The Shining (1980)
sniff, sniff (spoilers)
25 July 2003
Warning: Spoilers
i just have to say... I picked up the book out of curiosity and then really wanted to see the movie, when it first came out I wasn't even born yet, so I didn't even get the 'here's johnny' line until someone took pity on me and explained it... but the movie itself left so much out, i was personally disappointed with the film. I admire King's writing (too) much, and to see it on screen made me want to kill the tv. the shining to me will always be about Jack's ultimate try for redemption gone horribly wrong, the fact that he would totally destroy any trace of the loving family man that he once was just to allow little Danny leave him behind is just too powerful for words, the 'detail' that the little kid had a frightening gift having to do with smelling oranges is just a bonus to the 'disturbing' factor. in the movie, however, Wendy (another problem) takes Danny and makes a run for it while Jack (always Jack) stays with his new found booze feeding friend, the overlook, which he doesn't do in the book. where the hell is the sickening love that the kid feels for his possessed father??? I mean, please, where are the original characters... which brings me to Wendy... Wendy, Wendy, Wendy, sweet, frail and weak Wendy? Sound familiar? Well if you read the book it shouldn't! If anything, she was the complete oppossite, here you see her accidentally and mostly out of clumsy fear, escape from her mad husband, but she was suppose to be a strong, well grounded woman. and I could go on and on... whatever your opinion is, if you feel like discussing this or any other 'disturbing' movie, please, contact me (queenofmisery@hotmail.com)

amazingly enough, you will not see leo dicaprio in the role of a hero or even a lover, this time, he's depp's autistic younger brother. there are great deliveries by both of these actors and it's an interesting story that will make you feel many emotions at once, because its' a dark glimpse at a less than perfect family and the shame felt by being part of it.

good

leaving aside that the plot is VERY predictable, you end up falling in love with each of the characters. first of all, there's the insecure all to immature baby faced matthew perry, known to all as chandler bing from friends who plays the goofball who ends up keeping an eye on his hopefully soon to be boss's mistress, the ever charming and sincere Neve (amy) and falls in love with her after a really lousy night, it could have been perfect right there, but the problem here is, amy thinks dear oscar (perry) gay , to these two add oliver platt who plays oscar's gay friend/mentor and he'll manage to get a few good chucks out of you.

The Drew Carey Show (1995–2004)
how not love drew?

i mean, it's impossible to not relate to him and the other characters in more than one episode. it's down to earth, which better said, means, this is NOT wholesome, you will not see a happily ever after or a mortal to the story, you'll see deception, failure and almost hear yourself saying 'everyman for himself'as these people chug beer after beer and sit around and watch as their lives go downhill, but it's the almost dark and slutty humor to it that just makes you tune in once and again just to see the characters react, which, by the way are great. the cast is funny and you can tell they are no amateurs. it's a good show.

FreakyLinks (2000–2001)
why did it end????
10 July 2003
yeah, yeah, it seemed like a weird spin off of the blair witch project which could have shown a lack of creativity, but no. it wasn't. if you're a fan of science fiction and just feel either curiosity or just plain thrive on paranormal activity, this is right up your alley. lead role Ethan Embry gives off a pretty believable performance while trying to figure out why his twin brother (who died of unnatural causes) isn't among these friends that solve mysteries and battle personal demons at times. all in all, it was an interesting show.

Lost Souls (2000)
please see!!

winona ryder rarely fails to take you to the exact place where your fear (of childhood in other movies and religion in this) is born and leaves you there, standing on the edge of a cliff wondering if you'll end up jumping or not and you sort of dangle there till the end of the movie (yet if you own a sensible mind, the images will haunt you in your sleep). the movie itself is not that scary in my eye, but it does give you enough insight to let your own doubts and questions lead you to where your true fear may lie and this is the real appeal of the movie, so yeah, i recommend it.

Shrek (2001)
oh, shrek, shrek, shrek...
10 July 2003
hillariously good movie that brings together all your favorite fairy tales and even a few mother goose stories, who would have thought such an innocent seeming movie would make you laugh so hard? then again, you gotta look at the fact that it stars usual multi-character mike meyers in the lead role as an... ogre??? yep, an OGRE, and BIG mouth eddie murphy as a donkey friend. somewhere in the middle is cameron diaz and john lithlow... odd combination, but the result is very entertaining comedy fun for all ages. if at least one of these loving characters doesn't find a place in your heart, with all due respect, you must be dead.

worth seeing
10 July 2003
A very satisfying tale of memories past and the freedom of Kathy Bates' character who finally decides to act like a modern woman based on the youth of an old storyteller at a nursing home when her typical workaholic, dining in front of the numbing tv with a beer in hand husband drags her to see his aunt and she meets this very intriguing and lonesome person. i'm not big on weeping dramas, but this is a movie i can really recommend to anyone who likes a good story that catches you from scene one and makes you think.

Mermaids (1990)
wow
10 July 2003
maybe it was because i saw this movie at a 'tender' age, but it really got to me, it's one of the few movies that can portray you. winona is, as usual, amazing, it's a tough role but she outdoes herself, really, she expressed so many faces of the teen years, complete with doubts and regrets, pain and curiosity and most of all, this want and almost need to hate the mother and then the impossibility to do so, the need to trust her and not knowing how. this is also a critical moment for christina ricci and she too is very believable, and not being a fan of cher, i loathe myself for saying, she gives a damn good show. it's an honest peek into a family that is so much more than meets the eye.

Beetlejuice (1988)
kill your curiosity and just see it
10 July 2003
geena davis goes a long way from 'the fly', but not that long a way. for its time, beetlejuice is extremely intelligent, but now, it looks like a few cheap effects and a promising performance by winona ryder. still, i can't deny that i love this movie all the same mostly because it feeds off the imagination and it is portrayed through tim burton's ever darkening point of view that will hush no critic, and that's always worth seeing. if this comments means anything to you (if you're reading and not just seeing this page), go on and give it a chance, i doubt you'll regret it.
