Utterly disappointing
11 June 2010
I liked previous Apran Sen's movies, specially the very first one - '36 Chowranghee Lane'. But in contrary to common view, it was quite disappointing. May be I was expecting too much. As I am residing in Japan for quite long, I know how improbable is this story. Also, how they two first became pen-friends remains a mystery. This movie sometimes tried to be realistic, and sometimes too dreamy. But happened to be neither serious nor entertaining. Only the cinematography looks good. Humors are also mostly did not work (for me). But its a relative thing. If anyone prefers impractical but idealistic characters in movies, they may like it. Usually reliable Rahul Bose looks very much like 'acting', hardly natural. But seems this movie has a big fan-base, so you can also give it a try.

Streer Patra (1972)

An under-rated classic
15 January 2008
First of all it is not a Hindi language movie, as it is written here. It is a Bengali movie based on Rabindranath Tagore's story with the same name. The story was written around 1915 and was way ahead of the time and naturally caused an uproar among the conservative minded people. And surprisingly it includes people like Bipin Chandra Pal. The story is about the conflict between narrow minded rich people against a woman with open and broad mind, literate and with great personality. Natually a complete misfit to this family as well as to the contemporary society. Acting is very good and sometimes look like a Ray movie. I don't know whether Purnyendu Patri made any other film than this or not, but it is of very high quality, though not popular. Worth watching it.

Just enjoy it
23 May 2007
If you look at this movie critically, you can find too many loop-holes. There is basically no story and whatever it has, is very much predictable and not exactly very practical. But if you can overlook these problems, and just try to enjoy it, you can actually. It is at least not one of those movies, that tired to be serious but failed miserably - it did not try to be one. There are some lighthearted humorous dialogs and the story never tried to be complicated. Its a typical escapist type romantic comedy. The chemistry between Uttam Kumar and Anjana Bhowmik worked well and side characters - Pahari Sanyal, Anuva Gupta and Jahar played their part adequately. Have some fun while watching and then forget may be.

Bomayier Bombete - such a disappointment
22 April 2007
I did not expect it to be like Sonar Kella or Joy Baba Felunath, but had heard that this film was somewhat popular when it was released. It was such a big disappointment! There is nothing good in it; weak script, except Sabyasachi others are like 3rd graded TV actors (especially unbearable was the Lal Mohan Ganguly, played by Bibhu Bhattacharya); very ordinary direction with an utterly poor and cheap production. Long time back I had seen some TV series based on Satyajit Ray's short-stories made by Sandeep Ray. It was OK. So had thought it would be at least have some substance. But it has none. One should avoid this awful movie by any cost, specially if he/she had seen any other Feluda movie made by late Ray. It looks like a mediocre TV series at best. Actually I have found parts of 'Baksho Rohoshyo', someone uploaded in youtube, which looks much much better than this Bombaiyer Bombete. I am really surprised how a person who had the chance to witness a director like Sr. Ray from that close can make such a poor quality movie. Its a real crap.

not half as good as I expected
28 August 2003
I am not used to watch so called meaningless Hindi movies. But I had heard about this one so much that thought it may be a really good movie. Not at all. Though I know there are too many people (specially commercial Hindi movie fans) will disagree with me, but I couldn't like it for these reasons. Its unnecessarily too long. Two thirds of this movie is simply meaningless. Blunt, stupid like humor that sometimes insults one's intelligence. Except a very few, overall pathetic acting, including Salman Khan. This is the first time I have seen his movie and I really disliked this guy. Like average Hindi movies Nisha is 'doing computer', but seen only doing dancing and singing. Same for Univ Prof or Company's managing dir etc. And of course there are many dance and song sequences, which are forcefully added like any other hindi movies. Yes, there is no violence or profanity. You can say it is a family drama in that sense. If you can forget that you are an intelligent matured person and just wanted to spend time (quite a lot actually) watching a movie, you can select this. I had to finish it in three different sittings. Luckily for me I didn't buy it, I borrowed this movie from a friend. From others' lavish comments about this movies, it seems that common Hindi movies standard is very low now. If you want to watch light-hearted good Hindi movies, I would suggest you to watch Hrishikesh Mukherjee's "Guddi" or "Golmaal". They are simple, predictable but enjoyable.
