The Stranger (2020)
Not a classic (yet)
Although it did keep me coming back for more on a daily basis and I overall really enjoyed watching it the ending of this series felt somewhat disappointing.
It all works out, there are no obvious plot holes or loose ends as such and there is a connection between what's going on and all the characters involved.
The whole thing really reminded me of a classic British detective series because of its 'whodunnit' feel and in the way that the subplots sort of distract from an answer to that question but all make sense in the story world.
I think that the problem I have with it is that in those detectives the story is first of all told within an hour/hour and a half and it therefore felt a bit anticlimactic for the 8 hours or so that it is.
The acting is brilliant with Paul Kay and Jennifer Saunders as personal favourites. I think however that what makes the British detective story great is the investment in the lead detective's character. Despite the fact Siobhan Finneran is good as the lead detective with a personal involvement in the case there is something missing in terms of strong personality of the character. She is likeable in a way but does not have the background that a Morse, Fitz or Barnaby have built up over the course of several series. The sideplots also do not allow this to develop enough. There is also nothing to build on further really in a next series as there was with The Killing for example.
So it has potential but maybe in a shorter format, with more focus on Johanna Griffin's character, so it doesn't disappoint after watching 8 episodes that could have been made as one.
