The Beekeeper (2024)
Not worth your time
I don't understand how this movie can be the product of the director of "training days" and the writer of "equilibrium" and "law abiding citizen".
The plot is unbelievable, but ok it's an action flick, I can accept it. However the scenes, the dialogues, the acting are all so bad that it was cringe to watch.
The fight scenes are generic and nothing particularly cool about it. The protagonist for some reason can slap a hundred armed swat guys bare handed.
The copratogonist at the start of the movie is unfazed by her mother suicide and goes on to have the least believable acting I've ever seen.
Daylight's End (2016)
Watchable but you'll lose interest before it's finished.
It's on a budget and cinematography is fine. They chose a style for photography, camera work is good so you can watch this flick and not feel it low budget actually.
However, characters are one dimensional and stereotypical. You won't feel attached to any of them which in a zombie movie can be good, people die, but you won't care much neither.
The plot isn't smart, it borrows the two main ideas from two other famous movies in this genre you most certainly have already seen. It also suffer probably by some cuts that left out some scenes that might have helped understand more. Sometimes you wonder a little what's happening. The movie also doesn't offer any background on what kind of apocalypse is and what are these human creatures that drop if shot in the chest not like zombies and burn in daylight like vampires. ???.
All in all there's a lot of good action and we don't need a lot of plot to make a watchable genre's movie, but bad characters and boring although scarce dialogues make this movie a little uninteresting and 20 minutes too long.
Elysium (2013)
good action flick, not a significant movie.
I'm a little disappointed by Elysium because I thought Blomkamp had more to say, coming from District 9. I imagined it would have been repetitive but still interesting if he kept exploring the segregation and racism theme in a sci-fi movie. Instead Elysium follows the blockbuster road with a plot already seen in many, many action movies. I won't reveal anything but you'll easily recognize similarities. Kind of a shame given the talent of Blomkamp. Not much to say on the acting, Matt Damon and Jodie Foster were flawless as usual and everyone else was fine too, but there wasn't any space for characters development, so no Oscars here.
However, when you make peace with the fact that this is just an action movie you're actually in for a treat. The camera work is outstanding, there are a couple of new ideas very well implemented that really gets you excited about the fight scenes even if you're slammed on the sofa eating cookies like I was. The android technology shown and created for this future era is also brilliant and it's where Blomkamp always shines.
So I advise to watch it because it's quite entertaining, but don't expect anything else then a couple of hours of Matt Damon fighting in a prosthetic android skeleton.
