Altered Carbon (2018)
Got pulled in
I remember watching the 1st episode of Altered. I had gotten pulled because I had heard that Anthony Mackie was taking over the Lead in S2. I watched S1 because I don't like "en media res" (-2 spelling). That's funny because when I write, I write that way but I don't like watching that way.
So in S1, I meet Takachei (-2 sp) and Quell. I was like "Whoa!" The Male Lead in S1? Wow!!! I'm gonna start watching all his stuff. Man! That Dude is incredible. Quell? Philosophe turned Drill Sergeant turned Fierce Warrior turned Lover. She pulled me in further. I was never gonna lose sight of her until I met Lizzie and the AI of The Nevermore.
So I see in S1 that we are building a great piece of ensemble story. Rei had some nice story going on and then the Sibling Fight scene (Cain and Abel-ish). Loved that!
The whole sleeve thing and the displaced consciousness was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cool! I was following getting pulled in deeper ( and I don't really dig Sci-Fi like that). I'm more of a high drama and action type of story. Altered keep me interested on all cylinders.
Finally, S2 comes around and and the transition to Anthony as Lead occurred. I liked it. The gunshot was incredible and the reveal was exactly what I wanted. When I saw Danica Harlan (formerly of Power-wowzers). I got pulled in again. Then when Colonel Carrera revealed himself, I thought that the story was wrapping up. My fingers are crossed that there is still room to grow because I'm thoroughly invested in this story and its ensemble.
But if it goes away then I've enjoyed the ride. #LongLiveQuellFalconer
Concussion (2015)
Well that went well.
This film is an emotional poignant look at a subject that touches all America. Wow! 1st -let me saw that after Will in "Ali", I realize that he can really tap into real people. He can get there, transform and leave you speechless in his portrayals. He is a Master of the Craft and can reach in and touch the soul of the Source Reference while astounding you with minor characterizations (rubbing of his hands and the other " oddities" that make all is us human). He gets it. Humanity is humanity. He us the Epitome of Shakespeare's writing about Humanity. Will is no fore a Shakespearean Actor as Shakespeare's was a real Psychologist. Neither of them profess to be the latter thing but both get there and command our attention and demand our respect not because they are so talented (both are) but because they are both undeniably right.
I was in awe of Will Smith working his magic in " Concussions". A story about an accomplished man wanting to do the right thing because it was right. That's the crux of Dr. Omalu Bennett. He just wanted to tell the truth and idealistically hold onto his Hippocratic Oath with a iron fist and White Knuckles. Because if this film, I will read the Source Material-" Game Brain". Will showed us everything about Dr. Bennett to include his motive behind his research. I loved it! Wow! Dr. Bennett should be proud that he was portrayed as what he is-An Anerican Hero ( and I like Football). In fact, I cried like a baby when I got cut from my High School Football team after tryouts. BTW-I'm 51 now and the pain still makes me pause for a moment. Of course, I found Lacrosse (America's 1st Team Sport) and carry that torch even today. Can you imagine the torch that the players that died carried. BTW-I remember Junior Seau. Nuf Sed on that.
This film was for parents. This film was to show that "..you can fight City Hall and win..." This film is tell and/or remind Coroprations like Big Tobacco and Exxon-Valdez that sometimes things hurt people. This film helped ease my mind because my 10-year-old wants to play contact football and my 9-year-old talks about being an Atlanta Falcon because if what he sees on the TV screen. This film is for every Sports enthusiast and fan to let them know there is more to the game than what they see. This film says "Hey, the greatest enemy to this game is nit what you can see but it's what's you can't see"
This film may have just out on the blast the work of a man that wanted to help a Sport that he didn't know and didn't even love. This film may have saved my kids life...and I'm OK with that. I'm okay because now I got into helping my son with eyes wide open instead of eyes wide shut. Will Smith, thank you for this film. Dr. Omalu Bennett , thank you for your work . I will tell you that every tear you cried is a tear that I don't have to cry....neither do the 82% of Football Fanatiks!
Spy (2015)
Comedy has a new name and its Jason
Jason, Jason , Jason. I expected Melissa to be funny- not you. I expected You ( Jason) to be All-Action hero- not Melissa. What a great example of "Trading Places".👀. Wow! The comedy was light-hearted and fun ( just like Identity-Thief). I love Jude Law. Can we give him a nickname like Jay El-Double U. Great fun outside of Aldo...when you throw him in, it's a laugh ride minute. The CiA Agent in the ear was a great device that started out as a gag but ended up being a very useful tool. I love it and when they turned it on Melissa-I was in heaven. Nice use of the Spy Genre. A little Rom-com( maybe), a little action ( yep except scratch a little), no major explosions, fast car chases, or other usual devices. This was Melissa playing against type and Jason playing against type and Aldo playing all types with a nuclear weapon thrown in just for giggles . By the way-fight scene with the knife and frying pan-GENIUS! Uber-Genius! What a great fight scene! It was wonderful. BRAVO!!!! I loved it and went back to review it again and again. Who told Melissa that she could fight? I hope that she asked for it! I know that I would have. I love movies like this and want to see Ms. Change of Identiies 😳 do more globe trotting like Mr.bean (I'm sorry- Johnny English). Can we hook her up with Maxwell Smart, The Rock, and Johnny English? Let that be the end of the trilogy and I will be a very, very, very happy movie watcher. More Melissa please! PLEASE! Thank you.
Some Kind of Beautiful (2014)
Just as the name suggests
I loved this because it showed me that we've been sleeping on Pierce Brosnan out side of James Bond. What makes this Englishman think that he can woo women successfully? James Bond. Remington Steele. That's what. Ahhhh! But I saw as a Terroirst/Asssasin in "Survivor" with Ms. Jovinch ( I hope that's right). Anyway, after that I realized that I've been sleeping on Pierce. This movie is interesting beyond compare. It consists of Pierce, Selma Hayek, Ben McKenzie ( from Gotham), Malcolm McDowell. The story line is along the lines of very Rom-Com but it's fun and juicy. I love Selma's role with Jessuca Alba backing her up. This movie will make you laugh and clap your hands as root for the bad guy/good guy/ lover boy which changes characters. You must see this just to Deke's wife from "The King of Queens". Must see.
Last Tango in Halifax (2012)
It's a beautiful part of the world
This is a great piece! The secondary characters are the losers here. The primary characters- two elderly people in love. I love Derek Jacobi almost as much as Sir Patrick Stewart. The family of these two are not having a good life. The Old Folks are teaching all of us that love happens at all ages. It's wonderful to watch and even better when the viewer engages in their love. I hope that this becomes another "British Invasion" like the Beatles and "The Office".
Wow! I love the twists and turns of these peoples lives. The British language makes this a Dallas mixed with DownTown Abbey. It's a wonderful piece about love, friendship and marriage. One of the secondary characters says, " I don't know what know what normal relationships are like. I've seen them but I don't know how to do them." My advice- watch the older folks because they know how to do this thing crazy little thing called love.
I'm on Season 1-EP 4 and I'm looking at a guilty pleasure that. I can watch with my tea finger out. I'm feeling this nice British escape from my affinity for "Empire". Ya' know, now that I think about it-"Empire" might run a close 2nd because the lead older female says " I can be quite romantic when I want to be". Know what Mum? I believe you and I'm willing to watch your love bloom with your beau from 60 years ago that you just reunited with. I like watching older people fund and mature love. It helps me to understand my gifting and I'm not even 60.😇
Survivor (2015)
Very Good movie
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Got a kick out of seeing Pierce Brosnan out of type. Loved his character. Loved the plot-Protction of the Homeland always works really well.
The piece started out a little slow after T-Zero (inciting event) , a little slow but I was willing to wait for the payoff. When it did pay off and it paid off in a Jason Bourne type of way. Nice job for Milla.
Would like to see her do more of these. Maybe even team her with Bond in his next movie and see what happens. S/O the writer and Director, very nice surgical use of large-well known talent. Did not expect to see Angela Bassett but again, nice use of her. Her role mirrored Viola Davis's role in " Law-Abiding Citizen" and hopefully Her role in "Suicide Squad" will shine more light for these roles. Love Viola Davis and she can do no wrong in my book- even in the case of murder.
Angela Davis gives me a similar feel as Viola Davis. Angela can do no wrong in my book so any chance to see her is a study in acting for me. Again, very good movie and hope to see a sequel. Thanks,
Maxwell Highsmith
