RoboCop 2 (1990)
How did the director of Empire direct this mess?
It's hard to believe that the director that brought us The Empire Strikes Back also gave us this pile of nonsense. Irvin Kershner went from directing the greatest sequel ever made to, arguably, the worst sequel ever made in one short decade. I hate this movie so much.
The narrative is flimsy and the entire film is about 30 minutes too long. The commercials and satire that were so funny in the first film are atrocious in this one. The Nancy Allen character, and her relationship with Robocop, was all but abandoned. As were his wife and child, who disappear for the duration of the film. The terrible child actor, that not one adult criminal character would listen to or respect, seems to run the gang at age 12. Cane's girlfriend that, seconds after realizing he is the consciousness inside of a robot, touches his claw and moans sexually, talking about how it will be great with him again. Unintentional hilarity with Robocop appearing to dance, or when his circuit wiring appears like dreadlocks. Unbelievable character motivations and interactions. Hammy overacting by the mayor of Detroit. "Action" scenes that make no sense. Even Weller's voice delivery is bad and doesn't sound like in the first film. And the biggest non-ending I've ever seen. Terrible. Just watch the original masterpiece and be done with this franchise.
Meari to majo no hana (2017)
What a great anime! Studio Ponoc rocks.
What a stunning debut from Studio Ponoc! The animation is gorgeous and multi-layered, and the music is stunning. The themes, while familiar, are done in unique and meaningful ways. I felt small influences of other great animes like Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, and even the great Akira. Some ideas and homages to Legend, The Dark Crystal, and Harry Potter. The plot involves a young girl who finds a magical flower that enables her to be a witch. She finds the Endor College for Witches and embarks upon her training. This was a visual feast, and I cannot wait to see it again. This is the best anime that I have seen in years, and Studio Ponoc is one to watch for the future.
