World War Z (2013)
Do yourself a favor and read the book.
Do yourself a favor and read the book. IT's an easy read. Just a collection of amazing and gruesome short stories.
This movie is entertaining and an okay watch if you're just looking for a simple Zombie movie.
The fast zombie's aren't what Max Brook's intended, if the writers for the screenplay or producers took the time to go to a reading, they'd know that Brooks wrote the short stories with George A. Romero Zombies in mind.
This movie could have been amazing if they did a "Crash" 2004 style movie where they plucked 3-4 stories from the book and had them intersect in some meaningful way. Especially the Cannibal and cold north stories.
Maybe if they do a sequel or a remake or turn it into an amazing HBO series, they'd do it some Justice.
In conclusion, Max Brooks said when this movie was announced that he didn't care what they wanted to do with it, he knew that it would no longer be his story and that was fine because the check they cut him was cozy. So watch it, don't watch it but definitely read the book.
The Sky Is Everywhere (2022)
Aesthetically pleasing, amazing pace and heartbreaking.
I love how real the sisters feel and how messy decisions can be. The lead actor is super realistic as a person copping with loss and I can't help but feel for her, even when her decisions are a bit dodgy.
The playfulness of the artistic direction is adorable and that scene in the woods where they listen to music together and the flower people push them together is visually beautiful. There are a lot of cool practical effects that can be campy at times, but with the heaviness of the story feels necessary and can be lifting in the best way possible.
Superman (1978)
The humor is unnecessary and awful.
I've seen this movie a dozen times and I think there are parts of it that are great but overall, the Lex Luther comedy crew is an unwanted dynamic. It's like they tried to pepper in elements of the William Dozier Batman show instead of just allowing it to be its own thing. Also, the casting for teenage Superman is jarring.
A Quiet Place Part II (2020)
It is not often that a sequel can be better than the first, especially when you loved the first film.
It is rare to get a sequel to live up to the first film but I've seen it done.
Titles like Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Aliens, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and so on sometimes depend on the budget or the writing, though often times it is the combination of both that allows the expansion of the world to bleed flawlessly into the pages of a screenplay that allows it to burn into images of a dystopian world that feels larger than life.
I felt like this was more of a continuation to the first film but also told in such a new way that felt familiar. The Team up with Cillian Murphy and Millicent Simmonds felt like Joel and Elle from the Last of Us, or Hugh Jackman and Dafne Keen from Logan. It's a pairing that is rarely used in cinema that was refreshing to see, especially in a cinematic universe like this.
The movie ends on a hopeful note and to be honest, left me wanting more. I felt it necessary to at least get an epilogue at the end, though the lack of one gives me hope that there could be room for a third installment.
It was definitely worth seeing on the big screen and I hope that anyone reading this review enjoys the film as much as I did.
The Mitchells vs the Machines (2021)
Netflix just stepped their game up.
I wasn't expecting a cinematic movie on a streaming platform. This movie was grade a from beginning to end. I loved the cast and the thing that really drove it was the father and daughter moments. It didn't feel written in at the last minute, it was used as a story arc and successfully so.
I would have chosen an actual kid for the youngest Mitchell child, but I got what they were going for.
The Iron Giant (1999)
Cult Classic
I've seen this movie a billion times, and now that I have kids, I get to watch it a billion more. Love it.
Minari (2020)
Definitely a movie for anyone with immigrant parents. I sobbed
My dad is from mexico and my mom is a latina from California, her side of the family is whitewashed and when I was 10, my grandma from my dads side came to visit us and we were so mean to her. She died before I was able to appreciate her and our culture.
