Locke & Key (2020)
Good story badly directed
A dead father, a house full of magical keys. How do you make that boring, but somehow they achieved just that. It's boring in large parts. The characters are dumb for some reason with no sense of realism or urgency in them.
It's like somebody had already decided this needs to be 10 episodes long when there is barely enough content to fill 4. As a result plot of full of loopholes, characters make strange decisions and it gets boring and unwatchable eventually. The story is actually pretty good, wish the studio hired someone competant to make it.
Won't be watching season 2 even if it comes.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Edge of tomorrow on crack
A cliche plot, boring story, cringeworthy dialogues, welcome to world of modern entertainment. Someone said 'Hey lets copy edge of tomorrow, give it plot of time travel, a handsome hero and people will mop it up'.
So much money spent on nonsense. Edge of tomorrow wasn't the best movie of all time but atleast it had a coherent plot and some degree of originality. Here you have time travel with nothing actually explained mashed together with lot of plot holes and don't ask any questions because you won't find any convincing answers.
On top of that reviewers here are asking people not to think too much about it... Why do they even bother watching movies then....
Dota: Dragon's Blood (2021)
Anime with the best story
As someone who loves animation I must say this one of the best animated shows out there. The best thing about the show is the story. As someone who never played Dota, I was engrossed by the story. It is also very well paced and never gets boring. The character development is really good.
Overall I hope to see more from this show.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Pedro Pascal couldn't save this
There are movies where things just happen and if you try to make sense of it, you won't like it. Like most Batman movies in 90s, this is one them.
The action scenes unlike other DC movies was laughable. Pacing was altogether slow, plot cliche. 2nd half was just boring. In the end I was rooting for anticlimax because of how bored I was.
I didn't like the original wonder women either but thought I would give this a try but the way things are I think I am probably better off not watching future DC movies altogether as they are just not fun anymore unless it's Nolan directing them.
Tenet (2020)
A recursive cross between primer and memento
Kudos to Nolan for even attempting something like this. There is no movie quite like this. You can consider it a cross between primer and memento but this movie largely does it's own thing.
The negative aspect of the movie is the pacing. Unlike other Nolan movies this one will feel very fast. There is barely an explanation of anything and things start happening fast. This can be disorienting and difficult to understand on first watch.
This is actually intended that way because this movie gets better and better on further viewings. The whole thing will ultimately feel like a recursion.
The dialogs are short and witty unlike previous Nolan movies. The acting of protagonist and Niel is brilliant. Action is amazing as always as is the attention to detail.
In a world with the mindless superhero movies doing so well, Nolan's movies stands apart. I doubt if anyone will ever try something like this once he is not there anymore.
ZeroZeroZero (2019)
Narcos meets breaking bad
I am surprised I never heard of this show until I watched it. This is 3 parallel stories happening in different countries around one drug trafficking. Each episode is intense from start to finish. From the crime syndicates in Italy to the narcos in Mexico to the drug middlemen caught in the cross fire.
There is rarely a boring moment in it all. The acting is stunning all around.
Mulan (2020)
Another cliche Disney product
Uninteresting story, cringe dialogue, cliche overall. Welcome to the world of modern Disney where plot just has to some way, no originality, just pump a lot of money on action and cgi. Donne yen and Jet Li were completely wasted.
The War of the Worlds (2019)
3 episodes felt like 30
How the hell do you turn something as interesting as this so boring in just 3 episodes. I was intrigued in the beginning with the setting but eventually is gets slow and boring rather fast. Watched the last episode at 2x speed...
Normal People (2020)
Reviews here ruined me
The good:
- fantastic chemistry between the leading characters
- good engaging cinematography
- no time waste, no 26 episodes 40 minutes each. Each episode is straight to the point.
- attention to detail pretty good, both Sligo and Dublin felt relatable
The verdict: The first half of this show was pretty good but becomes cliche after that. I honestly expected more after going through the reviews here. The show is aptly named normal people because it's largely a believable story. But it doesn't offer anything unique or different to be brilliant. Its still an enjoyable watch though.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Worst star war movie yet
If you are fine with 2.5 hours of things happening for the sake of happening then you would probably like this movie. Despite being 2.5 hours long, there is little plot or character development.
There are so many moments where my reaction was "really, just like that?". Older movies still had a plot that you could follow and had a sense of originality. You knew where the movies were going. Here things happened because they needed to happen for the plot to go in a certain direction.
I gave up trying to understand the last part of the movie. I empathize with star war fans who feel this is just made because they want money by recycling the same cliches.
Eli (2019)
Could have been better
This movie is better than what the trailers want to make you think. It could have been better executed though. The ending makes up for the horrible dragging first half of the movie that felt somewhat cliche. The ending comes out of nowhere and makes you feel somewhat conflicted about how you should feel about the protagonist.
Still worth a watch imo.
In the Tall Grass (2019)
Something new
I can understand why some people can get creeped out by this movie and give it a bad rating but this movie doesn't deserve that.
The trailer for this movie didn't give too much away. This movie has great story and good acting. This is also not a movie where everything is meant to be understood or explained which is why some people believe there are plot holes in this movie.
This is perfect for people who are tired of cliched content and want to try something different for which sometimes Netflix is just perfect like in this case.
Joker (2019)
Halfway there
If you are coming here expecting to see prequel to the joker immortalised by Heath ledger this movie is half way there. This movie is not remotely as entertaining as Dark knight, instead it's a character study of joker.
This movie tries to answer why joker is the way he is. And it accomplishes it to a certain extent. What it doesn't manage to do that well is for the audience to empathize with the protagonist. Joker in the dark knight is possibly the most likeable super villain, the way he managed to captivate the audience. This movie doesn't do a great job of that. After watching you would be left wondering whether you should be on the side of the joker.
Instead this movie has a taxi driver feel to it.
The Lion King (2019)
Expect nothing new even if you haven't seen original
There is nothing new about this movie even if you haven't seen the original one. Everything is cliche and boringly predictable. It's one of those movies whose trailer looks quite good but the actual movie is a dud. Still a decent movie for kids but not for others.
Lucia (2013)
Good story, not well directed
This movie starts strongly. But like most Indian Movies drags it a bit long. It had all the ingredients to make it good.
But watching the movie makes you feel it could have been done so much better than it was.
Like there are sequence of unnecessary songs. Like most Indian movies they are not required.
Great story line but not so great direction doesn't quit make it a movie to watch out for. Still something new for an Indian movie.
Also the climax of the movie makes you think a lot about it. All in all a great try but not quite there yet if you are expecting a Chritopher Nolan type movie.
