The Big Bang Theory: The Matrimonial Momentum (2015)
Please walk gently into the good night
Wow! how could a show which gave us so many laughs fall to this level. When Leonard and Penny get to finally marry, the show turns gut wrenchingly dull. The cheesy science filled vows Leonard delivers just made me facepalm, the situations are no longer funny.
You know Amy suggested a break at the finale last season, but Sheldon moping over her? Seriously? The seemingly great scientific mind ultimately cries over a girl, is this where you wanted to go?
Now that Leonard is settling down with Penny, I was happy we no longer need to hear him whine about Penny and now they have brought Sheldon to that level. Good going folks - run another 8 seasons till ShAmy gets married.
Absolutely no comic relief in this episode, just lot of really awkward scenes. I think it's time for TBBT to go gently into the good night while we still have some good memories.
Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
C'mon,i thought we did away with this genre after spy kids...
I expected so much much from the actors (Colin Firth, Nick Fury, Alfred, Luke Skywalker), you have got to set certain standards. I would say Colin Firth came out on top from the big four with a class act and others were pathetically under-utilized (point one). You see Bond - style introductions to everyone and then the movie deteriorates to a cross between Austin Powers and Spy Kids.
If you enjoy some violence though, you will get your money's worth, sickening killing scenes in there. I enjoyed some of the action sequences and hence the 5/10. The film was awful - the script was crazy and oft-seen to the point of being so predictable. The character eggsy is a classic Karate Kid role and a stupid kid turns out a great warrior at the end, you should be a movie virgin to not see that coming!
Samuel Jackson as the bad guy is so dumb and he might as well be sucking on a lollipop through the movie, that's how stupid his character seems. Michael Caine has so much less screen time than in first half hour of Nolan movies but then refer point one. Mark Hamill should have been drunk when he accepted the cameo and you feel sorry for Samuel Jackson to be a part of this movie. If you wanna watch, have very low expectations and you might just scrape through.
In the same genre, have you seen this series "The Middleman (2008)" - I strongly suggest you do, only a handful of people have seen it before it got cancelled. It is an excellent example of how good this movie could have been..
Piku (2015)
Don't know about constipation but it cured me of insomnia!
Thanks to some good acting, I slept for only an hour out of the 2 hrs of this excruciatingly slow movie.
Like Amitabh was suffering from lack of bowel movement, I was suffering from insomnia the past 3 weeks. This movie cured it, go for it if you are too - you won't be disappointed. My mom was the one who wanted to see it and she said I was snoring, thank you Piku!
Leaving my problems aside, Amitabh's role is very hard to define. He says in one scene that he needs women to have a purpose and goal in life and not just serve their partners throughout their married life. The very next, he throws tantrums and makes everyone, especially his daughter, Piku played by DP, constantly pay attention to him.
Agreed that older people behave like kids but his role was too cinematic to make you love him.DP and Irrfan acted really well, so did the irritating mausi. I would say, wait till the DVD release if you wanna absolutely watch it - not worth a visit to the theater.
The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Very good in its own way
I should really start with commending the fine job that Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep pulled off. The former is a wannabe writer who applies for a job and doesn't even know that she's got the devil in her boss. Andy (Anne) gets to be an assistant to the high flying Miranda (Streep), Editor of the fashion magazine, "Runway", a role that no one could have done more justice to than Streep herself. You would in no instance doubt the power wielded by Ms.Streep in her role as Miranda.
I haven't read the book so I wouldn't know how truly the movie sticks to it, but then I don't think David Frankel could have really done anything different to make the movie finer. The plot of the movie is really simple - How Andy tackles all the challenges that entail her job, and how many challenges she really puts up with before getting frustrated. We have all been in a similar position in our lives, when we just couldn't say "No" to our boss. Miranda gives Andy a bucket load of tasks right through the day and sometimes even late into the night, just when she's hanging out her gang of friends which includes her live-in boyfriend. Andy feels suffocated and out of place with all her lack of interest in the fashion world, it's just a job in her run up to becoming a writer. She just keeps reminding herself that she doesn't wanna tip over and be just another assistant to Miranda who got fired but show her mettle. She gets resistance in the form of Emily Blunt, first assistant to Miranda who does a neat job of showcasing in certain instances how badly she wants Andy to fail.
You do end up feeling sorry for all the characters caught up in the corporate humdrum of meaningless jobs and how much personal disconnect has crept into our lives. The movie does have a lot of funny moments to make you laugh and picks your interest to watch the relationships change on screen. Whether Andy sucks up to Miranda, learns fashion sense and puts her personal relationships on the line or just calls it quits and chooses life over work makes up for the evolution of the story. All in all, an enjoyable watch for a Sunday afternoon!
