Surprisingly good!
31 October 2014
I guess the IMDb rating is not anymore relevant for the quality of the movies nowadays. back then, prior to 2005, it was a good sign of distinguishing good movies from the crap, but not anymore. I guess IMDb authorities have to find ways to prevent organised efforts leading to high/low rating of the movies in their website. I have been already a victim of false ratings ,i.e. Chef, but now I read only the reviews before I watch a movie.

Having this movie below 7, I thought I should double think about watching it. but after reading some reviews here I gave it a go and can't regret a single minute of it. the movie theme is strong, characters are well-cooked and beautifully directed. I would have normally given it 7/10, cause I gave 10/10 only to very brilliant movies like "Edge of tomorrow", "Minority report", "Forest Gump", "Brave heart", etc. however, after seeing the rating of this movie in par or lower than some recent craps, I decided to give it 9/10.

It is a good movie which makes you feel good about spending 2 hours of your life for watching it.

propaganda and waste of time
21 September 2012
"The Stoning of Soraya", by far is too embarrassing and shameful. I felt deeply sorry for those so called actors and actresses who happened most of them to be Iranian. you just sold your people, your culture and your country for a fist of dollars coming from oil hungry companies who are trying to show a wild image of one of the oldest civilization in earth in order to rob its resources as they did and do in Pakistan, Afghanistan, south America and Arab countries. I would like to congratulate them for doing a job that no Arab, Afghan or Pakistanis dare to do. the countries who are way far strict and fanatic in Islamic rules and this thing happen more often there. but why should western media care as long as the resources are exploited and governments are their puppets? as a person born to an Iranian family, the only thing I share with this movie is the language. I was impressed how someone who was not born in Iran and haven't been even once there, made me so familiar with my country... bravo!

stupid scientists?
21 September 2012
The film in general doesn't make that much sense, though it's breath taking in some parts. The characters are supposed to be well knowledgeable people who made it all the way into that ship. not to mention the money in stack for sending such hightech manmade spaceship to a planet on hand of those folks. but their childish behavior, lack of discipline and acting on their own decisions does not go well with the theme. I mean come on, you don't give that ship to such people who behave less responsible than second grade students. I rather don't go to the details of having that kind of a behavior, shall a person end up at best to a job as a postman or a bar-keeper. but most possibly not a scientist and definitely not to another planet.

I totally understand that the director needs some mistakes from the crew in order to produce something that thrills the audience. but sorrily the viewers level of intellect is assumed as tiny as a mouse in this movie. This was sad as I was most of the time irritated by characters actions and was not really able to find a reasonable answer for my whys and hows raised through the movie.

a generous 4/10 for the CGI graphics and that was the only excuse to see it till the end.

2 hours complete waste of time
25 January 2010
this by far one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life. I gave up to watch it after an hour and regretted that hour a lot. the acting is horrible and there is almost no plot. my guess is that someone came up with a strange shape of an animal and started to make a story around of it. borrowing some ideas from movies like Resident Evil and Aliens doesn't result in a movie like them. if this going to be a top Korean movie, I'd rather won't bother to see even a Korean movie trailer...

By the way, this movies is a good reason to believe that not necessarily a high rating means the movie is promising. I think every Korean who has internet for online gaming rated this movie over the 8, even though has no clue what it is about.

Berlin film festival 2009
8 February 2009
As someone who saw many beautiful and meaningful Iranian movies, this film was completely disappointing although many famous Iranian actors and actresses are playing in it. I attended to the preview of this movie in Berlin film festival 2009, and all I can say that it was waste of time for two hours. this film heavily suffers from the lack of a precise plot and specified dialogue. at the end it leaves the audience with this unanswered question "what was the purpose of the film and what I have to conclude?" in whole movie you only hear that people calling themselves by forenames while you don't have enough time to know who is who. most of the time, weak dialogues between the characters consist of only calling the names, asking where are the others and when those others show up from nowhere, then they ask "what's happening"! the film is very nervous and I as someone who fully understand Persian couldn't follow the discussions, let alone the foreign audiences who have to read the English subtitles.

all and all, I can not recommend it at all.

Very strong and adorable character
2 November 2008
I saw this movie in documentary film festival of Leipzig. I have to say that all audiences were astonished by the subject and the strong roll of the main character in the movie. story is simply about an Iranian girl, living in NE corner of Iran where the city called Mashhad. she has a way of life that not every ordinary girl around her steps in. the movie is full of sad and funny moments that will make your mind busy long after. you will laugh with her jokes, will feel sad in her problems and get inspired by her moves. in the movie background, you will see a lot that normally you can't find it in similar movies.

highly recommended.

Poor movie just to make some funds on something weird
25 July 2008
The movie was completely hopeless. I will not recommend it to anyone who have no idea what's a Dervish and how is the way into it. half of movie is filled with many Arab guys, speaking senselessly and complete out of the picture. they cant even speak Persian and try it painfully. Sufism was made in Iran and in Persian culture to distinguish between the way Arabs and Persians took to approach to god. I think the Arab directors should seek something in their culture and make movies about them. this kind of subjects are such important and respectful that even the big directors from Iran dare to approach. while directors like Hatamikia, Majidi and Beizaei with their brilliant filmography don't touch such a subject, I wonder how an unknown director did so. I just don't get how some Iranian actors/actresses played in such a waste. Golshifte Farahani is far more superior to play in this movie.

one of the real drams
23 December 2004
that looks really good film for you if you have lived in Iran for long time. this film points to some kind of customs and cultures in Iran needs you to be an Iranian if you want to realize it.for whom they are outside of Iran and they've heard about Iranian cinema this could not be an interesting movie. because they will not get what is going on. however most of people inside Iran really like it and that is one of the most beautiful films ever made. Mozhdeh Shamsai was playing very nice in this film as well as Reza Kianian, Darioush Arjmand and etc. this film contains a whole bunch of famous Iranian movie players inside. perhaps this is the reason film has a very strong structure to express its message for audiences. I gave it 95 out of 100. one of the best in Iranian cinema.

spoilers of history
5 December 2004
Warning: Spoilers
The film is not something can represent the condition on that time. In this film we see that Persian Empire showed extremely weak and non-civilized. However Greek culture got lots of things from the Persians and used them to grow up. Acropolis was made years after Persepolis and there were lots of statues in it, which is copied from Persian holy symbols like Lions with wind, horses with one horn and eagles. One thing I have to point here is, the Alexander was not grown up in a comfortable conditions like palace. Otherwise he could not be such a brave killer. As far as I know he was grown up between people that fighting and killing was very common. How you can expect somebody lives all of his life in palace and in battle face to an elephant?! And the reason, which caused Persian Empire defeated against him, was this. On that time Persian people were living in a very nice civilized cities in calm and peace never even could have thought of war. Persian army was made from professional bodies but it was not enough to rise against Alexander, had been having lots of men from west. And rests of people were not trained to be in battle. So what we can expect except Alexander conquer? I found the director that much unknown of history had been used one of the important Persian symbols at back name of Alexander! (This symbol was erased right after some zartoshtian people raise a stink against using it) He did not realize even this symbol belongs to Alexander enemies not something Alexander believed in it! You can find lots of this kind of mistakes in film. The film just wants to show something in name of Alexander not really what it was!
