Face/Off (1997)
What a complicated/storyline
I just finished watching this movie about 20 minutes ago, and I feel a review needs to be written about it's awesomness.
I can't even count how many strange situations there were. This includes how ridiculously weird it felt knowing by the time the switch happened, not only was it driving the characters insane of each others portrayals, it was also driving me crazy as well. I walked around the room during saying what the hell? This is nuts! This is one of the worst possible identity situations you could possibly get yourself into. Brilliantly written and executed concept on the script's part, but the action was, like many blockbuster smashes, too over the top. Nicholas Cage needs some better acting lessons as well.
I'm ending this post with a solid 8 out of 10. I was pleased, and not willing to ask for my 2 and a half hours back.
Unknown (2011)
They chose the name well...
I'm gonna begin on a high note, and say I love Liam Neeson. Everything from Star Wars Ep 1 to Batman Begins to Taken. He is one Irish Badass!
Now to the movie. It has a very good tone to it right from the get-go to set the mood. Proper music, proper color temperature for the atmoshpere, good camera angles, and nice pacing into the story which follows throughout. I may have only found 'dead' moments happening twice throughout the movie, where I thought, where's the movie going from here, and when is it going to pick up. Decent on the film makers part.
Lastly, I was quite happy that it was very unpredictable for majority of the film. I like that they stumped me and my friend to make us look like idiots by the end of the film. You're trying so hard to figure out from the trailer how this movie's going to end, and then once the end arrives, you should've kind of seen it coming from about twenty five minutes in. That is if you have seen a fair bit of identity crisis films like I have.
Great solid 7 out of 10. to quickly recap; great unpredictability, fitting atmosphere, good actors, even ground of suspense and action. What's not to like?
Take a view.
The Mechanic (2011)
A remake that actually follows the original quite well!
You don't see enough accurate remakes of movies these days, and that's why I was particularly happy with this one.
To start off on a different note, I've never quite enjoyed the on screen pleasure of Jason statham much. I'll let ya know that right up front as a guy who doesn't necessarily flock to the theatre every time I hear about one of his new films coming out. As well, I must confess, I've never seen the original (The Mechanic (1972)) either, but I have read a very detailed and accurate storyline/review of it, and it seems that based on the specific events that take place in each Mechanic film are quite accurate between one another. As well, it seems, from comparison, watching the remake, and knowing the stars of the original (the mechanic being Charles Bronson) that both sets of actors seem to fit the role quite well for this typical turn your mind off and watch stuff explode and plans go wrong action film. There is a few humorous moments as well. Kind of tongue in cheek, and dark humour combined, in both the original and remake of this film. Take a look if you like any of the contributing aspects this movie has to offer.
Tron: Legacy (2010)
never been so stunned by special effects in my life!
This movie within about the first two minutes of it, and then 10 minutes after that, contains the most groundbreaking, and mind blowing visual/special effects I have ever layed eyes on. The score accompaniment is such that I almost cried, and Jeff bridges and the new guy aren't bad either. I though it was a very decent sequel to continue the series, being that the story, and acting aren't as bad as critics claim. They're just looking for too much in a movie these days. That's the only plain and simple way to say it somewhat politely.
If your looking to get out reality for two hours of your life and watch an emotional story of a bond between a father and son, mixed with the complications of a very (now dark, deceptive) computerized world, I suggest you take a view of this masterpiece in modern day film making.
PS: If you like Electronica/Orchestral music as much as I do, a tear may even sprout from your eye at some point throughout the feature.
