The Cowboy and the Lady (1938)
Fun movie!
I watched this movie for the first time on what used to be a great channel AMC when I was about 10 years old. At the time, I thought old movies were silly especially black and white ones. I had all the stereotypes down and hated westerns most of all. After seeing this movie I was hooked on old movies, and watched AMC religiously, but never saw this one again until last year when TCM premiered it on their channel.
Is it the greatest storyline ever told? Umm,no. I think a lot of people miss an important line to make it seem more plausible. Mary Smith grew up on a farm with her father and uncle until her father decided to get into politics for whatever reason. She even makes a comment to him early on that she wished they could go back to those days before she even met Stretch. Thus making it more realistic that she wouldn't miss the rich life.
The pantomime scene is the best scene and stuck with me for years. What a man in love will do.
Higher and Higher (1943)
Not an A list film but fun
This movies should never be listed as one of the best films of all times, but I enjoy this film every time I watch it. I would watch it just for the songs, because there are some very beautiful songs in it. I got an XM radio just so I can listen to songs from this era.
The movie provides a little twist to the usual Cinderella story. Here is the maid supposed to be finding her Prince Charming and become rich, but all she wants to do is be a maid and marry the valet who enjoys the chance to play a rich girl once in awhile. Millie never gets what she is supposed to do providing for some comedic scenes. One of my favorite's is the Butler's Ball when she does everything to keep dancing with her love including losing her skirt.
This movie is a fun twist on an old fashioned tale. If you want meaningful storyline with a big plot line don't watch it, but if you want some light-hearted laughs and good 40's music than this is for you.
Remember WENN (1996)
Just a wonderful show!
I miss this show terribly! It is still my favorite show of all time. No matter how many other shows I start watching they never beat it. I started watching it in high school at about the age 15 and joined the list online and made wonderful friends through my interest. Most of them I still talk to today.
I liked how it was not just a drama or a comedy but it was a dramedy. Being a historian and WWII buff especially this show intrigued me from the beginning. Plus we got to see some great stars of the past before they passed away. The great acting done by all the cast brought it to life and made it more real then a television show.
This show was never about dirty comedy or about who's all sleeping with who like many of the comedies on today. It is clean good fun that anyone of any age can enjoy. We never did learn that answer to the one supposedly dirty joke about the queen of hearts and the elephant or something like that.
