House of the Dragon (2022)
10 out of 10?! Really??
People rating this a 10 are either bots, paid, or fan boys desperately wanting this show to be something it isn't. A 10 would mean perfect writing. Perfect acting. Perfect cinematography. Perfect everything. This flawed, boring snooze-fest is anything but perfect. It's flat out boring. I feel as though I'm watching a soap opera set in the Middle Ages.
Give us some action. Give us interesting characters. Give us a damn story that's worthy of following. 3 episodes in and it's a 6 at best. I'll give it a couple of more episodes before completely giving up on it. Not sure why they chose this particular story line from GoT to revolve an entire series around. Should've chosen something more interesting like the White Walkers and their origin story with the Children.
Devil in Ohio (2022)
Interesting Plot, Doesn't Deliver
Saw the preview and read the plot line and thought it would be interesting. It isn't. It appeared to be a crime thriller. But instead of "True Detective" it centered around family drama and teen angst. Yawn. That's fine for network TV but for Netflix you want something with more of an edge and not milque-toast. Around 15 minutes into the episode I was bored and didn't see that there was anything that would try to save it. I finished the episode, but I doubt I'll return for the 2nd or future episodes.
As for the writing? Boring and cliche. We've seen children talk and behave the exact same way countless times. Add to that, the children are bad actors. Of course I might be biased because I usually find child actors cringeworthy. In this case, though, they are not helped at all by clumsy, cliche'd, predictable writing.
The writing for the adults is much the same. The out of town sheriff looks and acts about like you'd expect him to if you were watching a B movie. The acting, again is hard to determine because they don't have much to work with.
The cinematography looks like something you'd see on network TV. Again, just meh.
Don't waste your time, as I did, on this cringeworthy, snooze fest.
Succession (2018)
Couldn't get into it
I tried to watch this after hearing others say they liked it, but just couldn't get into it. I usually will give a show 3 episodes before quitting, but I gave up halfway through the third episode. I didn't like any of the characters. Usually there's at least one you love to hate but there wasn't even that. I wanted to like the Kieran Culkin character but the writing for him was so cliche that the attempts at making him appear to be witty failed. I was simply bored with it and nothing compelled me to continue watching it.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Meh
Had a hard time deciding what to score this. On the one hand, the acting and cinematography were good. Well-above average actually. If not for the strength of those two aspects I would've rated it a 3 or 4. What drug it down for me is it was really, really slow. And the endless monologues.....on a couple of them I actually fast-forwarded. They were painful to watch, especially when you see the person the monologue is directed to is just awkwardly sitting there, staring blankly and nodding for 10-15 minutes. There just wasn't enough happening for my tastes to move the story along.
Then there are the plot holes and the unbelievable actions of some of the characters. I just couldn't make myself rate this any higher. It's worth a watch because I feel it appealed to a lot of people, but I wouldn't highly recommend. I think all the scores of 1 or 10 are two far to the extreme in both directions. It had a lot of potential, but the pacing made it fall flat.
Outlaw King (2018)
Just simply not good
This story has all the makings of a great movie. However, this movie was an injustice to said story. The writing was not very good. The pace was atrocious. And the story was crammed into 2 hours when it should've been comprised of multiple episodes. It felt rushed like it was racing to see how soon it could get to the end...which wasn't really an ending and left much of the story of Robert the Bruce left untold. It seemingly jumped rapidly from one scene to the next, sacrificing any connection a viewer could have with the characters. Watching, I didn't really care if Robert succeeded or not. The movie didn't connect me to him. I didn't care about the relationship with his daughter. I didn't care about the relationship he had with his wife. They were distant acquaintances one moment. She said something Talia Shire-ish (Win, Rocky. Win.) and then they have sex a few scenes later and are separated until the end of the movie. There was nothing in the movie that showed she was an integral part of his life really. So, no character development. No connectivity with the characters. Rushed pacing. Shallow story telling. There was some good cinematography and some of the battle scene was ok. This was just a huge disappointment overall.
Fresh Off the Boat (2015)
Slow, unfunny "comedy"
Had hopes of liking the show, but couldn't get through the second episode and found myself searching for entertainment on YouTube instead. It was just...slow. No sense of pace and the humor, to me, wasn't humorous. I didn't chuckle a single time and don't think I even smiled.
The mother is annoying. The oldest son is unlikeable and annoying. The other two children may as well be non-existent and serve as filler for the most part. The dad isn't bad...but he isn't funny either.
All the white people are either idiots or bad people and overly exaggerated to one extreme or the other. The show would do better to poke fun of itself somewhat, a la most other successful comedies, instead of relying on putting down everyone else.
Maybe it will improve, but may lose it's audience, other than those who are Asian, before it gets that chance.
