Power Book II: Ghost (2020)
Tariq grew on me
Tariq grew on me. He was my least favorite character in the original power of series. I remember when I heard the rumor about him getting his own serious. I was so annoyed until I watched the first episode. Without spoiling too much James Saint Patrick left to Tariq in a bind. The poor kid has to dig himself out of it inch by inch. This series has forced this character to mature fast. He thought he knew everything but he really doesn't. I'm glad that the series is soon to premiere. It's third season. I'm looking forward to meeting all the new characters. Some people say that the show is crappy, but that's only because they really haven't given it a chance. Give season one a chance and you will be as hooked as I am.
Reservation Dogs (2021)
A good series with a few problems
I really like the series. The stories are original and found an authentic way to incorporate Native American culture. My only issue is the stereotypical way that hip hop culture is depicted in the series. Some of the criticisms are that black culture is mocked in this series for example Bear's father in season one and the twins. I agree that it is to a certain extent. Also, the lack of black Native representation in a series that takes place in Oklahoma is questionable. Representation matters. This is not an example of shoehorning in representation where it did not exist. Anyone who sits down and does some research will see that there is a population that does exist and is not properly represented in the media other than to act as though they are trying to claim something they are not. As I said before I really do like this series and I hope that the writers and creators take into account these problems.
Tell Me Lies (2022)
A slow burn
The title makes me think of Fleetwood Mack's song of the same name. I didn't know what to expect with this series. Honestly, I decided to give it a chance after watching a TikTok review video. Truthfully, i'm up to episode four and I don't like any of the male characters. Come to think of it the one female character that I do like is not the lead. It is a character named Bree who is one lost soul. I think the writers want me to empathize with Lucy but really I feel like she is so naïve and is becoming obsessed with the ex girlfriend of the guy she's sleeping with. If you make the decision to watch the show just understand that in the beginning you were going to wonder why this show feels like just another CW show. If you continue to keep watching you will sit down and just shake your head at how pitiful most of these characters are.
Nope (2022)
Nope makes you think
Let me preface this by saying that I am very skeptical of movie reviews. Sometimes the reviewers like a movie that I don't like. Other times they don't like a movie that I like. I'm one of those people that will take a chance to actually watch a movie and form my own opinion on it. With that said, Nope is a good movie. With the popularity of streaming sites and superhero movies, people are used to a specific formula when it comes to a story . They are not a fan of slow burn storytelling. Nor are they a fan of movies that make you think. When most people think of Jordan Peele they immediately think of his first movie Get Out. People use that movie as a litness test and think that anything else that he releases is supposed to be just like that movie. Us and Nope are completely different.
I feel like a lot of movies are being dismissed because they are not catering to the immediate gratification crowd. That's a shame! As for the movie nope, there are some excellent performances in this movie. The story is complex but it's not hard to understand if you pay attention. There is a twist at the end that proves that the trailers did not spoil the movie at all. Basically, the movie is not that hard to understand. The conversations that occur which explain everything that happens. There's some things that you will pick up instantly and others that you will understand when you sit down and really think about what you've seen. It may take more than one viewing to fully understand the movie. As for the criticisms and confusion about the chimpanzee and the sitcom scenes, they pertain to another situation that happens later in the story. For instance, the idea that it is impossible to tame a predator surfaces more than once in the story. I won't spoil it for you but once you realize their theme it makes sense.
If you're really interested in watching this movie then go and see it and make your own judgment. I personally think that this movie is misunderstood by a lot of people who never intended on trying to understand it in the first place. I hate to agree with certain directors and their criticisms of the current state of cinema but they are correct. Unfortunately, streaming and superhero movies have change the landscape of movie going and not for the better. Not all stories are going to unfold immediately for you. Sometimes the best movies really make you think.
Wrong Turn (2021)
The movie wasn't perfect but it kept my attention
The movie is not what I expected. In fact, I kept it on my Showtime movie list for a year until I finally watched it. I can't speak for anyone else but I liked that twist. Really all the characters had to do was not stay on the path and not venture. However, you know how these horror movies are. Plus, there's one character named Adam that is pretty much the catalyst for all the bad things that happened. His decision to antagonize one of the townsfolk did not help.
Was the movie perfect? Nope.
However when I look for a horror movie I tend to look for the strange ones, the crazy ones and the campy ones.
Yes, I did watch the original movie by the way.
Chucky (2021)
Watch it for yourself
As someone who was afraid of Chucky for 33 years I can say that this series is pretty good. There are a lot of Easter eggs from the original movies. Be mindful of the type of reviews that you read because some people like to shoehorn their biases into them.
Watchmen (2019)
Don't listen to the trolls!
Don't let the whiny reviews stop you from watching a great series and I read the comic. Damon Lindelof did a great job with this series. I swear people are always looking for something to be offended by. The characters are good and the storyline is good. Watch the show for yourself and stop reading reviews from people who are easily triggered. There was nothing cliche about Watchmen. Trolls really need to be prevented from making reviews because their reviews all sound the same.
The Tribes of Palos Verdes (2017)
Heartbreaking , but real
The movie in my opinion was good. The cast was very good. I'm wondering if this is the movie that made Ryan Murphy decide to cast actor Cody Fern in American Crime Story: Versace. It probably is. I liked the bond between siblings in this movie. I also liked how it depicted a family living in what is supposed to be the Valhalla of Suburban life and how truly fractured that family was. The mother who was played by Jennifer Garner was a mess and depended on her son to ease her pain. The father selfishly decided to start a new family and leave his children behind with their broken mother. Medina was more equipped to handle this , but Jim fell apart. His downward spiral was so sad. That ending was heartbreaking, but that's how things are nowadays. I appreciated the movie for that.
