True Detective: Haunted Houses (2014)
Absolutely amazing and relentless
It's been more than 10 years since the first time I watched this season. Since then, I've re-watched it several times. Only after 5 or 6 times did I notice that I gave a 9 to this episode "way back". But that was unfair. The sixth episode encompasses, almost exclusively, many of the most memorable scenes/dialogues that I keep to this day.
As usual, characterization, ambience, tension, acting, script,... Everything is totally on point. No false notes in my view.
No heavy spoilers here, but I have to go scene by scene to really understand how big this episode is. It puts the cards on the table by dealing so many hands it is hard to fully grasp in the first viewings. Those who have watched the episode at least a couple of times will realise which scenes are these and will have them in their memory.
1) Marty and those two boys
2) The 2 detectives continue to throw it at Marty
3) Rust is digging old things. Dialogues with Guidry and Reverend are the most realistic ones I've ever seen. The latter is on a level of its own as it is longer and so revealing
4) The 2 detectives start to throw it at Maggie
5) Marty and the tampons
6) Charmaine
7) Chief and Marty confront Rust ("Type the * report, man")
8) Visiting Kelly. Speechless.
9) Rust catches Marty
10) Maggie I...
11) Rust meets Tuttle
12) Marty really is an a-hole
13) Chief really confronts Rust
14) Maggie II... Oh boy
15) 2002's knot is untied
Fantastic series, fantastic episode.
10/10.
Lost: Enter 77 (2007)
Very solid
Disclaimer: the potential spoiler is only in my last paragraph.
After dozens of episodes, it is only natural that one ceases to love each new one that comes out. This is one of those that sucks you in, keeps you interested and alert, from beginning to end.
The three plots (one of which, is of course a flashback) are well written and played. Heck, the climax scene is top notch drama, dialogue and emotion, which I was not expecting to see here.
Potential spoiler ahead.
Having said this, two things involving Locke lead to distaste. One, he makes a silly mistake that is not coherent with his character. Two, he provokes an accident (not fully knowing) and this part just seems to be a way to delay answers - it could have played out more realistically in my opinion.
Panic Room (2002)
Keeps you on the edge, fails to deliver
David Fincher is one of my favourite directors. As I would expect, the film is directed and shot beautifully and the plot is intriguing. So intriguing that it keeps you on your toes. But the end fails to withstand the build-up and is actually quite bland. Pitty.
Hitler's Circle of Evil (2018)
Good but too repetitive
I am no historian, so I cannot make any statement regarding historical accuracy. However, the events described in the show are often explained by well regarded historians, who have contributed to acclaimed documentaries about WWII.
What sets this series off is its repetitive nature, of scenes, descriptions and explanations. The change of characters in the middle of the series is as bizarre as Hess's actor and real Hess's actions. Interestingly, this could have been great, as no actors were needed. The use of the enormous volume of real footage would be more than enough.
Killer Joe (2011)
Gritty and brutal, no way around it
This comment does not contain any spoilers nor will be very long.
It should be obvious by now that this not a movie for sensible people. It is not a soft movie, with some suspense and some shooting. It is a hard movie to watch with a brutal but simple plot. It is violent and disturbing.
Having said that, the performance from the actors are superb. They make you believe this is a true story, rolling in front of us to witness. The director does a very good job, the cinematography is good and except for one seen all the action is very believable.
Kudos to the writers, the 5 main characters are a particular kind of f****d up person. And this movie is seriously f****d up. An immersive experience that is hard to replicate, it deserves my 7/10.
Movie 43 (2013)
I thought it would be good.
First you need to know that I don't care for any reviews. Many of my all time favorites are badly reviewed movies so I didn't care with what I've read before watching it.
The problem is that it was nothing like I was expecting. I was expecting stupid jukes, yeah, but not a awkward and idiotic main story and 5 or 6 independent sketches that are presented in the trailer. I can't understand how so many talented and experienced people could thought this was fun and went through with it.
My advice? Watch the trailers as much as you can and you will laugh (all the funny parts are there) because the movie is, in my opinion, plain bad.
Cheers
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
The Legacy of "The Dark Knight"
When you have a movie like "The Dark Knight" which made me leave the theater thinking 1 minute later "Wow. I want to see it again", you know you have something special. Only by that, I knew I would be a little disappointed with this movie - the standards were just too high. In spite of this, "The Dark Knight Rises" is a great movie, with a very good start and ending and great cinematics. Perhaps the closure in the end did not surprise me as it should, because I already knew a similar story of Batman. Perhaps it is Heath Ledger that keeps haunting me with his truly great performance. I just can't give it a ten. But the best thing you can say about it is this: it fully deserves to be in this trilogy and it is with no shame that it closes the legacy left by "The Dark Knight".
