Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
RPG Cutscenes
Rebel Moon is like watching a movie made up entirely of RPG cutscenes. It's essentially a science fiction "Magnificent 7" that spends 3/4 of its runtime putting a team together (which it hardly uses) and world building through exhibition dumps.
The action in the middle of the movie is spent introducing characters and doesn't build tension. In fact, when the twist ending completely derails the narrative (it's telegraphed, but still a fun idea) there hasn't been much development at all.
This review sounds pretty harsh. It is a bad start, rushed and incomplete, with goofy dialogue and structure, but it feels like there's genuinely something here. The sequel will be better... if they decide to make it. Netflix dropped $166 million on exhibition. Let's hope they don't waste it.
The Sandman (2022)
Great show! Ready for Season Two.
The Sandman is a dark, atmospheric fantasy that feels very much like Neil Gaiman. The storytelling moves in arcs, taking its time on subplots, rather than being driven episode to episode by a single problem. The pacing can be slow at times, but it isn't plodding. The characters are wonderfully realized, which is impressive considering that many have significantly less screen time than I was expecting. Lucifer and Death, for example, make lasting impressions.
As far as the criticisms levied against the show for portraying the existence of homosexuals and such... You've already seen far greater drama queens reading through the user reviews here on IMDb than you'll find depicted in The Sandman, and one of the characters dances to show tunes in drag.
The Outpost (2018)
Okay show. Horrible pilot.
The pilot episode was god awful and will test your willpower. It was easily one of the worst things I've ever seen. The show itself-once you get into it-is fine. It's fairly standard fantasy, swords and sorcery type stuff with plenty of face palmable moments, but I'm still watching it and I enjoy it.
Blackhat (2015)
This movie needs more love,
I'm genuinely baffled by the 5.5 rating. This movie is far better than critics are making it out to be. Anyone who would give this movie, or any movie, a ONE star rating is a pretty miserable person. Blackhat was a solid flick, as explained by others in some of the more positive reviews, and was sleek and beautifully shot. Michael Mann knows his business. It's not as good as Heat by any means (not much is), but don't be discouraged by all these negative reviews. Blackhat is a fairly typical Mann film. If you're a fan of the director you won't be disappointed. Plus they filmed in Hong Kong, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur. How freaking cool is that?
