Path to War (2002)
Great cast, direction and script
Brilliant film. I was surprised to find it was made for television. It seems the quality of work for TV can be more bold and impressive than what theatrical runs can dare in the 20th century. This film is a great example of talent finding the audience. HBO and Frankenheimer were a great team in this production.
The Harder They Come (1972)
An intimate look at the clockwork of fascism
Made on a shoestring, Perry Hentel brought the gritty, hardscrabble life of the Jamaican poor to the world. Although Roger Corman brought this film to an American audience, it took a year and the midnight show audience to appreciate the film's music and brilliant tell of a Jamaican folk hero's tale.
This film was the gateway for Eric Clapton's huge hit of Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" to come through. Made with a shoestring budget, the production quality is striking in it's brilliant framing and editing. The script is excellent in plot movement and laying out the political and economic subtext that architect's the choices and framework of the protagonist's motivations and actions.
I saw the original release and have gone back to see the studio scene where Cliff records his hit song many times. Great song, performance and filmwork.
Just saw again in a long while and couldn't take my eyes off the screen. A classic!
Henzel couldn't find financing for his second film for over THIRTY years. What a tragedy.
Young Cassidy (1965)
Rod Taylor's opus
A film full of great performances and harsh editing. Truly enjoyable with great chemistry between the two primary leads of Maggie Smith and Rod Taylor, but also many great supporting performances. Great cinematography and settings, this should have been 30 minutes longer for the material to breathe and give clearer exposition.
Still, I found this to be great cinema and an enlightening view into the art arising from the Irish rebellion.
The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
Metaphor for delusion and obsession in 2021
Prescient work that illuminates the result of obsessive beliefs and the conclusion of ill-founded explanations for mis-fortune.
The Flight Attendant (2020)
Hilarious!
Kaley Cusco's performance is incredible. Immensely watchable show. Great cast and direction. Editing is fast and storyline is too.
Finally a show to fill the gap that The Americans left in its wake!
Great production of the serial TV idiom.
Raised by Wolves (2020)
Review ratings at ONE are better than the show!
After a half hour of episode one, I dug in the ones to see if the reviewers here were helpful in confirming my reaction. OMG I laughed in delight at the funny and on-target comments here. The reviewers at one to each one are sharper than the writers of this travesty of Sci-Fi. Truly implausible even for fantasy, as one hilarious review stated.
The Man Who Would Be King (1975)
Epic
Twenty-five years of John Huston trying to find a way to get his beloved tale from Kipling led him to the immortal Sean Connery and Michael Caine. Good thing, as I cannot see Clark Gable, his original cast choice early on, bringing the performance that Connery delivered with Caine. Their chemistry and skill is evident throughout.
Great cast, script, settings, cinematography and especially direction give this film a roadshow feel and scope that surpasses so many lesser works of that period. The depth of the films grasp of human nature and its themes are mythic in a Greek tradition of storytelling.
One of the great cinema masterpieces.
Romeo and Juliet (1954)
Ill-cast and mis-directed
A poorly edited screenplay; terrible transitions; mistaken lead casting; stilted, leaden direction - oh let me count the ways this director let down his good supporting characters with a film that's well dressed and no date to show at the ball. The worst presentation of Shakespeare I've seen in a decade of so many films with poor respect for film (the 50's.....) and a preoccupation with imperial propaganda.
Kush (2013)
Powerful and brilliant short
Great performances and direction. Intimate cinematography creates a very personal understanding of the impact of religious persecution. A must see! It will give perspective and sympathy for anyone but the cold-hearted of the value of true human liberty.
C'est du caviar (2015)
Brilliant!
So well done! Great direction and editing! The performances to a one are all excellent!!
So much talent is evident in this delightful short.
Sarah Lelouch has a great feel for comedy and storytelling. The dialogue, even in subtitle, was perfect and so well dra2n out. Pacing was really smart.
The Odds (2009)
Brilliant!
An acting class, beautiful one act, one scene play. This is the best example of what a short film can be.
