Jo Koy Has Questionable Writing Skills as a Comedian
7 September 2022
At a minimum. Once, on a radio show, Koy said "that's my stick" when he thought he was saying "that's my shtick".

He actually said the word stick. Like one you find on the ground, and not "shtick .

I still can't believe an adult said this.

Surely the sign of a once in a generation writer.

Which leads us to this movie.

...Very few moments where I didn't want to leave my own house.

Loud, forced, and tired at the same time. The trailer feels like the movie did, and in this case, that's not the best result. Maybe others will like it, I am sure that they are out there. After all, Koy presumably has a stand up career still. It takes all kinds to make the world what it is, nothing inherently wrong with that. To be honest I couldn't make it all the way through this because at a certain point, you start wondering how you found yourself in this spot where you just get lost in thought despite many characters in this movie being loud and doing impressions of a funny movie, etc.

Maybe Koy will dress up in a big body suit for his next flick, like Robin Williams or Eddie Murphy.

We all know what disasters those movies were.

Tragically Overlooked
23 June 2022
If you like it, you love it. A criminally overlooked and absurd spoof of the hero archetype.

And psychedelics as well. There is so much weight to this silliness. And what a trip.

I don't wanna live in a universe where this has less than 1000 IMDB ratings, but here we are.

Barry: starting now (2022)
Season 3, Episode 8
4/10
What Happened to my Excellent Comedy Series?
18 June 2022
I am a huge fan of Barry, since the very first episode of season 1. I loved the blend of comedy and character study. The show even had memorable characters that were killed off in the very first episode, or in one or two other cases, sometime in the first season.

NoHo Hank was and is obviously one of the main sources of comedy in the show. Barry himself was always a little aloof, disturbed, and overwhelmed with inner conflict.

But even he and Sally had their funny moments, especially early on.

Barry getting sucked into an acting class by pure chance was a great source for still YET MORE comedy, with all the characters in that class. And I still miss the as mentioned character that lost his life in the very first episode. Especially after the 3rd rewatch of season 1.

Season 1 was strong all the way through. Season 2 was more of the same if a slight downtick to the more funny elements, with several characters left to still add that dead pan wit, and other absurdities from a variety of characters.

After the long, long wait for season 3, I could not have been more relived it was finally back on the air.

And season 3 started off well enough, if a little lacking in that comedy and character study balance that was nearly perfect in season 1, and nearly as much so in season 2.

As season 3 rolled along, I was starting to fear that they had used up most of their best ideas for the characters funny moments in the first two seasons. That said, they STILL had good ideas, some of them funny, fewer of them actual compelling drama... scattered among most, not all, of season 3's episodes...

There was still enough clever ideas, compelling... enough story lines, and characters I cared about enough to keep watching. But these were sandwiched between many moments that were just not compelling.

The magic, while not at all gone by any means, was somewhat muted in this 3rd season.

Nothing though, could have prepared me for the finale of season 3. Not a bad episode per se, but certainly all the charm and wit was gone.

Seriously, this show had charm and wit. Where is it? The dark turn toward heavy drama was not the breath stopping deep dive that others here seem to be under the impression of. Obviously, in my opinion.

It was all so serious in this episode, and none of it was particularly original or engaging. Which they tried to make up for in heavy handedness.

Don't get me wrong, I am looking forward to season 4, as I sure that even a weak season of Barry is still a welcome change of a TV show, even if it can no longer reach the dizzying highs of the first 2 seasons.

I watched seasons 1 and 2 three, maybe 4 times by now.

I will be shocked if I feel at all compelled to rewatch season 3. Ever.

Anyways, still, bring on season 4! I guess.

It's a Shame People Troll Rate This With 1
22 November 2021
This movie keeps getting better as it goes. The first 10 minutes of dialogue do now give you an insight into the remining dialogue, as perhaps some viewers thought.

I'd also imagine many of the troll ratings with a 1 cane from people who actually love all 99 Fast & Furious movies.

Or people who feel a little too much envy, which, granted the world is not fair, has no justice, and never did.

But that doesn't mean we can't open our minds to a new perspective that we could add to our own. A simple set up for this movie provides the script writer with all the inspiration they needed, and I am glad it got made. It's a shame that it won't find an audience.

The more than people dump on movies like this, the more Marvel crap we will get thrown at our skulls. And less experimentation in film. That's a tragic future for film making.

Like All Gibbons Era A.P, Far Superior to 90s Partridge.
5 January 2021
I am really tired of all these fans from the 90s era Alan Partridge, saying that this short film, or shows like the amazing "This Time with Alan Partridge" are, somehow, "not as classic or as great" as the 90s era Partridge shows.

That is insane to me.

Ever since the 2 Gibbons brothers started writing with Coogan for this character, the character has entered another realm of comedy.

No one else is operating on this level, that I have ever seen. This short film only gets better with repeated viewings. I enjoyed it so much more on my 3rd watch than on my 1st.

Every line is good, but there is so much going on with this mans fragile psyche, that it can take repeated viewings to even get the joke or jokes, going on at any given time.

the character is so much more complex. in terms of the writing and acting, than it ever was is the 90s.

90s Alan Partridge was merely a rough blueprint for the sublime brilliance and mega cringe of the character as he is today.

Basically, ever since "Mid Morning Matters", the character is the funniest thing I can find.

Some of it requires us to be honest with ourselves, in terms of character flaws we may share with Alan.

but don't be too hard on yourself. when you do find yourself relating to one of his petty flaws, you will probably find that Alan takes it to far greater extremes than you ever did. Or, maybe not.

Drowning in Plastic (2018 TV Movie)
10/10
An Ocean Of Viable Solutions
11 August 2019
Watch this to find amazing technological solutions to the plastic problem. This doc is full of hope and optimism. It has many projects that are scaling up, like replacement materials for plastic that dissolve in water, are edible, tasteless, made from seaweed, and accessible to poor parts of the world.

Then there are various sizes and types of collectors for plastic, from mini collectors, to giant wheels, to ocean currant powered and directed collections nets.

There are a few tragic scenes of animals affected by this problems, but the focus on solutions is inspiring and shows us that ingenuity is the way of the future, and human ingenuity is required to make our modern way of life sustainable for hopefully millions of years into the future on this beautiful Earth.

A must watch. I truly believe that where there is a problem created by 20th century technology, a 21st century technology is the solution, whether is it is in prototype stage right now, or just an idea in someones mind at the moment.

The human brain pays attention to bad news 10 times more than it does good news. Remember this when you fell all is lost. All is not lost. All is only beginning to be found.

What Happened, if Anything?
4 February 2019
After watching this movie, I can't tell you what happened. I haven't got the slightest clue. None of the characters were believable. The dialogue was flat and uninspired. The story was forgettable.

David O. Russell just makes photocopies of real movies. I heard him once say that a writer should not be too precious with their words. Maybe he should ignore that advice.

One of the Good TV Comedies.
21 January 2019
It seems like shows like this are facing a dwindling audience. I don't understand how well written, absurd, and entertaining comedies like this struggle to find hordes of adoring fans, while a guy getting into a bathtub full of cheetos gets millions of views and likes on youtube.

This is the 3rd show I've watched on youtube Originals after Sideswiped, and Overthinking With Kat & June. All 3 shows are good, but Ryan Hansons is by far the most funny and silly.

Recommended for fans of Veep, No Activity, Eastbound & Down, Seinfeld, and Curb. Just to name a few.

Takes 2 or 3 Episodes to gel.
1 November 2018
The second half of the second episode and I'm all in on this show. People writing all these reviews don't seem like the target demo, and at the same time, this show is not what it seems at first. Surface level biased negativity might make you miss something entertaining.

I'll keep watching it, because there is more to it that what a surface level negative bias will tell you.

And Brett Gelman is better than I thought he would be in this based on just the pilot.

12 Is Not Enough
19 September 2018
I absoultly love this show. Really personal and creative humor. Offensive and brilliant like Peep Show, Veep, or Curb Your Enthusiasm.

The fact that it is not way more popular is tragic, because there should be more shows like this, and more than 12 episodes.
