The Beekeeper (2024)
Good enough one time watch
If you're looking for some Criterion Collection groundbreaking cinema or even something comparable to any of the Scorsese action types classics then I'm sorry you're in for a very disappointing experience. But if you're an action movie kinda guy or gal who loves Jason Statham then this movie is an entertaining and good one time watch. Please go in with realistic expectations and don't expect anything ground breaking.
I only give it a 6/10 because even for me as a long time JS fan, some of the action sequences and scenarios felt laughably over the top and a "bit much". I mean come on Jason you can do better. Don't take your audience and fans for granted and don't treat them as simple minded idiots. We love your movies but you're showing one guy take down an entire SWAT team? Come on man!! Be a bit real if not too real.
That said I still recommend this movie cuz it's entertaining and a good way to kill 1:45 and feel like a manly man or an action Jane and come out satisfied seeing right prevail over wrong and a good winning over evil.
Liked the movie but I'd recommend JS to tone down the over the top superhero level abilities of the hero and go for something a bit more "realistic".
Hot Fuzz (2007)
A cult following for no apparent reason
I felt like I lost 2+ hours of my life that I'll never get back. What an absolutely nonsense movie that just burned my brain cells. The comedy was so simplistic that it would appeal to perhaps drunk fratboys high on hours of weed smoking watching this movie while binging on pizza. The writing was pathetically bad and the action was so in your face gory and the whole movie felt like a 2 hour long epileptic seizure. The kicker is that on every forum there'll be these "oh you just don't get this kinda humor" high priests of Edgar Wright Cornetto aficionados who'll make it seem like you're not catching onto something that only they're privy to or understand accurately. It's such a load of Bee S. Because a good movie is a good movie regardless of the genre it confines itself too. If the writing is good any sort of plot line can be portrayed in a meaningful manner. But this movie is simply devoid of all meaning and classifying this as a comedy is such a disservice to the genre where other films like My Cousin Vinny and As Good As it Gets and so many other classics exist. This movie was an abomination and I hate that someone suggested I watch this absolute trash. Uffff. Wasted my time.
Cloud Atlas (2012)
Quite an accomplishment
This movie is one of those once-in-a-lifetime soul stirring gut punches unlike you've ever seen before. I honestly don't know who those people are who have given it negative reviews. From a movie making standpoint I cannot even imagine what a skull crushing feat it must be to try to make a movie out of that book. The story is so complex and while there's almost no movie out there that does justice to the book its based on, I believe that Cloud Atlas the movie has tried to pull of the near-impossible and done a pretty darn good job at it. Of course Tom Hank's and Halle Berry's acting is top notch and so is the whole aesthetic of the movie, the soundtrack, pacing and everything about this movie. Absolutely love the movie and highly recommend it.
Shantaram (2022)
An Absolute Atrocity On the Original Story
I'm not that person who says "the book was better" because I like to watch movies with an open mind even if I have read a book. Sometimes the movies do a good job adapting to a movie and sometimes they don't do such a good job. But with this Shantaram show the creators have done such a painful disservice to the original story that it baffles my mind. Right from the first episode the show takes soooo many liberties with the original story. The show is NOTHING like the book. I get it that certain shows or movies are "based" on a book but with this you can't even say that. This is sooo sooo loosely "based" on the book that all it has done is pick some characters from the book but built almost a completely new script/storyline around it.
With my frustration around the book adaption aside, even if I had never read the book, I find the episodes so discombobulated and disjointed. They are all over the place. One moment he is fine and the other moment he gets brutally beaten up without any context. And then in one moment he's got a good thing going with one female lead and the other all of a sudden she's so hostile to him. One moment he hates living in the slums (which is starkly opposite to what's in the book) and in the other moment he's so devastated at the thought of leaving his friend in the slum.
The script and the resultant episode is so bad and so incohesive that it makes me wonder how did it ever get passed? I am glad this show got cancelled because not only does it completely destroy the ethos of the book but even as a standalone show it is an absolute piece of trash. They had SUCH a good chance to make SUCH a good show out of one of the best books that's ever been written. And they completely defecated on the bed with the execution and storyline. I had such high hopes but this show ended up being a pile loosely strung up trash.
Reboot (2022)
So Well Written and Funny
Just started watching this show on a whim because of a Hulu recommendation. Plus seeing Keegan and Knoxville and Greer on the poster I was like "can't go wrong with such a star cast". But as we watched it we were blown away how good the writing was and how darn funny the show is. The storyline is very well written and the season finale was fire. This show better get renewed!! Highly recommend it.
The acting is great and each episode has us legit laughing out loud. Often times in comedy shows you're left reaching to get a laugh but not in this one. In the finale it's a great mix of comedy, drama and reflection. Of course they leave it on a bit of a cliff hanger but not blatantly so either.
Overall a fantastic show.
Panchayat (2020)
Absolute masterpiece!
India has for far too long gotten a very bad reputation due to all of the Bollywood drivel that comes out of it. Most if not all of it is tacky, gaudy, meaningless trash which almost like disrespects its viewers by making such crap. But then came Panchayat which has single handedly so to speak brought the Indian movie/film/shows realm on the international/Oscar worthy landscape. This show is absolutely incredible from not just a story line perspective but even its cinematography and down to the color grading...all of it is pure perfection. And then there is the music...THE MUSIC. The music director has done such an incredible job at bringing each scene and mood to life with the most well thought out sonic canvas painted beautifully with almost perfect notes.
The music seems to be heavily influenced by Gustavo Santaolalla and I ain't complaining. This show is Emmy and Oscar worthy and I wish it gets more publicity outside of India. The only reason I give it 9 stars instead of 10 is because of Jitendra Kumar. For some odd reason people are hailing him to be as some sort of Daniel Day Lewis of India but I honestly find his acting to be painfully mediocre. He has the same expression for 90% of the scenes...this open mouthed half flabbergasted look or his hands on his hips with pelvis sticking out like a pregnant woman type of reaction to most things. In a show with heavyweight legends like Raghuvir Yadav and Neena Gupta and even incredible actors who played Vikas and Prahlad and even Banrakas.... Jitendra's acting feels so annoying and mediocre that I find it to be a big miss for this show. I wish they had gotten a better actor from the Film and Drama school or somewhere else or ANYWHERE as a matter of fact. Anyone than Jitendra as he does no justice to this amazing show. Apart from that gripe, I LOVE this show and this needs to be seen by more people.
It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
A classic for a reason
This movie just blows my mind how still in this day and age it is absolutely spot on in terms of its messaging about kindness, greed, love and what matters most are the little but big things.
The movie is made so well and even in 2021 the plot and everything about the movie still seems fresh.
If only they made mind blowing movies like these in todays day and age.
Moonlight (2016)
#Oscarsowhite backfires
I tried to genuinely watch this movie with an open mind. Even though given the uproar the AA community had created about oscars apparently being so white, the fact that this movie won an Oscar made me take notice. I wanted to watch it to see what this movie was all about that got it an Oscar.
And I'm sad to say that half way through the movie trying to painfully wade through its overtly pretentious artsy aesthetic I realize this was oscars way of getting this monkey off their back by giving a movie by black artists an Oscar already.
I wanted to whole heartedly support and will continue to support minority artists anyway I can. But this was an average blah movie with nothing to write home about. Given that in spite of it being so average that it received an Oscar tells me that merit has nothing to do with the award given that year. It was more a PR move.
This movie was a pretentious disappointment.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
Irritating ending and boring plot
Yup! There I said it. While the character of Frances McDormand was great and very well played, and so was Sam Rockwell's performance, everything else just fell so flat. I kept watching this movie hoping it would build to a great crescendo resolving all of these great performances and this twisty sort of storyline but I was so disappointed. This movie's ending is garbage. Yup! its an absolutely garbage half a**ed attempt at resolving this plot that seems to keep thickening. Very disappointed by this movie. Wish I hadn't bough the bloody 4K version on release date. What a let down.
Before the Flood (2016)
Well Made Documentary
All I can say is that it baffles me how a country like the United States came to become such a humungous superpower with such uneducated, illogical and downright mentally challenged human beings living here and running the government who deny climate change. You can go to even a third world country and even there the half educated politicans and general public acknowledges and gets concerned about climate change. But not in good old America which yearns for glory days of gas guzzlers and stiffing the rest of the world with its trade deals.
This documentary is hands down an excellent piece of work which needs to be seen. I am baffled at seeing the number of deniers here giving Leo a hard time. Yet they didn't stop to read in the end how they compensated for the documentary creation with the carbon tax. It is disturbing to see what we have done to our planet with over population and consumption. Yet red neck hillbillies want to post online about how Leo now wants to stop them from eating hamburgers and driving cars. The USA is disturbing in its mental cognition and I have no hopes for it. But I hope that the rest of the world watching this movie can force themselves and the rest of the world to turn back climate change by their actions. Industrial or personal.
One Mississippi (2015)
Amazon Please make 100 seasons of this
This show is absolutely stunning. It is a genius masterpiece that takes you on an emotional roller-coaster ride like none other. I thought Louis CK owned the entire Dark Comedy Sitcom genre but man Tig just took it to a whole new level. Each episode leaves you crying one moment and laughing out loud the next. The dialogues, the comedic timing, the imagery and cinematography, editing and the music, everything is just SPOT ON. I have no idea who those other people are whose brains are perhaps not yet fully developed who gave it less than 10 stars. This show deserves an Emmy and if you are someone who is into shows/movies that have a lot of depth and multiple layers and cannot be contained in one "genre" so to speak then this is the show for you. I highly recommend this!!!
The Tree of Life (2011)
Pretentious, Pointless, Pathetic
I consider myself a fairly intelligent movie goer. I am someone who have absolutely loved movies such as There Will be Blood, Babel, Old Boy, Memento, Capote, Tokyo, etc etc. But this movie astounds me. It astounds me and astonishes me in its absolute pointless stupidity. This movie has absolutely no story (so to speak). And I'm sure movie connoisseurs are going to behead me for saying stuff like this, but yes this movie is like a headless chicken. Only one that is not running around like crazy but still has no direction and is dying a very slow death.
I just do not understand that how a movie maker can be so self centered, self-hedonistic and narcissistic in his pursuit to compile his art into such a collection of crap. Agreed that this movie contains some great imagery. But you know what....Terrance Mallik almost starts coming across as this pretentious moron who just does NOT know the meaning of the word 'moderation'. Jesus Christ dude.... grow up, you're making a movie for god's sake, not turning in some PhD thesis in a film making school. Maybe your fellow students, colleagues might appreciate your effort but the audience who pay their hard earned money to go into the theater don't do so so some high headed director masturbates on his own effort while not once thinking whether the audience may or may not enjoy the story.
I am so so so disappointed in this movie and disappointed in the fact that Brad Pitt and Sean Penn chose to be a party to this charade...to this pretentious crap.
To non-aficionado regular YET intelligent movie goers like me, all I can say is that please save your time and money and stay away from this crappy movie that otherwise looks great only in the trailer. The trailer is what drew me to this movie....and thats all there is to it.
Arghhhh!!!!! I hate Tarrence Mallik's audacity with this movie and am going to stay away from all his movies going forward.
