La mesita del comedor (2022)
Ummm wow!
I saw that The Coffee Table is making its rounds on social media as "influencers" and "reviewers" cash in on clout on how disturbing this film from Spain is. They are right. Not in a gorefest way, though it has some but in a way that will mess with your head for the entire film. I gave this an 8 and I can see how others may see it different this film is different. The acting is spot on and the fact I don't want to reveal a thing but this has to be 600 words or it's too short. No spoilers at all here. Try not to watch the reviews and just watch the movie. It clocks in at around 90 minutes and you will be affected in some way. Enjoy!?
A Ghost Waits (2020)
Boy Meets Ghost?
I am required to submit at least 600 characters which isn't necessary for this film. I am not saying I didn't enjoy it, far from it. I saw a trailer and found the concept amusing and clocking in at around 80 minutes you won't be pining for your time back. You This may be pining for a ghost played by Natalie Walker. She is adorable in this role
The chemistry between her and Mac Amdrews is simple and charming. No ridiculous jump scares or gore which makes this little gem all the more reasons to watch it. Clever writing and use of b&w helps keeping itself more indie than using B rolls and college film schlock. I meant stock. Or did I?
Malnazidos (2020)
A Zombie film that doesn't suck!
Yes another zombie film, but that statement can be applied to vampires, paranormal so on and so forth. This baby though it's a gem! Set in WW2 with resistance fighters battling the axis filled with zombies of course and how they are being used. This has been done so many times it already makes you want to swipe and pass, but don't! The film is fast paced or rather consistently pace but you feel for the characters enough in the small time given to do so. This is not Train to Busan, nothing is but you will enjoy this, it's almost hard not to! So don't swipe this little nugget of pleasure, instead press play. Thank you for reading this review.
The Black Phone (2021)
Proper Horror Proper Thriller
These days "horror" has many subgenres based on taste and how it is viewed by consumers. This is nothing new. People still find American Psycho to be funny, it is not. We've strayed, but thanks to the same crew that brought us "Sinister" we have a proper horror film. Sinister was and still is one of the best horror films in the past 20 years and The Black Phone has elevated the bar! Ethan Hawke is at his Renaissance in acting, not that he wasn't an incredible actor, he has become iconic in nearly every project he has taken on and here is another feather in his cap. Set in the 70's, a purely creepy period in time, they use this along with the mindset of being a kid growing up in that era. The child actors are incredible and harbor deep scars externally and internally. Think the cast of IT or Stranger Things but steeped in reality and sharp teeth. I won't go into detail but this is a movie horror fans, suspense fans and movie fans should drop their hard earned money on a movie that pays back in dividends. Thank you for reading my review and sorry for it's bloated content.
Slapface (2021)
Better than Malignant
I rarely leave a review I'll just give in to the simpler stars rating, but this one I couldn't help it considering the mediocre reviews. Tune out all the critics and watch this little gem with it's flaws included. This was very interesting and worth the watch. The lead actor was good, this kid has a future. Many compelling and clever elements given the fact that it has budgetary constraints. It's called independent film. We've lost the ability to discern low budget and independent film. Good camera angles and use of lighting or lack there of. No CGI or over the top gore. Yes it has a message as all films do now, but you aren't aware until the credits roll. Not heavy handed forced agenda at all. This was good!
Invasion (2021)
Garbage
3 episodes in and no aliens or nemesis other than themselves. Lazy writing and misleading plot is enough to make you cancel your account. The characters are terrible people so if anything mortally devastating happens to them you don't care because of their askewed moral compass. Over acting the likes of a soap opera especially with the mother and the JASA employee. No empathy can be given to them if any. This may be due to the writing. One is a privileged snot and the other pathetically and knowingly keeps the albatross around her neck. This is an absolute waste of time and all the 7+ stars should be ashamed for spreading this garbage.
Geomgaek (2020)
This is how you make an action film
I don't give 10 stars on much of anything, but this film is incredible. Yes it utilized Denzel Washington 's incredible"Man on Fire", and it utilizes "Man from Nowhere" and those films work because of the stars, and this film is no exception. Jang-Hyuk is the man. He just wants a peaceful life and he doesn't get that. His sword work was exceptional and great cast. This is a very good film! You will not be disappointed!
Sabaha (2019)
Pretty creepy!
This film earns it's run time which is a bit over two hours. The story is intriguing and the acting was good. What this movie has going for it is it's cinematography, absolutely gorgeous even at it's scariest parts. In all honesty they could have added 20 more minutes easily. The script is a bit off at times but the pay off is worth it.
The Night Stalker (1972)
The Night Stalker...still works!
Good ol' Karl Kolchac. I grew up watching the night stalker and I had to buy the season, the only season, that is. Throw out the remake and let's forget that little blight (sorry Townsend) No, no, no my friends I mean the original, the O.G. I can already here a pitch meeting to reboot coming down the trail. You can't replace Kolchac, this show was my favorite growing up. It still works, even in this day and age.
Manyeo (2018)
Korean film sets the bar high!
I saw Witch the subversion when it was released and have been waiting for the sequel that's already done or in post! This is a wild ride from K pop to...a witch(?) Hyper violent and we'll choreographed.
1917 (2019)
Cinematography Oscar...Deakins, Roger Deakins!
1917 is another in the Deakins film bio that will Garner the Oscar for best cinematography, since the dialogue didn't tell the story but the cinematography did. It had to for this insurmountable task to ever come off on screen the film had to tell this story. The one shot illusion was a marvel in how to advance this technique called film making. I love the idea of using ground breaking tech to further the art of film making. This move is incredible, well directed and the cast was incredible. The lead in this film has every right to be a nominee!
Close (2019)
Close another Netflix jewel!
Close is an awesome action- thriller, filled with plenty of intrigue and drama. Noomi Rapace, who is steadily becoming a Netflix Original regular is absolutely mind bogglingly good at action films, able to give as good, if not better, than she gets. This is a solid film and Netflix is putting studios on notice...wake up because if you sleep any longer we won't see you any longer!
Polar (2019)
Netflixs John Wick
To say that "Polar" is Netflixs version of John Wick is not a fair statement. Polar, like Wick, is based on a graphic novel about a retired assassin " The Black Keiser", excellently portrayed by the great Mads Mikkelsen. I won't spoil you with the details, but, I will say while waiting on JW3, Polar is perfect to fill that void of emptiness, you know, murder, violence and good old gun battles! I'm not saying it's on Wick's level (4-5 years to create and training). This was at least closer to it than atomic blonde. Mads is a straight badass and always has been, go check out The Salvation, Age of Uprising, Pusher and the badass, Valhalla Rising! Damn I got goosebumps on that last one. To say his work speaks for itself and for Netflix to pick him as the main character of this action film. Vanessa Hudgens does rather well at portraying the introverted neighbor. This is an action packed wild ride with crazy quirky characters and assassins. Again, this is why Netflix continues to dominate the streaming world and gives Hollywood studios bad dreams when they try to sleep. Polar isn't perfect, but it's far better than what any other medium has to offer.! So check it out and thank the gods we have Netflix!
Hellier (2019)
Grasping at straws
A documentary? This started off pretty interesting but after halfway through episode 2 it lost its focus and then became almost embarrassing to watch. The investigators(?) spent more time trying to verify to themselves sounds they heard, which I didn't, supposed clues, that I never saw and a desperate attempt to try and hype the story by constantly referring to past events like the mothman and bigfoot. All in all I feel it set back any validity to paranormal investigations or those involved or have had strange experiences by trying to make something out of nothing. I don't watch paranormal reality (loosely used term) tv and I don't refute that it exists, but this series made it seem contrived and I guess that's what pissed me off for wasting my time on this. Skip it or watch it but ultimately you're left with "who cares".
Kingdom (2019)
A zombie period piece? Brilliant!
Just when you think you've seen every possible zombie scenario...Bam! Netflix puts every on notice (Hollywood studios and other streaming services) that they are way ahead of the game! This is possibly the best zombie series or film ever. I know, "what about TWD"? Well this series answers, "what about it". I loved TWD and respect what it did for prime time television, but "The Kingdom" is why you pay for Netflix. It is absolutely incredible, mixing gorgeous cinematography, action, political intrigue, feudal Japan (even though it's Korean made) and zombies! Netflix just keeps pushing the envelope and no matter how many mediocre originals they put out they get some right and big studios will slowly fade away (sadly) because when Netflix gets it right they really get it right! This series, that starts off with 6 episodes has another 6 waiting to be released is worth the 14 bucks a month. It's an easy binge and worthy of our time. 10 out of 10!
Altered Carbon (2018)
Dive with me...
Yes my friends just come along and dive with me. Altered Carbon is Netflix latest original series project and thank god! What the paid critics and the other, " unhappy because I'm not in the industry", is that we need and w ant more content, and not in just film and television, but in everything! Altered C. Is a sci-fi, action-packed violent fix for any lover of the genre's. Joel is a surprisingly perfect casting decision. He carries the series when the amazing effects burn you out or overwhelms you, which it does. This is not a dig but the very opposite, the creativity is off the charts! It may go a bit long but if you don't want it to end then don't complain. Netflix is churning out material for everyone and that's what we as consumers want. This series rocks! Dive Dive Dive Dive with me!
Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child (2016)
Hate to say the word "gem", it's a gem
This is an unexpected good movie! Totally surprised by Lutz's acting as well as the rest of the cast. It's well edited with some very good shots. The creatures could have been better but they were not cheesy. If you like sci fi or not you'll like this. Good action, script and pacing were very good. This was one of those low budget but the money was spent wisely "gems. Good job Aussies!
The Dark Tower (2017)
The Dark Tower needed a shot of adrenalin
I have read the Dark Tower novels(but don't stop reading). I realize it wasn't faithful to the novels and I'm totally fine with that. To really translate the novels into film would be a Netflix project. A company with budget to spare and can put it into a mini-series to do it justice because 95 minutes was ridiculous. I went in with bated breath and was actually enjoying myself. I liked the Easter egg references to Kings novels and I love me some Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey! It wasn't a tight script but leave your Steven King ego behind because it is an enjoyable film and that's why we go to movies for!
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Bring on Black Panther
Civil War should have been called the Avengers Civil War, but things would've turned out different with Thor and the Hulk. Great fighting scene of the back and then during another great fight scene we get the Black Panther! Holy cow! He owns this movie! Marvel just can't stop kicking it up. Oh we're not done yet we get a taste of our friendly...you know the rest. The kid is awesome! Culminate treachery and having to chose sides they should have come out with a second part, no Thanos or other worldly intervention just the crew going at it! Lots of fun action and new characters! Go see it!
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Is it Prometheus/Alien?
OK so going in to this film let me prepare you without spoilers that this is neither a Prometheus film (though it addresses a thing or two), and it's barely an alien film, though it does have an alien....one alien, no really, one f***ing. Did anyone see the first movie...ALIEN! That was a heckuva lot better than this. The cast was boring and not memorable at all. Do yourself a favor wait for it on demand. I gave it a six because I have mad respect for Ridley Scott.
Wonder Woman (2017)
She's a Wonder Woman and then some!
Wonder Woman is one of the best if not the best comic book adapted films ever! I said it get over it. Gal Had it is phenomenal as Princess Diana. This role was custom fit for her. I'm gonna skip all the hoopla about her being an Isreali actress and the director being a female because we already know these things and they rock! The story keeps you glued from beginning to end. Tons of action a great plot a great setting and a great cast. This is a film for all ages, ethnicity's and gender. I felt h good after seeing this because it gave you hope and a better sense of humanity. I can't believe this was a DC film, way to go DC and keep it up. I like my dark hero flick but a little humor goes a long way. This film should be a must see for everyone so parents get out there and treat your family to a great family film!
War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
More like battle
This 3rd installment of the Planet of the apes series is one of my favorites, holding a neck and neck tie with the first. This film is purely ape driven. Very little human interaction as the others which was a delight for me. The CGI is groundbreaking and that helps when so much is steeped in ape life and the decisions they all make some good some very bad. I found it very clever how the writers incorporated the tragic history of slavery in the writing and how it shaped each character. Andy Sardekis(?) is just incredible, at some point he's bound for an Oscar and Woody Harrelson does a great job as the rebel leader. It's an enjoyable film with historic and religious tones. Go see it!
Atomic Blonde (2017)
Defused Atomic Bomb
This is not , I repeat not a female John Wick! The story is cleverly set in the 80's during the eminent fall of the Berlin Wall. That means a killer soundtrack. Charlize Theron is a spy on a mission who meets up with her MI-6 partner, the awesome James McAvoy?(?) Who is the saving grace in this film. Theron is a butt-kicking spy who does most if not all her own stunts. A good supporting cast with John Goodman and the girl from the mummy remake. The movie tries to get to cute and becomes muddy and scattered. It's 15 minutes too long and not enough action. All in all it is entertaining but it ain't John Wick!
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Hey underoos!
I'm not going to beat around the bush so let's get to it. Spider-Man Homecoming was "cute". It's exactly what you take your toddlers to see and all is well. The problem is that this film was boring for the most part. I couldn't believe this was the same Spidey that kicked everyone's tail in Civil War. In this film he was clumsy to the point of ridiculous and he didn't improve much through the film til the end. Holland is a good Spider-Man but the script held him back. The saving graces were Stark, Happy, the talking suit, Aunt Mae and of course Michael Keaton. He stole the film. No way could this Spider-Man could have gone toe to toe with Keaton's Vulture. An interesting twist towards the end was so impressive no one saw that coming. Still it wasn't the Spidey I expected especially with his predecessors Tobey and Andrew. It was alright but not on par with any MCU films. 6/10. Bring on Black Panther!
Baby Driver (2017)
Nobody puts baby in the corner!
Because if you do he'll take that corner so fast your head will spin. Baby Driver is Edgar Wright's latest film and folks it could be one of his best. "Baby" is a wheel man and he is the best bar none! Ansel Elgort steals this film as Baby. Sporting his shades and donning ear buds to play his personal theme song(s) that drives him to be the best. The film has an incredible cast. Jamie Foxx,Jon Hamm and Eiza Gonzalez are a crew of thieves and leading this dysfunctional family is the great Kevin Spacey. These characters are nothing short of "monsters" and the smallest insight to there backstory that has shaped them into what they have become. This film is based on rhythm as in sound from music to gun shots to dialogue and the mannerisms of the cast are exceptional and Edgar Wright directs this gem with style and flavor. The romance angle while in most heist films are totally irrelevant and hard to pull off Ansel and Lily James could carry the film on there romance. Go see this film and use the bathroom before because you can't miss a frame of Baby Driver!
