Outsourced (2006)
Fun culture clash comedy!
This quickly became one of my favorite movies. Todd Anderson, played by Josh Hamilton, is sent to India to train his replacement when his whole department gets outsourced. Right from the beginning culture and language differences cause awkward moments and plenty of laughs. Todd is naturally not happy about the turn of events in his life, especially being sent to India and he has to reach a seemingly unattainable goal before he can return home. In the call center Asha, played by Ayesha Dharker, emerges as the best and smartest worker. The chemistry between Asha and Todd is wonderful, they are both witty and entirely believable. I loved seeing India in the background and learning about Indian traditions. The background music is sometimes exotic like the country, at least to this American. It's a fun movie and I hope to see more from Josh Hamilton and Ayesha Dharker, both unknown to me before this film.
Loving Annabelle (2006)
One of the best... destined to be a classic.
I think that most lesbians have had big crushes on female teachers. Very few of us though are as bold as Annabelle Tillman. Annabelle, the rebellious daughter of a US senator, was kicked out of a couple of schools before winding up at a Catholic girls boarding school. She becomes enamored with her attractive literature teacher Simone Bradley, played by Diane Gaidry. Both Gaidry and Erin Kelly, who plays Annabelle, deliver very believable performances. There are some great characters in this film, Father Harris the elderly priest played by Kevin McCarthy is one of my favorites. Laura Breckenridge is wonderful as Colins, a student with an anxiety disorder that cuts herself. Ilene Graff does a good job as Mother Emaculata, the director of the school, and Simone's aunt. I love this film and have watched it many times. The music is great and I sometimes play it just to listen to the music.
Waking Madison (2010)
Unpredictable drama. with twists and turns.
The film is dark and confusing for awhile, then it starts to make sense as the characters come to life. Sarah Roemer delivers a wonderful performance as Madison Walker, a young woman with a severe personality disorder caused by an overly religious, mentally ill, abusive mother. You have to pay attention because much is revealed in flashbacks. The story is unpredictable and engrossing. Elizabeth Shue plays Dr.Barnes, a psychologist who tries to help Madison. Set in New Orlean's French Quarter, the film has a spooky and surreal edge to it at times. Erin Kelly as Grace once again is enticing someone to smoke cigarettes and partake in other vices. Waking Madison is well written and acted, and is certainly worth watching once or twice.
