The Gentlemen (2024)
Thoroughly enjoyable series.
Time well spent, pure first class entertainment sprinkled about with Guy Ritchie's special touch. You will find cleverly thought out characters, great actors, beautiful settings and a very good story. Fun, comedic, yet dark in a way that manages to not generate heavy or negative emotions from the viewer. I love a morally ambiguous character that I can root for.
Considering it's Netflix putting it out, it might just be in that minority of shows that are actually so high quality that anyone, regardless of their usual preferences, can enjoy. I was a fan of the 2019 movie, and while that did not disappoint, the story in this series, is quite a bit more complex and developed, though it it easy to follow. Be on the lookout for a few easter eggs in tribute to another great series.
If you want to relax and entertain yourself look no further.
Cobra Kai (2018)
Truly inspiring - many lessons to be learned from this show.
I very rarely write reviews but I felt I had to on this one so here it goes:
I hope it's not just my nostalgia speaking but this show is absolutely worth watching even if you're too young to remember the original Karate Kid. The story is amazingly written, this show is one of the few that manages to create true suspense, and has you rooting for all the characters, none of which are perfect, they all have flaws and strengths, that are amazingly portrayed by the actors. It will take you on an emotional roller coaster ride, the wholesome kind, and you will be better for it.
Even if you watch it for nostalgia, for the timeless life lessons it dishes out, for the action or the ageless story of rivalry you can't go wrong with this one. Both young and mature audiences will enjoy this show, and learn from it. It has the same brand of wisdom and life advice dished out in the original movies, by the late Pat Morita's character, Mr. Miyagi, one that you come to realize, understand and hopefully take to heart, not one that is overtly and evidently told or shown to you. This is the way to truly make your audience connect with the show and the writers have done a stellar job of it.
I have no reservations on giving this show a 10/10. Enjoy!
The Comeback Trail (2020)
Fun comedy!
This is a really fun, tongue in cheek movie, it doesn't take itself seriously, it has a sense of humor. Plenty of laugh out loud moments, and will keep you smiling most of the time. Great performances by all the actors involved. Solid comedy, don't take the bad reviews seriously, they didn't really get this movie.
The Lost Pirate Kingdom (2021)
Arrrrghhh me hearties!
Ahoy mateys! Not sure how historically accurate this series is, but it's a really fun one in a niche area of TV, PIRATES! The cinematography is nice and I'm a sucker for narration, I noticed some reviewers didn't quite like it but it's a nice throwback. It presents itself as documentary film with historians presenting their viewpoints along the way. What people don't understand is that even "historical" records of pirates are somewhat based on hearsay and legend, so don't take everything seriously this is meant to entertain first and foremost. In my humble opinion it does exactly this, and does it well, it's light, enjoyable and refreshingly different.
The Expanse (2015)
The next cult classic.
I've never written a review but being a Sci Fi fan, I felt I must encourage people to give this show a try. It is bar none, ladies and gentlemen the best Sci Fi show on TV at the time of me writing this. Season 1 gradually builds up, the sense of mystery will keep you on the edge, the actors get better as the show progresses and the story develops nicely. All in all, from the cinematography to the effects, to the story and acting, everything on this show is top notch, and I have a feeling season 2 will be even better. If they keep up the wonderful work they've been doing, this series will be the next Sci Fi cult classic. Enjoy!
Avenue 5 (2020)
Subtle humor, not for everyone but good!
This series features a lot of absurd subtle humor, sometimes not outright but the situations in which the characters find themselves are. It's definitely not for everyone but it is a fun series to watch. Great sets, actors and so on. This rating does not do it justice, people who rated it low probably didn't understand the subtleties and didn't enjoy it.
Project Blue Book (2019)
A solid series
It keeps you on the edge of your seat, it is beautiful to look at and well acted, absolutely solid entertainment. If you're here for historical facts, I'm sorry but you'll be disappointed, however that is not a reason to rate this series low. It's meant to entertain not educate, rate accordingly!
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (2012)
A masterpiece? I think not!
Standards today must truly have hit rock bottom if this show is to be considered a masterpiece or the best mystery series on TV.
It is poorly written, acting is below average for TV, and even the 1920's decor and backdrop isn't really that well thought out.
I started watching with high expectations only to be greeted by a weak plot, an even weaker dialog, predictable and boring outcomes, a nasty main character who has no consideration for other people, and is as unrealistic for the 1920's as it can get even in the context of a modern liberated woman of the era or even of more recent ones.
This show thinks its viewers are just as dim as its creators and apparently judging from the reviews... they are not far off. A show made to tick boxes and pat itself on the back, with no substance and no value.
Jett (2019)
Very entertaining show.
It may not be the deepest most intellectual series, but it is definitely entertaining. Beautiful cinematography, a noir vibe and amazing actors. It definitely deserves a higher rating than this, it's a fun show so far. Honestly I'm hooked and looking forward to the rest of the episodes!
Mortal Engines (2018)
Niche Scifi
This is a very entertaining movie, if you're into Steampunk and/or SciFi you will forgive it its small shortcomings. The premises of the movie, the world, the special effects and its actors are top notch. Towards the end it gets a little bit cliche but this is a solid movie, definitely deserves a higher rating than it currently has.
If you want to entertain yourself, go see it, it's worth the 2 hours of your life and I can guarantee you've not seen such an original idea in a film for quite a while.
Strike (2017)
Good noir-ish thriller.
If you like detective stories with a noir twist this one's for you. Well written, and very well acted, it will definitely make you curious about the end. I like the fact it's just three hours worth of story not drawn out over many episodes, helps if you want to watch it in one night without it feeling like a binge.
Dark Matter (2015)
Criminally underrated show!
Season 3 has been the best yet, if you're just starting to watch it, you need a little bit of patience, but I promise it will be well worth it. Season 3 has been exceptional so far, the actors have really gotten accustomed to their roles and there's definitely chemistry between them. They have progressed along with the show which just keeps getting better and better. It is one the best SciFi shows on TV right now. It currently has a 7.5 rating, and in my opinion it should be rated a solid 8.5. The story also has a lot more depth now, it is very enjoyable to follow. Don't discard it as just another space opera!
