There's too much to watch to be squandering my time.
The Painted Veil (2006)
Okay, but original plot line oversimplified by Hollywood
I enjoyed this film, but not as much as I expected after having read W. Somerset Maugham's classic novel.
The cinematography is great at times, and the actors give very good performances, though I had a feeling that the script sometimes let them down by robbing the characters of some of their motivation by removing or changing dialogues and the plot line of the book.
I very much disliked the fact that Hollywood has once more turned the plot of a literary classic which is not really a love story (in a Hollywood sense) into one. The screenplay also added a completely unnecessary political element into the plot.
Having said all of the above, if you haven't read the novel, and you like films in which love overcomes obstacles and characters find strength to overcome difficult situations which arise in their lives, then you will probably enjoy this film quite a bit.
