Jim Gaffigan: Comedy Monster (2021)
Really Bad
What happened to Gaffigan? I thought he was very funny a few years ago. Then he did that awful special on Amazon Prime. And now this hot garbage on Netflix. My wife and I used to be big Gaffigan fans and we sat through this whole special without so much as a chuckle let alone barking out a belly laugh like we did when he was in his heyday. Maybe the guy's just run out of good material but whatever the reason he's one of those comics who seems to have reached the end. I know I won't waste time on any more of his stuff.
Santa Inc. (2021)
Horrendous
If this is what being "woke" get us count me out. This was just an opportunity to spread the woke narrative that all white men are bad, women don't need men, and all other forms of nonsense. This was absolutely horrendous and I couldn't get through more than three episodes. Shame on Seth Rogan and Sarah Silverman and shame on HBO. What a pile of garbage.
Cry Macho (2021)
Bad Movie
Well, I read many of the bad reviews for Clint Eastwood's latest movie, Cry Macho. But I'm saving the new Sopranos-based movie for tomorrow night when Teresa and I can watch it together so I figured "Hey, it's Clint Eastwood. How bad can it be?" Well, the answer is really, really bad. Listen, I don't need for a lot to happen in a movie as long as there's a good plot and acting. But this movie not only had nothing going on but anytime something started to move along a bit the absurd dialect and absolutely horrendous acting job by the child star who performed opposite Eastwood, Eduardo Minett, ruined any chance this movie had of even being adequate. Maybe Eastwood owed Minett's family money otherwise there's no logical reason why he got this part. Simply put, that kid cannot act. Most of the time when he was supposed to be showing a deeply hurt, abused, sympathetic kid, he instead came off as a pouty, spoiled moron. And excuse me if I have trouble swallowing the fact that a 91 year old Eastwood attracted not one but two babes during the flick. One offered to hop in the sack with him not 5 minutes after meeting him. And the other made google eyes at him that would have embarrassed a 12 year old girl. I've been an Eastwood fan my whole life and that hasn't changed. With that said, it might be time for Clint to hang them up.
Let Him Go (2020)
Slow Pace, Unlikeable Characters
First, this movie would have been better if they'd have cut out about 25-30 minutes of nothingness. Second, more than anything I think this flick was about a man who had finally had enough and decided he'd rather die than listen to his wife's constant peck, peck, peck as she chipped away at his soul. Diane Lane's character was one of the most unlikable supposed "heroes" I've ever seen in a movie. In the end she got what she wanted and it only cost her husband his fingers and eventually his life, and the lives of an entire other family of five. But hey, I guess it was worth it because she whispered in his ear after he took a bullet meant for her. Hard to believe she's supposed to be the "good guy" in this movie. I feel sorry for the kid and his mother who are going back to live with her. It's hard to imagine a worse fate. What a mess.
Small Town Crime (2017)
Very Entertaining
What a great movie. I had never heard of this flick and ran across it while surfing on Netflix last night. Excellent acting. Solid plot. Obviously superb directing. I'm surprised this movie wasn't rated higher and hasn't received more positive publicity. I really enjoyed it.
Wander (2020)
Incomprehensible
What in the holy heck was that? A muddled, incomprehensible, confused mess. I couldn't tell if I was watching a murder mystery, one man's descent into madness, a science fiction movie, or a big-screen version of an LSD trip. What a horrible movie. I'm a Tommy Lee Jones fan but even he seemed high in this flick.
Monster Hunter (2020)
Great Action
I really enjoyed the action scenes. I'd give them 9 stars. However, I had to take away one star for the scene where a group of Rangers were impressed by an officer calling them "ladies" simply because she was a woman. And I took away another star for a bunch of Rangers being motivated by an officer by ... all joining in to sing a song in a combat zone. Those two scenes were so ludicrous as to be offensive to anyone who has ever served. I literally cringed. They were early in the movie and I came close to turning it off at that point. I'm glad I didn't so anyone so inclined should give it a chance. It is a really good action/fantasy flick.
Black Rock (2012)
Absolutely Ridiculous
One of the most inane movies I've ever seen. OK, let me set the stage for you. Three untrained, unarmed, scrawny young women who between the lot of them barely have the muscle mass to lift their arms above their heads, versus three trained, ex-military men 18 days removed from fighting in Iraq (according to them they also fought in Afghanistan) all armed with long guns and big military-style K-Bar knives. Stranded on a remote island. Who do you think won? I'm literally ashamed of myself for sitting through this man-hating drivel.
The Informer (2019)
Terrible Ending
I was ready to give this movie a rating of about 8 ... and then the last 5 minutes happened. Another rip-off ending. The rest of the movie was very entertaining.
Nate Bargatze: The Greatest Average American (2021)
Hilarious
I'm a big fan of Nate's unassuming, self depreciating humor. I wondered how the outdoor, social-distancing venue/crowd would go over on a special but I barely noticed it. He had me in stitches for the entire 60 minutes of this special. There's nothing better than an hour of great stand-up comedy.
Coming 2 America (2021)
Trash
How you end up with this unfunny, 'woke' mess with the classic that was "Coming to America" as your premise is beyond me. What a complete waste of a great cast. I didn't crack even one smile let alone laugh. I'm not sure I've ever been more disappointed by a movie in my life.
One Foot in the Grave (1990)
Comedy Gold
I almost stopped after the first episode of season 1 as I wasn't sure I was going to like this series. I was hooked by episode 2 and ended up binge-watching this entire series in 5 days and couldn't stop laughing. Richard Wilson is superb ... he was made for this part. Annette Crosby is great as his long-suffering wife. And Angus Deayton as his neighbor is probably my favorite character. I personally thought the entire cast was outstanding. I'm a big fan of British comedy but I'd be hard-pressed to say I enjoyed any other shows as much as I enjoyed this. I had 3 or 4 good belly laughs with each episode. I could have easily watched 6 more seasons. I put it on a par with "Still Game." Absolutely superb.
Survive the Night (2020)
Ridiculously Bad
The characters played in this movie may collectively be the dumbest group of people ever put together on screen. From the bad guy standing there making small talk with his brother who was lying there in surgical limbo for most of the night when he should have been escaping or hunting the family members to the family members hanging around all night after they escaped I found the entire premise inane. I was particularly irritated by the insane amount of noise these people made, all of which went unnoticed by the villain in the movie even though they were out in the boondocks where every small noise would be amplified ten times over compared to making the same noise in the city. I found myself hoping the ending was a shootout in which they all died. Bruce Willis must have been SO hard up for a paycheck.
Soul (2020)
Superb
Wow. Just wow. I watched Disney's "Soul" with my grandson this afternoon and it was superb. One of the best flicks I've watched in awhile. Highly, highly recommend. Yeah, I know, it's a cartoon. Uh ... I LOVE cartoon movies. This is a great movie regardless of whether you like cartoons or not. The last movie I watched on Disney was the "real-person" remake of "Mulan." Didn't like it at all. On the other hand the original cartoon version of "Mulan" is one of my all-time favorite flicks. Anyway ... I strongly recommend you give "Soul" a look-see. Not only a great message with some outstanding music but laugh-out-loud hilarious too. The cat in particular had me busting my gut. Like I said, I thought this flick was outstanding ... one of the best movies I've seen in quite some time. Ten out of ten stars.
Sand Sharks (2012)
Ugh.
God that was bad. My 6 year old grandson loves shark movies and even he thought this was bad. I wonder how many real actors are out there trying to get work while Hulk Hogan's daughter absolutely stinks up the screen with performances like this? Terrible, terrible move.
Shark Lake (2015)
Beyond Dumb
Quite possibly the dumbest collective group of people ever featured in a movie. The shark was easily the smartest creature of the bunch. Sara Maluka Lane's character couldn't have been more unlikable if the intent of this movie was solely to make you hate her. Shark flicks are usually reliable time-killers but this seemed to take forever to end. God Dolph Lundren must have really, really needed a paycheck.
After Life (2019)
Superb.
I'm a big fan of Ricky Gervais and this may be his best work. It is actually hard to describe "After Life" simply because at times it is laugh-out-loud funny and at other times it is so sad I sit there with a lump in my throat like I'm ready to break out crying. It is unique to say the least but at least for my money one of the best series I've ever watched. It centers around Ricky Gervais who plays Tony, a man who has all-but lost the will to live since his wife died of cancer. Virtually every moment of every day is a struggle for Tony. I know that doesn't sound funny in the least yet somehow this talented cast makes it work. The entire cast does a great job but in particular Joe Wilkinson as the Postman, Paul Kaye as the Psychiatrist, and Roisin Conaty as the Sex Worker are absolutely hilarious. Paul Kaye most notably has me in tears I'm laughing so hard. If you weren't mentally disturbed when you walked into his office an hour of "therapy" with him would definitely push you over the edge. I'd highly recommend "After Life" to anyone who likes smart comedies with complex, very human characters. Can't wait for season three to be released.
Child's Play (2019)
Horrendous
What a horrendous movie. You know it's a bad reboot when the most likeable character is actually the psycho doll. I found myself actively rooting for this group of completely detestable people to be chopped up by Chucky. When will modern movie makers realize that in order to make a good horror flick you need to include some characters who are actually nice/smart enough to merit rooting for?
The Irishman (2019)
Unbelievably Bad
Well, that was awful. If this excruciatingly long, pointless, meandering mess wasn't a Scorsese film and didn't include a famous, though ancient, cast, it would be getting universally panned. Seriously, what was the point? Three and a half hours of watching old men try to act like a bunch of bad-asses and I still don't get the point. That's three and a half hours I'll never get back.
Charlie's Angels (2019)
Really?
Really? This is entertainment? This movie should have been titled "I Hate Men." I saw it with my grown liberal daughter. Even she was embarassed.
Avatar (2009)
Great Special Effects - Bad Movie
I heard so much about this movie before I watched it I couldn't wait. As advertised the special effects were spectacular. However, the movie itself was so cliche and predictable I have to assume it was written by a washed-up old hippie. Here's the plot in a nutshell. The Evil and that's EVIL with a capital E military and corporate complexes want to destroy the pure-as-driven-snow and Angelic and that's ANGELIC with a capital A non-humans who live in the trees and flowers. The Angels are perfect and just want to live their lives in peace smelling flowers and flying dragons. The military guys are all evil (well, except for the one female troop who is innocent and wonderful and the star of the flick who is paralyzed so he is physically unable to perform evil acts any more). The rest of the troops/contractors ... evil and horrible. They'll kill anyone and anything just because. There is no nuance to this movie at all. There are two distinct groups and one is all good and one is all bad. As a 30 year military veteran I was seething when it was over. I wanted to rate it 1 out of 10 stars but that would not be fair to the fantastic special effects. With a little effort this movie could have been outstanding. It wasn't. In my opinion it wasn't even average.
Hotel Artemis (2018)
A Hot Mess
All I can surmise is that Jodie Foster must be broke. Otherwise why would she be involved in this horrible movie? Has she really devolved from Silence of the Lambs to this hot mess? The dialogue was awful. The action was cartoonish. And guess what ... this movie actually had a decent cast. Considering the on-screen talent involved it is hard to believe it was even possible to make a movie this bad. I've always been a big fan of Jodie Foster and to be honest it just makes me sad to see her in a movie this awful.
Holmes & Watson (2018)
Horrendous
The only reason I rated this move a 1 out of 10 stars is because negative numbers aren't available. I didn't crack a smile let alone laugh. Will Farrell's flicks just seem to get worse and worse as he plays the same character over and over again. John C. Reilly is a very good actor who for some reason keeps teaming up with the over-the-hill Farrell. The result was this unfunny, irritating mess. The only good thing I can say about this movie was it was only around an hour and a half. Mind you, an hour and a half too long but still, a short movie by today's standards. This is only the second review I've felt compelled to write but this movie was so bad I just had to tell someone. If I had it to do over again I'd watch "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" for maybe the tenth time. Somewhere along the way great comedies, or even adequate comedies, have become a thing of the past.
Katherine Ryan: Glitter Room (2019)
Angry, Bitter, and Predictable
Man-hating waste of an hour. I didn't believe her set ups for any of her "jokes" as they seemed contrived and made up simply to make a point. Unfortunately the point was always the same. Men bad. Women who like and/or live with men bad. Conservative men more bad. It was 60 minutes if getting figuratively bashed over the head. I have no idea why anyone thinks she's funny because she didn't cause me to even crack a smile and I'm a stand-up junkie. My grown daughter who is quite liberal watched the special with me and when it was over turned to me and said "That is one angry woman. She's about as funny as a box of rocks." I would have said "She's about as funny as a kick in the groin" but you get the point. If you're tempted to watch this I recommend you watch something else, read a good book, or hit yourself in the head with a hammer. You'll have more fun.
Bullet to the Head (2012)
Decent Action Flick
Decent action flick ... typical Stallone. My biggest problem with the movie was Sung Kang's role. He was absolutely horrible as a cop and made for the worst teaming with Stallone I've ever seen. Really detracted from my enjoyment of the movie. Just goes to show how casting can make or break a movie.
