It has no Right Being this Good
11 March 2019
"Fighting with My Family" has no right being as good as it is. By the trailers it looked like a direct to video WWE produced vehicle that they wanted to get quick buck with The Rock bankability. However, it's a movie with a lot of charm, humor, and most importantly heart. The film itself is very British in terms of it's jokes, but that adds to the likability of the characters and the timing and nature of the jokes. The film feels like an indie movie and that's a good thing because it adds to the grit of becoming a professional wrestler and Paige as a person and character. And this film quite honestly isn't just for wrestling fans, it's for anyone that likes movies about the underdog and a family that is bounded by a similar passion. Yes, it does have insider terms and jokes, but the film does a great job of explaining it for the general audience, while also showing them why people are such huge fans of wrestling and the amount of hard work and dedication that goes into the sport. It is a great movie that anyone can enjoy and have a great time with, but there are a few things that will make wrestling fans enjoy it just a little bit more. Go check it out, if you haven't, I give it 4.5/5

A Solid Addition to the MCU
11 March 2019
"Captain Marvel" is another solid addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe series of movies. While I don't think it's a top tier film like "The Avengers," "Black Panther," or "Captain America: Civil War" or even a second tier set of films like "Doctor Strange," the Thor series, or "Ant-Man," it is really entertaining and fun with a lot of world building.

The film tells a really good story of empowerment, self discovery, and not taking things on face value because there is always more than meets the eyes. The script is filled with great character moments, especially developing Nick Fury and making Captain Marvel a total bad-A. There's a lot of funny lines and snarky remarks that are true to the Marvel formula. My main issue is with how the film handles its plots, they pack a lot in to making the film fit within the MCU that it tends to rush through a lot of interesting storylines that the film sets up. And we get some hollow victories. The stakes also don't feel completely all there because we know the outcome of most of the characters. On the flip side, we do get a lot of great character moments.

Speaking of the characters, this movie has a tone of great ones. Sam Jackson as Nick Fury is great as ever and we get more softer moments with him. He's always been a harden soldier and it's great seeing him early in his career, when he was a bit more naive. Brie Larson as Captain Marvel is a true standout and a great addition to the plethora of great Marvel Characters. She has some of the best parts of every characters that make up the MCU. She has Iron Man's snark, Cap's leadership, Thor's confidence, Hulk's Strength, and Widow's resourcefulness. So she is a great culmination of the heroes we love, while being her own. Ben Mendelsohn and Jude Law are both great as powerful threats and allies.

Again, "Captain Marvel" isn't a groundbreaking film in the MCU, but it is a film with a lot of entertainment, fun, and world building. It has characters that are great additions to the MCU and the film does a great job of building up towards "Avengers: Endgame." It is worth the watch, I give it 3.5/5

A Bittersweet, but Satisfying End to an Amazing Series
23 February 2019
The first two "How to Train Your Dragon" films have been one of the greatest sets of films of the last decade and the third one does not disappoint in capping off this amazing series of epic films. Yes, to put it bluntly, "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" is amazing.

The first thing you'll notice is the leap in animation. The first couple movies are pillars in terms of visuals in the animation world and this one only enhances and improves on that. The backgrounds are vivid and well detailed, the character animations are fluid and weighted, the details in the character's design are precise and meticulous, and the fire, water, hair, scale, and other visual effects are breathtaking. Yes this film is a visual treat from start to finish. The cinematography like in the other films are just breathtaking. The flying sequences are absorbing that you get lost in the visually detailed world. The camera work along with the stunning visuals create a living breathing world that you almost forget doesn't exist.

The characters are great. The dynamic between Toothless and Hiccup is still the heart of the film. It's amazing to see the amount of growth these two have had since their previous adventures. One thing that I particularly love about this series is the character progression from film to film, they don't stop growing and evolving. The side characters are great and I like how they are tested on how well they work together under Hiccups leadership.

Music has always been in the forefront of this series and it does not disappoint here either. John Powell's classic scores still bring that same sense of wonder and mystique, while the new ones enhance the world and character themes, It makes you feel every emotion that the filmmakers want at every venture of the film from beginning to end, whether it's humor, fear, or tears.

Dean DeBlois has crafted an amazing world with so much heart and wonder. He's made a modern epic series of films that rival the greatest Hollywood fantasies and epics, such as The Lord of the Rings or "Gladiator." He knows exactly, when to throw in humor or make you cry. The final 15 mins of the film are some of the best moments in any film, period. It's filled with moments of real danger, visceral action, and tears that would make even the hardest of souls cry.

I've praised "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" and made it sound like it's even better than the second film. However, it does fall short, but only by a little. This film is more humor heavy, but that doesn't take away from the real emotional moments in it. However, the stakes do feel less here and the villain, while solid for the film, wasn't necessarily needed. He added a nice dimension, but the film could have sufficed and excelled on the drama between Hiccup and Toothless and them learning to grow and be individual characters. These are minor complaints in an otherwise great film.

This is how you end a trilogy. The Dragon series is one of not just modern animation's, but modern film's greatest series. And The Hidden World concludes this franchise in a bittersweet, but satisfying end. I give it 4.5/5

Visual Treat
20 February 2019
"Alita: Battle Angel" is a fun and entertaining time. It has a lot of incredible visual effect and amazing fight sequences. The characters are fun and charming, especially Alita and Dr. Ido. I think the cast adds a lot of life to the character that otherwise could have been dull. I think it does falter on the narrative side of things. The story itself is too simple and very predictable. I could see every plot point and character motive coming from a mile away. It's a basic dystopian society with a tyrannical leader that can only be overthrown by "the chosen one" story. However, I feel like there is more to the it than just that, but the film doesn't spend enough time developing the story beyond what we get. On the brightside, James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez have crafted an incredible world that's filled with so much life and imagination. The world building is very real and it made me want to see more and more of the geography that was crafted for this film. I'm sure in a sequel, (fingers crossed) they can expand on it even further. Even though the story is weak, I feel like the world building and the characters are worth your time. This is definitely a event film that should be experienced for it breathtaking visuals and action. I give it 3.5/5

Not as Good as the First, but Still Fun
20 February 2019
The first "The Lego Movie" was a wonderful delight and a really great movie. Then "The Lego Batman Movie" came out and was also pretty darn good. And now we have "The Lego Movie 2" and to be frank, it's also a good movie. It has great animation, some very creative moments, laugh out loud jokes, and even heart. The film even expands the world for better or worse. However, I don't think it reaches the heights of the first movie or even the spin-off. The jokes, while funny, are sort of one note, the story has too much going on to where we could have a had a second film that focused on one of the topics it tried to handle. Not to say it's hard to follow or anything, but the right amount of thought and time doesn't go into developing the movie into something better than we got. At the end of the day, it's a fun ride and you'll have a good time watching it, like I did. Just when I started thinking about the film more and more I started questioning its universe and the rules it set up, some of it doesn't make sense or is inconsistent. Still a good movie though 3.5/5

Glass (2019)

A Satisfying Conclusion to a franchise 20 years in the making
30 January 2019
"Glass," directed by M. Night Shyamalan is a film almost 20 years in the making. Ever since watching "Unbreakable," I wanted a sequel and expansion to the universe that was set up, but sadly it did not come to fruition. Then, seamlessly out of nowhere, "Split" comes out nearly 17 years later and ignites my hopes again and then this movie was announced months later. So, does it live up to the anticipation?

In short, yes. Yes it does live up to the near 20 year wait and it is one heck of a movie. What "Glass" does so well is expand the universe and brings this amazing set of cult classics to a satisfying and unexpected conclusion. It's a film that finds a sweet spot between the brooding and meticulous pace of "Unbreakable" and the more swift and haunting progression of "Split," while also having its own level of energy and intrigue.

Shyamalan put a lot of love and care into this film. It's one of his most sympathetic films and I commend him for the direction he takes it. He's so sure of what he wants and he delivers just what he promises. His use of music and camera framing delivers on the emotions that he wants you to feel. It portrays the action and mystery and keeps you invested the whole time. It's layered with a good amount of humor and heart. There are some silly moments and some parts that aren't explained very well, but in the grand scheme of things, they're almost inconsequential. They don't take away from the finale, but make you scratch your head a little.

The best part of the film, aside from the music and action, are the the actors. Bruce Willis actually gives a hoot and it's great seeing how far his character has come since the first film. Mr. Glass, a.k.a Samuel L. Jackson, brings the same level of menace and pretentiousness that he had before albeit there are a couple questionable moments and revelations with him. Sarah Paulson is great and brings a dynamic that felt natural and a welcome inclusion. She plays off of the other 3 characters incredibly well. Anya Taylor-Joy and the rest of the supporting cast from "Unbreakable" are in here and are really great and integral to the plot, even though they're not in it as much as I would like. However, the star and the real spectacle of the film is James McAvoy as "The Horde" or Kevin Wendell Crumb. He's fantastic and changes between 24 personas with such easy, it's almost unreal. He deserves all the recognition he can get. It's just a stunning performance that I think not even the best in the business could pull off.

"Glass" is a great movie. However, it is a movie that I can see not resonating with a lot of people. The ending is a bit daunting, but if you go with the flow, you'll have a blast. Also, if you're unfamiliar with "Unbreakable" and "Split" it can be hard to get into, so I highly recommend watching those two other great movies. It is definitely a movie for the fans of his franchise. There are so many throwbacks and references that actually had me giddy with excitement.

Overall, "Glass" is a great movie that honors comic books and superheroes, but also promotes compassion, sympathy and respect. It is a satisfying conclusion to a near 2 decade films series in the making that delivers on everything promised. It's filled with action, humor, mystery, and heart. I give it 4.5/5

One of the Worst Movies of the Year
5 October 2017
Unlike most people, I actually found the first Fifty Shades movie, "Fifty Shades of Grey," enjoyable in a "it's so bad that it's good" kinda way and honestly I was hoping for more of the same. Unfortunately, what we actually get is a long overly melodramatic mess. The biggest offense of the film is the writing. It feels as if the book was used in place of a script. So almost every mundane and useless moment is kept in. And us as the audience suffer because we have to sit through a longer run time with not much happening. Also for a movie that marketed itself on being sexy and taboo, it's quite mild. The most intense they get is a couple of spank scenes that ultimately end in missionary and a cut away to them naked in bed. Because of the terrible writing in the film, the actors don't have much to work with and as a result they give embarrassingly bad performances. Their line delivery feels unnatural and awkward because literally no one talks like that in real life and I feel like the actors realized it, but went along for a fat paycheck. The soundtrack and style isn't bad, but with so much nonsense going on around, they do nothing to make the experience enjoyable, instead I was thinking about which songs I can add to my playlist. In short, "Fifty Shades Darker" is a long drawn out melodramatic soap opera that managed to become a feature length film that takes itself too seriously. It has nothing of substance and you can actually find sexier things on television. I give it 2/5

Death Note (I) (2017)
5/10
It's not that Bad
5 October 2017
The first thing we have to realize is that Netflix's "Death Note" isn't the original show. It isn't a retelling of the events of the anime with real people. In fact, it's more of a re-imaging, which makes this film its own story with characters only simply sharing some names. And honestly, being its own thing goes in the films favor as now we don't have to constantly compare it to the original. However, that doesn't make it a good movie.

Netflix's "Death Note" isn't a bad movie, but it isn't necessarily a good movie either. It's somewhere in the middle, but it is watchable and can be enjoyable at some points. The biggest issue of the film is time, this is a movie that could have benefited from an extra 30-40 mins to the run time to flesh out the story and characters. Many scenes and events feel very rushed and the editing can be a bit choppy so the eventual build up to the finale feels a bit underwhelming and if you're not familiar with the basic lore of the Death Note itself, it can be hard to wrap your head around some of its powers and rules.

The characters are fine, but like I said, more time could have helped flesh them out and clear up some of their motives. Light Turner played by Nat Wolff is a decent protagonist and much more different than his anime counterpart. He's still a genius, but he's more timid and not the most popular person at his school. He doesn't have an ego or god complex, but he has more of a moral dilemma of whether to use the Death Note or not. There's a good foundation here that could have been explored more. L played by Lakeith Stanfield again is a decent character and plays well against Light. He's still quirky and confident, but he has his own moral dilemmas that make him more relatable. But again, his relationship with light and his own character arc suffers because of the lack of development. Ryuk voiced by Willem Dafoe is the strongest character. He doesn't do to much but Defoe voices him perfectly giving him a demonic and ominous presence and I really like the decision of the filmmakers to keep him in the shadows and more of an observer than an active participant to the story. All the other characters are good characters on paper, but because of the short run time they don't get the attention and development they need to be compelling, but I'll say a couple decisions did surprise me.

The dark direction and tone are great and suit a movie that's about a notebook that can kill anyone at any given time. There are some great scenes that really add tension and build on Light and L's relationship, such as the cafe scene from the trailers. The last act is actually extremely well done and really the saving grace of the film as it highlights everything the movie is trying to say and achieve. It's something straight from the anime with clever directing, writing, and editing. Like stated before, the impact could have been stronger and more compelling, if it gave us a bit more time to explore the world.

Overall, "Death Note" isn't a good movie, but it's definitely not a bad movie. There's a lot of potential, but because of the decision to keep the movie short, it can come off as a bit choppy and underdeveloped. However, the movie goes by at a brisk pace and I wasn't ever bored. Sure there are moments that are cringeworthy, but there is just enough to keep viewers invested and interested to at least make it to the conclusion, which is well worth it. I give it a middle of the road review, a high 2.5/5

Split (IX) (2016)

Shyamalan is Back!!!
5 October 2017
M. Night Shyamalan is back, baby!!! Yes, you read that right. "Split" is a return to form for Shyamalan, this is another brilliant thriller from him that harks back to early days as a filmmaker. It's suspenseful, it's eerie, and it's a blast to watch.

This film has some of Shyamalan's strongest writing and focus. The characters, dialogue, and exposition all serve a purpose for the plot. His camera work is tight and meticulously constructed to keep the audience guessing as to what is going to happen. And the music adds to the suspense and gets you absorbed into the movie.

The actors do a wonderful job and really let you sense their fears, discomfort, and pain. However, the real highlight of the film is James McAvoy, who gives an award caliber performance. Not only does he juggles several distinct personalities with their own mannerisms, way of speech, and facial expressions, but he transitions between them at the flip of a coin so effortlessly. It's quite amusing and terrifyingly disturbing.

Overall "Split" is a wonderful movie that has a lot of great moments of suspense and wonderful performances, especially by the brilliant McAvoy. It's a film that's filled with deeper meanings of abuse and pain, while also being a welcome comeback for M. Night Shyamalan. The ending of the film is such a pleasant surprise that I'm giving this movie an extra half point. I give it 4.5/5

The Big Sick (2017)
9/10
One of the years best movies
16 September 2017
"The Big Sick" at its core is a conventional romantic dramedy that has a relatively predictable story, but with a brilliant screenplay and refreshing execution, it excels and becomes something truly special. The characters and story are endearing because you can sense the thought and care that went into telling this really personal story. While having so much heart, the film is also incredibly funny and relatable.

The screenplay is filled with humor that tackles subjects of interracial relationships, cultural differences, forgiveness, family, and love. Nothing feels heavy handed or forced to get a point across. Instead the movie prefers to observational and poke fun at the everyday things even being near death. I like how the movie is consistently funny and manages to still be heartfelt and sincere. And the screenplay really does balance everything. It's insightful and has a positive message about time healing all wounds and family will stick together, even if they don't see eye to all the time.

The cast is spot on and everyone gives a relatively enjoyable and poignant performance. Kumail Nanjiani, as the lead, actually gives a performance that's comedically well timed and with dramatic depth. He really holds the screen and we care for his struggle. Zoe Kazan, as Emily and the love interest, is engaging and has a bubbly personality that's enjoyable to watch. Kumail and Emily's relationship is commendable as it feels natural and well developed. I honestly cared for their relationship and their on screen chemistry felt very real. Holly Hunter, Emily's mom, is a true acting force. She really cares about her daughter without being overbearing, but instead incredibly understanding. Ray Romano, as Emily's dad, also has some awesome scenes. He gets some of the biggest laughs, but his character is much more than a conventional comic relief. He has backstory and scene stealing moments that are equally emotional and hilarious. Honestly, I like how real and likable all these characters are and they don't come off as jerks for the sake of having more conflict in the movie.

Overall, "The Big Sick" is a romantic dramedy that isn't the most original thing out there, but it's funny, fresh, clever and heartfelt without being sappy and cliché in its execution. Brilliant screenplay about family, forgiveness, and love that has impeccable comedic timing. The cast is great as well. They deliver a balanced performance that's both hilarious and heartfelt. One of the best movies of the year 4.5/5

Wonder Woman (2017)
8/10
"Wonder Woman" Review
13 August 2017
I finally managed to watch the highly praised "Wonder Woman" and I have to agree, a lot of the hype is justified. It's honestly the best D.C. Cinematic Universe movie, but then again, the other movies were pretty bad or disappointing. However, that doesn't take anything away from this movie, which is actually not only slightly better, but blows them out of the water in terms of quality.

The strength of "Wonder Woman" is Patty Jenkins' direction. She really knows how to make this world work and has a great sense of the character. She directs fight scenes that are not only visually stunning, but progress the story in a way that hasn't been done before in the DCCU. Setting the film during The Great War allows her to play around with gender norms and defy expectations, which plays into the humor and adds another level of appreciation of how far we've come. However, as great as she is, I think the movie could have been cut down as it does go on a bit too long. Plus the reveal of the villain at the end is kind of underwhelming and underdeveloped. But that doesn't take away from the fact that she made a movie that has edge of your seat action, well thought out main characters, and is a fun ride for the most part.

Wonder Woman played by Gal Gadot is great casting as she really does look the part. She looks so awesome in her costume and comes off as a very capable and strong individual that can beat anyone. I do feel that her line delivery though is hit or miss as they border on well acted to cringey. Chris Pine is perfect as a supporting character as he's charming and charismatic. And he's very capable even though he's fighting alongside Wonder Woman, who really doesn't need his help. The two characters paired have a good dynamic and Pine manages to hide some of Gadot's weaknesses, when they're on screen together. The rest of the cast is fine, but forgettable. They serve their purpose and move the plot forward.

Overall, "Wonder Woman" is a fun ride and the best DCCU movie we've gotten yet. It's really well directed, the actors and character are enjoyable, the action and visuals are stellar, and the score is fantastic. Yes there are problems here and there, but they don't take away from a competently made film. It gives me hope that D.C. is heading in the right direction and can make more good movies in the future that can finally give the fans what they deserve from these characters. I give it 4/5

Laika's Masterpiece
19 August 2016
"Kubo and the Two Strings" is a hard movie to explain. There is a story in it and the adventure is grand and fun, but I can't place it into a category of traditional storytelling. The themes of the film are the values of memories and how we truly can never forget people that we lose throughout our lifetime. Very mature themes that are handled with such finesse and creativity that I can't say I have seen anything like it before. Even when you as the audience know where the story is headed, the film surprises you with the delivery and you actually grow and learn with the characters.

The strength of the film is the pure visceral experience it provides. The visuals and sound had a layer of depth and drama that you feel in your inner core. It is more of an experience than it is a movie that you watch. Throughout the film, I felt moments of sadness, loss, happiness, horror, fear, and accomplishment. It is a movie that truly raises the bar for animation and it saddens me that many people will not check it out as it is very different from traditional animated films that we are used to seeing from other major animation studios.

So much care and attention went into this film. The world Laika has created is rich with so much history, story, mythos, and culture that even some movies and series that are much longer can't fully create. I felt that the world is living and that magic is truly alive. I love how the character make it feel special that magic exists, but aren't put of by it, when they see it for themselves and have to question the logic.

The characters are fun and lovable, but also brave and dimensional. Not one character felt out of place and they're inclusion felt important. The voice casting is top-notch and I felt like the celebrities actually made an effort. Unlike many big-budget animated productions, The voice actors weren't distracting and added their own layer of charisma that enhanced and drew attention to the characters. Monkey is probably the best character and I feel like she'll be the fan favorite as she's funny, powerful, and a total bada**.

Overall, Laika has produced probably their best animated film to date and that is saying a lot from a studio that produces quality efforts time and time again. "Kubo and the Two Strings" is unlike anything out there and deserves to be seen on the big screen. The animation alone is breathtakingly gorgeous. The beautiful score and music only adds to the complexity of the film. It is probably the best film of 2016 so far and I find it hard to beat. I highly recommend that people check out this highly creative experience.

Snowpiercer (2013)
10/10
An exciting and thrilling train ride
13 November 2014
Just saw "Snowpiercer" today and I gotta say, it's a brilliant movie. The cast is wonderful. Chris Evans gives one of his best performances and Tilda Swinton is unrecognizable, but oh so good in the film, probably the highlight in terms of performances (Oscar nom anyone). The direction is superb and filled with so many amazing shots, visual effects and choreographed action it's like watching poetry in motion. I like the social class story, it's relevant and quite possible. The ending is the only missteps in the film, but overall, I loved it. I can't say how great this film is and quite possibly one of my favorites of the year. A strong 4.5/5

A MASTERPIECE for animation and films in general
16 June 2014
For starters, "How to Train Your Dragon 2" has a very mature and rich story that is filled with emotional and dramatic depth. It grows our characters from the first film and really feels like a continuation of the series and not just some cash grab. We see how Berk has changed and how the lives of everyone on the island has become better, I really love how the film tackles darker subject matter like remorse, forgiveness, and redemption, while at the same time touching on themes of love and loss. The screenplay is filled with moments of pure heart and we really see the bond between Hiccup and Toothless expanded upon. Not only is this a great screenplay, but also Dreamworks' best since the original "Shrek."

The characters and voice actors are perfect. I love how the characters have grown and their personalities have been enhanced. Hiccup takes a more proactive role in this film and we really see that he's matured a lot from the first film. His and Toothless' relationship is expanded on and it really is still the core emotional center of the film. The side characters like Astrid and Snotlout get more screen time this time around and they actually do more with the film. They aid with the comic relief to keep the movie a little lighter than the extremely dark tone that it's going for. There are a few new characters introduced into the universe like Valka, Eret, and Drago Bludvist. Valka is a great character and she's another great female addition to the roster. She has a great emotional ark and not only that, she is a strong character and a better dragon master than Hiccup that really holds her own. Eret is a nice addition to the cast as he is also comic relief, but also a interest side villain character. Drago is a fantastic villain and is really a cold hearted murderer. His method of mastering dragons really differs from Hiccups and its a great contrast that shows the different types of people that are in this world. I love how they build him up before actually revealing him.

The animation and visuals are probably amongst the best I've seen from any CGI film to date. It is just breathtakingly gorgeous. The character's movements are so fluid and each character has their own way of moving. What I found really impressive is the facial animation. There are so many intimate moments in this film that require no dialogue and we can sense exactly what the characters are thinking from their expressions. There is always something happening in the foreground as well as the background and it's unlike anything that I've seen before in the medium. Characters could be taking in front of the camera, but in the background there could be an epic battle taking place. There is a lot to take in, but the director, Dean DeBlois, knows how to balance the visuals with well paced story. The layout and environment are also quite impressive. Every blade of grass, powder of snow, and water particles are just amazing to look at.

The score from John Powell impresses again and really enhances the already great score of the series. It's bombastic, epic, touching, and moving. There is something about the score that really makes the film so much better than it already is. I was literally left in tears because of the score and how beautiful it is.

I'm gonna come out and say it. "How to Train Your Dragon 2" is a MASTERPIECE amongst modern films and a revolution in animation. It is a film that is going to push animation further and allow the medium to be taken more seriously. For a major studio production, it goes to places that the medium has only thought of, but couldn't really pull it off because of limitations set by studios and audiences alike. It is almost a near perfect film and I award it the highest 5/5 that I can.

An emotional ride that celebrates life
10 June 2014
"The Fault In Our Stars" is an incredible ride of emotion from start to finish. It's a touching love story that really pulls on the heartstrings and manages to make prolific statements on life and what we as humans should do with such an amazing gift. That we are not bound by the life we are given and we can do whatever we want so as long as we don't let our circumstances bind us.

I am really impressed by this films script and how thought provoking and heartfelt it is. The relationship and the genuine emotions are so well written that not for a second I don't believe what they are saying or feeling towards one another. I also enjoy how it doesn't take a strong sentimental or sappy approach on the subject matter, as these characters are really sick and it could have come off as trying way too hard or manipulative. The script instead focuses on celebrating life as apposed to the darker side of death.

The director, Josh Boone, does a good job with handling everything that is going on and directs the cast well, as they are the strongest parts of the film. I really enjoy some of the stylistic approaches in the film, such as how they show the text messages. One small fault in his directing is that the film gets a bit conventional near the end and it manages to lose some of its magic. The soundtrack is well used and really drives the movie home. It's filled with upbeat and fun songs that really makes the film feel like a celebration of life.

The cast is top class and they truly give some wonderful performances. Shailene Woodley gives a magical performance that conveys genuine happiness and heartbreaking sadness. She easily portrays so many emotions realistically and convincingly. Ansel Elgort plays Woodley's love interest and if not done by such a good actor, he could have come off as annoying and in your face. His character is a bit loud and egotistic, but he is a nice guy and really loves everyone, who he encounters. Woodley's and Elgort's on screen chemistry is incredibly good. I really bought their relationship and felt every pain that they felt. The actors are a true highlight of the film.

Overall, "The Fault In Our Stars" is a really good movie that is a fresh of breath air in this summer blockbuster season filled with high octane action and ridiculous special effect. It's a emotional ride that does not force it's message or manipulates its audience. It is a genuine movie that shows a brighter side of life and death. While the film does get conventional in it's third act, it still ends on a high note. I give it an incredibly high 4/5

The best X-Men yet...
1 June 2014
From the very beginning, "X-Men: Days of Future Past" had me hooked. It tells an endearing story of the struggles of survival for these mutants as they are picked off one by one by the monstrous and vicious Sentinels. The X-Men have to work together with their past selves, in order to secure their future. It is a fun and highly well told story that pays of not only in the action, but also emotionally.

Bryan Singer is at his best as he directs a large cast of mutants through an emotionally endearing story that will leave viewers in awe of what is happening and what is to come for the franchise. I really appreciated a lot of the stylized directing, it really made the film that much more fun. The visuals are used impressively and the action sequences are directed incredibly well. I was literally at the edge of my seat every time the characters were in combat as I literally felt that they might lose their lives. The script is packed with great character moments and we get to learn a lot more about our favorite mutants. The time traveling is handled incredibly well and as long as you don't try to break it down, it is satisfyingly well handled.

The cast is great and they really own their characters. Fassbender and McAvoy are great replacements as Magneto and Professor Xavier, respectively. They provide great emotional performances as well give us some great character moments. Jennifer Lawrence has come a long way from her first performance as the blue shape shifting femme fetal, Mystique. She finally fits the role perfectly as she is sleek, sexy, and highly unpredictable. And as always, Hugh Jackman is just spot on as Wolverine.

Overall, "X-Men: Days of Future Past" is a the quintessential summer blockbuster this year. It has everything from amazing action, thought provoking and emotionally satisfying story that delivers on all cylinders, and a great cast of talented actors. This not only is the best movie of the year so far, it is also the best X-Men movie yet and personally it's in my top 3 favorite comic book movies of all time list. I give it a incredibly high 4.5/5.

Neighbors (I) (2014)
8/10
Hilarious and thoughtful
17 May 2014
"Neighbors" is a funny, entertaining and surprisingly thoughtful film. It's about old vs. new generations going at it, but at its core, it's a film that's about learning when to grow up and take responsibility. The script is infused with hilarious jokes, ridiculous pranks and situations, and intelligent pop-culture references that bridge generations. The story itself is quite enjoyable, even though at times the movie can feel a bit unfocused.

The characters are colorful and likable and the actors give some great comedic performances. Seth Rogan is hilarious and provides most of the laughs. His shameless attitude really allows for some awesome and gut wrenchingly funny moments. Zac Effron proves yet again that he is a born star, who will be one of the biggest stars in the near future. His comedic timing is impeccable and he is just so great to watch. Dave Franco is also no short of awesome as well as the rest of the cast.

Overall, "Neighbors" is a really hilarious film that is not short on laughs and also some valuable life lessons. Probably the best comedy of the year and really worth checking out. I give it 4/5

Rio 2 (2014)
7/10
Better than the first film
30 April 2014
I'm not a huge fan of the first "Rio," as I think it is a very straight forward movie with little to offer. It's fun and all, but lacking in emotional punches.

"Rio 2" on the other hand is a far stronger movie than the original. It's cast is superior and well balanced, the story has a few nicely done emotional sequences, and the animation is gorgeous. While I find the songs weaker than the highs of the first film, they are more consistent in terms of quality. The real highlight of the film is its script, which I think is Blue Sky's first or second best script to date. It is well balanced with a fish out of water story, a well handled environmental message that isn't being shoved down our throats, and well rounded humor.

Overall, it's a fun experience with gorgeous animation. The first third of the film is a bit conventional and rather boring, but the second they get into the Amazon, the film really takes flight and gets better as it progresses. 3.5/5

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" Review
5 April 2014
"Captain America:The Winter Soldier" is a really good movie that is leagues better than the initial first film, which I was not a fan of. This new story of The Cap is brought into the modern world and it's fun seeing him deal with how much the world has changed, but at the same time how much it has stayed the same. The script is well written. It is filled with great relevant social commentary about our government and major organizations and how they preserve freedom by reistricting it. However, while the script is fairly heavy, it does manage to have enough fun Marvel humor that we've all come to love.

One thing in particular that I love about this movie is that it gives a lot of respect to its characters. The Captain himself is show to be more than just a leader. He can hold his own, but is also a great human being. Chris Evans has finally owned the character and it's hard seeing anyone else play him. We also get more backstory to Natasha a.k.a Black Widow. It allows the audience to connect with her on an emotional level. Same goes for Nick Fury. The Winter Soldier is a pretty awesome villain, who I believe to be the best villain from the Marvel Cinematic universe only behind Loki.

Overall, "Captain America:The Winter Soldier" is a fairly entertaining and surprisingly thought provoking movie that is stepping up the quality of the modern superhero movie genre. It has everything from great characters, to an engaging and honest story, to some of the best action we'll get this year. My only gripe with the film would be the heavy use of shaky cam during the action sequences. Other than that, it is a a movie that you go and see in theaters today. Also, stay after the credits there is a big reveal that will surely get everyone excited for The Avengers 2. I give 4/5

Everything in fact is awesome
8 February 2014
"The Lego Movie" is one of the most frantic movies I have ever seen, but also one of the most creative and funny. It is filled with charm, intelligent humor, and more importantly heart.

The writing is incredibly strong. There are a lot if play on words and unpredictable moments that really surprise the viewers. I love the themes about conformity and being special. It's quit unique as it says that anyone can be special regardless of their creativity or need to be different.

The characters Vitruvious, Lucy, Batman, and Lord Business are all great. Their voice actors do a great job and they deliver their jokes perfectly. Emmet is the main character and probably the best because he is so relatable and a very atypical hero. There isn't anything really special about him, but he's a great every man and Chris Pratt brings the right amount of humanity and charm to the role.

The animation is beautiful and incredibly creative. There are a lot of great sight gags and visual effects. I really like the stop motion look the movie achieves even though the first few minutes are jarring.

Overall, "Everything is Awesome" and this a beautifully crafted and intelligently written film that packs the right amount of humor and heart. The animation is great and incredibly creative. I really like this film and I highly recommend it. I give is 4.5/5

Celebration of Life
30 December 2013
"The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" is a celebration of life. It's a feel good movie that not only inspires, but motivates its viewers to go out and live life to the fullest. Don't let anyone, especially yourself, stop you from seeking adventure and making the best of this precious gift of being alive. It is a fun and heartwarming tale that is worth watching.

The story and screenplay don't necessarily excel or surprise in the narrative department, but they provide a emotionally satisfying experience nonetheless. However, this film really shines from a directorial stand point. Ben Stiller does an excellent job of balancing the fantasy and real world moments in the film. I really felt like I was watching a person's daydreams when Walter would zone out. It's exciting and beautifully executed and when the character snaps back into reality, it is very much like me when I daydream.

The cast does a solid job, but nothing really stands out performance wise. Having said that, I find Walter to be an incredibly likable character. He's odd and a bit awkward, but he never feels hopeless so we can always root for him when things don't go as planned. And Ben Stiller's natural charisma adds to the character's likability.

Overall "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" is an enjoyable feel good movie that will warm your heart and make you appreciate life. The film doesn't excel in any one particular area of film making, but it does hit you were it counts. Accompanied by a great soundtrack/score, this is a movie that is worth watching and you'll come out of it with a new found appreciation for life. I give it 4/5

The funniest movie of 2013
25 December 2013
"The Wolf of Wall Street" is infectiously entertaining. It is probably the funniest movie I have seen all year with witty dialogue, over the top characters, and filled with energy that bleeds off the screen. Between all the fun however,  there is also a story about addiction and how it can cause a downward spiral in your life whether it be drugs, money, or power.

Acclaimed director Martin Scorsese does a wonderful job keeping this movie at a high at all times. Never once does this movie lose it's energy or sense of humor much like the drug induced characters. There are a lot of quick cuts and edits to keep the movie feeling as If you are on drugs as well as playing high energy music in some of the more serious situations.

The cast brings their "A" game. The stand out is obviously Leonardo DiCaprio, who pretty much owns and excels any scene he is in. This film really showcases his diverse range.

Overall "The Wolf of Wall Street" is a full on adrenaline ride that never loses momentum. It's directed with a lot of flair and energy and has an incredibly well written script that gives it depth and a ton of laughs. The cast is fantastic and DiCaprio gives his best and most fun filled performance to date. I really enjoyed this movie and think it's the funniest movie of the year 4.5/5

Jennifer Lawrence steals the show in this very entertaining flick
25 December 2013
"American Hustle" is a pretty darn good, entertaining, and fun film. While I don't think it's director David O' Russell's best film, I still think it is his best directed. It is directed with a flashy style that really fits with the era of the movie. There are many over the top moments and exaggerated camera sweeps that really brings a lot of excitement on screen. The script is layered with hilarious dialogue and deeper meaning of living the "American Dream" than what is actually being presented on screen. However, I wish it did have more focus and a tighter story as it did feel like it was all over the place. The journey is also more satisfying than the actual conclusion.

The cast is great and the director really gets some amazing performances from the cast. Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Bradley Cooper are great in their roles and play very dimensional characters. They make them come alive and their on-screen chemistry is great. However, the real stand-out in this star studded cast is Jennifer Lawrence, who doesn't have as much depth or screen time, but commands total attention on-screen. She embodies everything that the movie is going for by being over the top, zany, and full on entertaining. Every time she was off-screen, I kept on begging for more.

Overall, "American Hustle" is a really good movie that is equal parts entertaining and thought provoking. It never reaches any emotional highs and needs some focus, but David O' Russell's stylish direction, use of high energy music, and committed cast makes this movie something special. I give it 4.5/5

One of my favorites of the year
25 December 2013
"Saving Mr. Banks" is easily one of the best movies to come out this year. It tells the tale behind the making of Disney's beloved classic "Mary Poppins," but it is so much more than just a typical 'making of a movie' movie. While many of these types of films aren't as good as the movie they are about, this one is different. It feels like a companion piece to the beloved classic. It allows us to appreciate the trials and tribulations Disney had to go through to make his magnum opus. However, it is also more about P.L. Traverse and why she loves her character so much and why Mary Poppins holds such a special place in her heart.

Director John Lee Hancock does a great job of making this film something truly special. He balances witty humor with emotional depth, but does so without being too sappy or melodramatic. The film is also well written by being more personal than just being a movie about making a movie. The themes of letting and moving on are handled well and really becomes relatable to anyone watching.

The performances are top-notch. Tom Hanks makes a pretty good Disney and he isn't sugar coated either. The real standouts are Emma Thompson and Colin Farrell. They give strong dimensional performances that makes us truly care and sympathies with the characters.

Overall "Saving Mr. Banks" is a truly great and beautifully told film. Its individual parts may not be the years best, but as a complete film it is the whole package. It's a movie that exemplifies why we go to the movies and what Disney stands for as an entertainment corporation. It is a movie that is equal parts heartfelt, witty, charming, entertaining, and emotionally satisfying. I give it 5/5

Frozen (I) (2013)
9/10
Best animated movie of 2013
1 December 2013
"Frozen" is a fantastic story about two sisters and the power of the love between them. It is about letting go, being yourself, and having faith in someone even though they don't have faith in themselves. All great messages for people to live by. The themes and moral are handled well through the film and not once does it become preachy or grating.

The film is superbly directed with great attention to the script and character development. Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee keep us on our toes by slipping in some smart humor and just as intelligently placed moments of true emotions. The film is paced pretty well, but in certain key moments, particularly the ending, it tends to rush through it. However, it's not rushed in a jarring way, but I did wish the film would slow down at certain points. A sharp script gives us well rounded characters and themes that we can all learn from. The two leads are given equal attention to and their relationship is handled incredibly well, especially in the intro of the film. The beginning of the film does a great job of introducing the characters and setting up their relationship. I was literally tearing up because of how real and honest the bond between the sisters were in the beginning and throughout the rest of the movie.

Characters are great in this film. Anna, voiced by Kristen Bell, is one of the two leads. She's probably the most awkward and quirky Disney princess we've ever had. She's a bit of a spazz, always tripping or bumping into things and fumbling over her words when she's nervous. It's quite cute and a joy to watch such an honest and real character. A lot of her flightiness comes from her being sheltered in a castle for such a long time with little interaction with other people. However, she's also determined and very open to meeting new people and helping her friends. Elsa, voiced by Idina Menzel, the other lead is the complete opposite of Anna. She's more reserved and her actions are always calculated to a tee. She has magical powers, but due to an incident that happened when she was younger, she fears that people will loath her for her gift. She doesn't talk as much and usually prefers to be alone. The relationship between the two is really the highlight and it is heart breaking to see them rift away. One last character that I want to mention is Olaf. This character is probably the most worrisome part about the film for most people as Disney can sometimes be hit or miss with their side characters. However, here we have a huge hit with Olaf. He's a bit oblivious, but he's also incredibly likable and sweet. He gets some of the best lines in the movie and he's just a joy to watch because he doesn't try to steal the spot light from what's actually important. The rest of the characters are great and defined very well.

The animation in the film is gorgeous. The characters move fluidly and the expressions on their faces are where some of the most intense emotions of the film come from. Elsa's magical powers are used well and there is both beauty and danger to it. The colors are vibrant and the use of blues and other colder colors really makes us feel the chills of the eternal winter.

Like many classic Disney movies, this one is also a musical and a great one at that. The musical numbers are some of the best since the 90s films. Robert and Kristen Lopez did an amazing job with the soundtrack. The songs range from ballads to showstoppers to sincere to fun, but not one song feels out of place or stops the movies progression. My two favorite songs are "For the First Time In Forever" and "Let It Go," both are powerful ballads that really give us a sense of what the characters are like and what they want. "For the First Time In Forever" is a duet between Anna and Elsa. I enjoy the contrasting lyrics as Anna is excited and Elsa is more afraid of her inauguration. "Let It Go" is the big show-stopping ballad about Elsa, finally liberating herself from her frustrations. Idina Menzels's voice is so powerful that I had goosebumps by the end of it. The rest of the songs are great as well and quite memorable with strong lyrics and powerful accompanying music. I bet you'll be humming and singing the songs long after watching the film.

Overall, "Frozen" is a magnificent film filled with gorgeous animation, relatable and well-defined characters, toe tapping music, and a story that will melt even the coldest of hearts. Some people might be upset that their isn't a strong central villain in this film, but I think it is a plus because then we can focus on the struggles and strains between Anna and Elsa. It is easily the best animated film of 2013 and a future classic that we'll all watch over and over again. I give it 4.5/5, beautiful movie from start to finish.
