Capitani (2019)
Interesting Story, Not Interesting Machismo BS
Story is interesting and different. Most acting is good. What I couldn't get past, even after I let it slide the first few times, was watching the most unlikable lead character literally yell in the face of the female cop, bully her, grab her by the arm, and ask her to break policy. We can watch CNN for that.
In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)
Ruined by terrible dialogue and accents.
Ok. I kept hoping this would get better, but it never did. I won't give it 1 star because the set and action sequences were well done... but the dialogue and the fake accents... so bad they distract from anything else. I love Michael C. Hall, but as we learned by watching him in Safe, he cannot do a realistic accent. His Philadelphia accent is so off and inconsistent, it makes his character seem like a joke. You can't take him seriously in the stereotypical perv glasses and what sounds like a mockery accent. The dialogue all together is like amateur hour; laughable because no one talks like that and people are constantly stating the obvious as if the audience is dumb and can't read context clues. How did Netflix pick this up? The cast has some solid actors, but even they can't help this D- grade school script.
Speed Kills (2018)
Spanx you very much, Tom Sizemore!
I wanted to give this a 10 for giving me one of the best nights of entertainment ever. I had to take off one star as they should have used less money from the budget on potted palm trees to buy Tom Sizemore some Spanx. The second star is for having to watch John Travolta play both present day (1987) and "late 20's" (1962) versions of the same character, different wig. Now, yes, that also is one of the best parts, except that it means you have to watch "young" Travolta lure in all of the ladies for scenes rated S for Sensuality! Otherwise the continuity, lack of empathy for family, and descriptions of the "sexy speedboat" industry are A+++. The body doubles also deserve recognition as do the editors who just kept playing the vocal tracks even when the actors were not talking on camera. I can sincerely say, Speed Killed me!
Parfum (2018)
Beautiful, haunting truth.
One of the most profound series out there. If you can see and accept more than the dark and bleak outer layer, you can find the truth and depth to the characters and storylines. The reality and truthfulness is the darkness of the story. Execution was perfect- casting, pacing, and stunning cinematography. I will be thinking about this one for a while.
A.P. Bio (2018)
NBC heaps another pile of hot garbage!
What the hell. I had some hope for this show based on the cast but all hope was lost almost immediately. Patton Oswalt must know the lines he is delivering are worse than mediocre and Glenn trying to be Dennis Reynolds in an NBC setting does not work. If anyone gave this more than 3 stars then they probably do enjoy sitcom writing that doesn't require any thought, creativity, or even try to generate a real laugh. I mean I like hot garbage that is so bad you can laugh...but this show is actually trying and it's like they hired all of the rejected improv students to write lines and dialogue that would never exist outside the mind of someone who clearly failed at comedy writing.
Absentia (2017)
Hot pile of garbage - 3 stars for laughs!
I mean, come on. Are the other reviews a joke? Or are they friends of the cast? I had such high hopes for this based on the rating. First, it is allegedly set in Boston (although filmed in Bulgaria). All of the actors have a different accent, none of which are from Boston. They even get local references wrong. As others point out, the lead actress is good, your typical TV actress. Not for movies, but good for TV.
Now back to the show. I gave three stars for laughs as some of the characters are pure entertainment. The lead man constantly talks in a raspy voice and when he is in an action cop scene, looks like a 12 year old boy playing a game.
There is no real suspense and nothing scary. The "twists" everyone is talking about... are obvious things coming. An alleged killer called "the eyelids killer"? Hilarious.
I shame whoever said this show had an X-Files or David Lynch theme. It has none of that. I honestly kept hoping either aliens would kill all of the terrible actors or we'd end up at the Twin Peaks Bang Bang Club and find out we were all just steaming out at the Black Lodge.
No way this will ever air or succeed in the US. Garbage all around.
