The BBC Television Shakespeare: Measure for Measure (1979)
A Superior Film!
This is an excellent, comprehendible and thoroughly enjoyable version of William Shakespeare's most disturbing comedy. Hats off to Kenneth Colley for his amazing portrayal of Vincentio, the eerie stage-manager of this unique drama. This is an all-around well done production: a must-see!
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
This Film is a Nightmare: Morgoth WOULD Be Pleased!
Now tell me true, O Morgoth's thralls... have you ever witnessed such drivel?
What a horror. One minute of anguish for every year of Aragorn's life, and what do I have to show for it? Numb legs, a numb mind, and the realization that Sauron is still very alive and flourishing in the world to day.
Oh, yes, I hated it. I can understand how people unfamiliar with the original works, or uncomprehending of J.R.R. Tolkien's purpose can enjoy and even revere them: after all, it's a very appealing story. What a pity that so little of the original story made it into the film.
As if the cutting of the scouring of the Shire wasn't enough, those elements not removed were reduced to a perverse parody. I first had this thought when Viggo Mortensen wrenches the Palantir from Pippin's and proceeds to have a seizure, and by the time a flaming Denethor plummeted off the Court of the Fountain to his death, all of my worst fears were confirmed.
My greatest consolation is that these miserable movies will be dead within the century.
