Iruvar (1997)
the BEST Indian movie i have ever seen.
i was a huge fan of maniratnam, until i saw this movie. after watching this movie, i was no longer a maniratnam fan, i was, from then on, a maniratnam worshiper. i can easily say, this is one of the best Indian movies i have ever seen. it is a beautifully made movie, with a very powerful screenplay and strong direction, and not to mention a brilliant acting by the cast.
the dialogs of this movie was very moving. i am not a tamilian. i am a keralite. but still, the Tamil dialogs in the movie, and the patriotism towards Tamil nadu which was portrayed in this movie was really moving and powerful. i have always thought of suhasini as a charming actress who appears in malayalam and Tamil movies, but now i can say that she is one hell of a script writer too.
the acting by mohanlal and prakash raj were just too brilliant and awesome. many scenes of mohanlal just brought tears into my eyes.. the scene where he finds out that his first movie as a hero got canceled, the scene were he finds out that his first wife push pa has passed away and he insists that he wanted to see her face on more time, and the scene where he makes a public speech etc ...... maniratnam has later stated that he would never work with mohanlal again, as maniratnam often forgot to say "cut" in many scenes, 'cause he was mesmerized by mohanlal's acting.
the songs and background score of this movie is just beautiful. a r rah man once again proved that he is one of the best music directors in India.
it would be a sin if i don't give a special mention to the cinematographer santhosh shivan. this movie has one of the best cinematography ever, brilliant job by santhosh shivan.
so in short, the movie has a very strong direction, beautiful screenplay, brilliant acting, awesome cinematography, awesome songs and good editing. so nothing short of 10.. just a beautiful movie.
Ordinary (2012)
if it wasn't for a very disappointing climax, ordinary would have been "extraordinary"
i must say, this movie had great potential. the first half of the film was just too impressive. it had a great story, a good screenplay, good locations, and very rich humor. but in the second half, the story started to fall apart. i am guessing that the writer ran out of ideas to take the story forward, because the story during the later parts of the second half was just pathetic. some writers have a notion, that if they make the most unexpected man in the story the villain, it will be some huge thrilling suspense or something like that,, but in most cases, it doesn't work out. it definitely didn't work out for this film.
as for the rest of the departments of the film,,,,, the acting by all actors except asif ali was really good. i am really sorry to disappoint asif ali fans, but i didn't like asif's acting at all. as for chakochan and biju menon,, they were just pure awesome in the first half. the cinematography was also really good, which captured the scenic beauty of the beautiful place called gavi.
i would have given this film a solid 10 out of 10 if it wasn't for the disappointing second half and climax.
Grandmaster (2012)
an enjoyable movie with no police movie clichés.
when a person from kerala thinks of police movies,, what comes to his mind?? a heroic and brave police officer,, who has the capability of beating up 10-15 bad guys at once and who continuously delivers punch dialogues, and mocks and stand up to his seniors who happens to be bad guys. and not to mention senseless action sequences. but grandmaster is an exception to such movies. the hero of the movie does not have super-human abilities and does not deliver punch dialogues throughout. that is the thing i liked most about this movie.
in short, grandmaster is a sensible movie with a good screenplay (not an outstanding one though), which does not insult the viewers' intelligence with the senseless clichés mentioned above.
the casting of this movie is very good. mohanlal did his role as inspector general chandrashekhar brilliantly. the supporting cast was also good.
we can safely say that b unnikrishnan, has matured both as a director and a script writer, and hope he continues to make good movies like these.
