A tepid thriller that muddles for too long
16 July 2022
Boring. It was trippy and pretty to watch, but it took way too long to get to the point. I'm so thankful I didn't waste my time going to see this in theaters. It was dumb.

It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't amazing either
31 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The motivation behind the entire plot, "We have to help them," was way too thin to be believable. I actually liked the idea of bringing the different versions of Spider-Man together and it was one of my favorite parts of the movie, but otherwise it just dragged. For how thin the motivation driving the plot and how long the movie was, I was bored. Too many long meaningful looks with dramatic music. It was disappointing considering all the ten stars. You can miss it and still see Doctor Strange 2 without needing to watch it.

Locke & Key (2020–2022)

Dragged out
23 October 2021
The main problem with Locke & Key is how far they stretch the basics of the story. There's so much going on in the comics and yes- I wish the story was darker and more like the original story, but Things change in adaptations and I'm fine with that. They just draaaaaaaaaaged out the story so much. Even the scenes that are "supposed" to be tense I'm fast forwarding through. They pack no punch. It just lacks any suspense and fear. I'm still watching it but it's def a background noise show where I'm not missing anything by playing on my phone.

Funny and not purposefully like everyone else says
29 September 2021
It was so dumb. Super obvious what the "twist" was. And the scary reveal was hilarious. My group laughed and we all thought it was dumb.

Annoying
14 February 2021
This one got on my nerves. Molly was overbearing, but her sister and the fiancé were stupid. They gripes about so many things they agreed to and knew were going to happen. Like how they reluctantly agreed to be filmed as part of an entire wedding being paid for, but then were upset about the videos being online later on. That's childish and a plot device to put more blame on Molly for taking over. Just irritating, shallow characters and lazy writing all around.

A beautiful mix of sci-fi, racism, loss and triumph
6 November 2020
Truly Incredible storytelling. I didn't come in with any expectations, except maybe some weird monsters with the Lovecraft connection. The stories flow well together in to a narrative on race and history that was sometimes difficult to see from a white perspective. But the stories of tribulation and horror were a perfect medium for the story of a Black family tangled up with dark magic and powerful white men who want to use that family for their own gain.

I also appreciated the female perspective in this show, women being punted to the side so the men could make decision. These women took back their power and their voices and it was phenomenal to watch.

I'm sure plenty have said more better than I could, but damn Lovecraft Country was an incredible ride. Emotional, intense, action-packed, frightening, beautiful and full of love. I loved every minute of it and hope there will be a season 2.

A December Bride (2016 TV Movie)

I liked it but I would've preferred some ppl on the naughty kisg
20 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is cute, but if your cousin stole your fiancé, especially if you were close to this cousin, you would not go their fricken wedding. That biatch stole your man & I don't care how much you wouldn't want to disappoint your Aunt/mother figure that's too saccharine. The worst part is how self righteous the cousin is! Like I didn't do anything wrong blah blah blah. Take some responsibility Ho ho ho.

The main couple, Layla and Seth, have good chemistry and the story of Layla falling in love but also taking control of her future is perfect. If only they didn't try to paint cheating in that nice light.

So Boring!
2 May 2020
I'm sad to write this because I really looked forward to this after so long, but the crypt of tears was so boring. It was def a disservice to the series after so long and I tried to watch it, but I never cared about what was happening. The characters felt odd, the pacing was odd and I was pretty disappointed.

Nancy Drew (2019–2023)
8/10
Coming from a Nancy Drew reader- Still liked it
15 October 2019
Nancy Drew was fun! It's twisty and I Iove the supernatural references. There were also plenty of references to how the show was going to be in the trailer and lead up to the premiere, so I don't get all the "shock" at how Nancy is being modernized. Nancy Drew was waaaaay better than the cheesy Charmed premiere.

Nancy's fighting with her Dad won't go on forever, and it's also built on a dynamic I think many parents and kids of cancer victims would find familiar. Cancer is a horrible deterioration of someone you love and it takes a different toll on both their spouse and kids.

The ghosts are unique. I love how everyone has secrets and It's pretty spot on for small town life. I'm excited to see where it goes and what secrets come to life. There are definite shades of Secrets of Shadow Ranch, modernized when it shakes out.

Interesting but ultimately dissatisfying
5 April 2019
I'm not going to go in to too much detail, suffice to say I wasn't as entertained as I wanted to be. I wasn't frightened and I saw the twist coming a mile away. The themes explored were interesting, but it just fell flat and weird with conveniences and inconsistencies to further the plot the along without satisfying explanation. Meh.

Tried to be amusing but should've been more serious
19 October 2018
Lots of negative reviews, but after watching for myself I can see why. The writers tried to capture the mix of magic & humor that the original had, the quips and one liners mixed with danger etc. It didn't work and really came across as juvenile and a bit slapstick without going for it. I won't watch anymore.

Suicide Squad (2016)
5/10
Solid 5-6 but lots of premise wasted
13 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
It wasn't awful, but I had quite a few issues with this film. The top two things that bothered me were the lack of things the trailer promised while disappointing you on the things it did deliver on. For example: All the funny lines in the trailer are the *only* funny lines in the movie-so you've already heard them and they aren't funny anymore, on the other hand you don't get any of the cool scenes with the joker that you were expecting because they aren't there. SO essentially you get lines that were overused with no new material and then the stuff you wanted to see more of, you don't. I hate when all the funny parts are in the trailer- especially with the funny/action tone of this franchise- it feels like a waste of money and a letdown that the writers had that little creativity to spread around.

Second: Harley Quinn was such a disappointment. Her performance was lauded, but another major letdown. I'm actually embarrassed for Margot Robbie since her job was really just to have her ass out and look pretty. She was useless to the plot and it would've been great to see her and the joker's backstory expanded a bit more than bare dialogue flashbacks that don't give you any reason to care about her character.

I wasn't too enthused about the Joker's new look, but Leto pulled it off fantastically. He was great. Even with the ridiculously small amount of screen time he had (and really if this was about suicide squad why not leave him out of it and let him have his own film with Harley? There was really that little point to the scenes he had and was in) Jared Leto was the best part of the movie.

Another gripe- the plot was messy and characters underdeveloped. You don't really buy in to them being bad guys because the amount of time fleshing out the characters is dismal. And making Waller a harda** didn't disguise that. The idea of making her worse than the so- called bad guys was a mistake. Why wouldn't she just call Batman for help with whatever the f*ck was going on? Duh. There should've been exposition of the characters backstories to feed in to why suicide squad was specifically needed against Enchantress. The plot problems really pulled it apart. And being the introduction to a new franchise, the setup is really important here to get the audience on board- not only comic readers, but new fans. They failed. I really feel like it was Ayer's direction too- since he's stated that this was his "director's cut." Ayer being proud of this mess is really damn sad.

I went in to this with my husband saying everyone gave it a solid seven. To me that's an average score and this was not a little worse than average. A solid 5, but no more. The waste of potential is too big, not to mention you'd think the studio would've been more involved in screening the 'director's cut' before release after the bomb that was Batman vs Superman. I hope they can pull DC back together. Sad panda on this one.

Great Dracula Origin Tale
19 October 2014
Many of Dracula's recent retellings lean heavily to one of the aspects of his tale- love, horror, history, etc. Not Dracula Untold. I really enjoyed that this film felt so well balanced in that all of the those elements were compiled so well together. Dracula was in love but it wasn't the only driving force in the whole film, which was refreshing and there was action and blood but not too much. It was just overall, very well done. I was honestly sort of expecting that "trying too hard to be cool/sci-fi" like Underworld, but I was happily surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Sophisticated Dracula for the Modern~ Definitely go see it in theaters. It's worth the ticket price.

Intruders (2014)

Definitely gotten better
28 September 2014
Intruders took a little while to unfold, but it was worth giving the patience of the first couple of episodes. It's very enigmatic, in a most intriguing sort of way. I'm enjoying it immensely. I'm surprised by the low ratings, but I could see how some people wouldn't want to stick with it. It has currents of darkness and violence. And there are some graphic scenes with a child that could be off putting for some. Since I love American Horror Story, this is really nothing in that league. Anyway, color me compelled and along for the ride to see the mysteries unfold. You have to stick through the first two to three episodes, but I find that to be true with premiere shows anyway as there is a great deal of background to be told. Patience folks...it's worth it.

Hemlock Grove (2013–2015)
Mysterious, spooky and Awesome!
19 April 2013
I'm not really in to making comparisons but this show sort of feels like Carnivale the way it's unfolding and telling you it's visual tale. There is some carnage, but it isn't as brutal as you would expect coming from Roth. Mostly it feels wonderfully strange, like a world you can't help but feel drawn in to. I've only watched the pilot so far, but I love that all the episodes are right there, one right after the next for immediate consumption! That is awesome. There is much going on below the surface and I can't wait to see how it unfolds. It's definitely a show worth watching. I'm looking forward to hopefully a second season, and more Netflix originals!

Munsters for the 21st Century!
27 October 2012
I really Loved it! It was fantastic. There were nods to the original series that were great and it was funny! Jerry O'Connell was a fantastic Herman, being a big softie monster. The actors had awesome family chemistry together and the special effects were stunning. I really loved the 'charming monsters' and All the actors did a great job of embodying their characters. To me the special just played pitch perfect, hitting all the right notes to capture the spirit of the original while still standing well on it's own as a new and unique show. Strong plot, humorous quips and beautiful special effects! Please pick this up NBC!!

Loving it so Far
23 October 2012
Some people are panning this because it's based on the 80s version. I've never seen the 80s version and I'm sure there are differences, but it's like the book vs the movie...it's not going to be the exact same show. This is the CW, a network with The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural. This isn't Homeland and it's not going to win an Emmy, but f you go in to it with an open mind and let it stand on it's own, it definitely delivers. The two leads have great chemistry and yes the 'beast' is a hottie, but he morphs in to a Beast in anger. He looks the part, he saves the girl and they work together with romance brewing between them. He can't have human contact and she doesn't recoil from him. The cop part of the show is also pretty good (I say pretty good, because I'm not a huge cop-show fan) and it's interwoven well with their interactions. Give it a shot. I didn't think I was going to like it, after last year's Secret Circle, but I do. Do yourself a favor and don't listen to the cynics who want a complete rehash of the original. Great!

Jane Eyre (2011)

Overall Bland
28 November 2011
I am a huge fan of the Ruth Wilson/Toby Stephens version. I had high hopes for this one, but it just never really took off. The whole movie felt underwhelming. Mia's role as Jane was underperformed. There was hardly any passion or conviction in her confession of love to Rochester. I just didn't believe the two really cared about each other. It felt forced and almost like the acting was toned down on purpose. The only scene you could feel a glimmer of romance was after the fire in Rochester's bedroom, where he takes her hand. It was alright, but I expect better than an overly done try at purely poetic. It just felt forced and not well done.
