Ripley (2024)
Why is Tom Ridley middle aged?
Part of Tom Ridley's engaging charm is his earnest boyishness and his eagerness to please. So why cast a nearly 50-year-old man in the role? Andrew Scott is a respected actor, but this part is all wrong for him. I've enjoyed both the Matt Damon and Alain Delon versions, where Tom's youthful beauty opens doors ~ or at least leaves them ajar. And the black-and-white photography doesn't work here. Dickie Greenleaf's life was one of technicolor luxury; let us see it in all of its Mediterranean opulence. So very disappointed by the creative decisions that mar this newest version of Patricia Hightower's thriller.
How We Roll (2022)
Such a disappointment
I loved "Crashing" and thought Pete Holmes was both hilarious and touching as a struggling comedian. That's why I gave "How We Roll" two chances, but I was put off by the incessant laugh track (as other reviewers have mentioned) and the dull and lazy writing. Maybe Pete can steal writing talent from "Mr Mayor" or "Ghosts" to save this gutterball of a show.
Theodora Goes Wild (1936)
Irene shines; Melvyn doesn't
Irene Dunne is wonderful in her first comedic role despite the unfortunate casting of Melvyn Douglas as her romantic lead. The part calls for Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, or Joel McCrea ~ a man with enough charm to remain winningly attractive even when irksome.
The film is definitely worth watching for the busybody cast of Lynnfield aunts and neighbors (Spring Byington, Elisabeth Wisdon and Margaret McWade) as well as newspaperman Thomas Mitchell.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Only reason to go is for Godot
Gal Godot remains an enchanting Wonder Woman and she deserves a better script. The first 30 minutes of the film were the most enjoyable; the short flashback to her childhood was pure magic as was our introduction to her new life in DC.
However, the writers did absolutely no research ~ nor even used common sense ~ when bringing Steve to life in 1984. He would have experienced escalators, fireworks, and subways in the 1940s.
Patiently awaiting a sequel that lives up to the 2017 film.
We Are Who We Are (2020)
Odd age range of friends
Older brothers don't typically include much-younger sisters in their escapades. Caitlyn hadn't even hit puberty, yet her brother and his enlisted friends fully accepted her into their circle ~ then allowed her to bring the odd little Fraser along. Maybe there was an explanation, but I must have missed it. Very unlikely circle of friends.
