Poker Face (2023)
Television at its finest
Sharp writing, brilliant performances, callbacks to serial murder-mysteries and stunning cinematography and production designs make for a thrilling ride that proves Rian Johnson belongs on any medium.
Natasha Lyonne offers up a powerful performance that solidifies her as one of today's great character actors, while the jaw-dropping list of guest stars never disappoints, whether they're comedic relief or dramatic cruxes, the actors always deliver.
There are moments where you can tell producers cut costs, and the show may not be quite as enthralling as Johnson's "Knives Out" films, but "Poker Face" fits where it sits and is likely the best content on Peacock.
The Thing About Pam (2022)
Woof
A perfect example of why not everything should be turned into a show... cheap production design, laughable performances and a slow burn on a story they give away willingly right away. Zellweger is the show's only redeemable quality.
Life & Beth (2022)
Weirdly captivating
A really sweet exploration of grief in a complicated relationship, as well as a look into happiness, all anchored by some creative writing from Schumer and a darker and more muted performance than she usually gives.
Inventing Anna (2022)
Poor framing and questionable performances
With the exception of Julia Garner, all of the performances are totally phoned in. That's not helped by the fact that the story isn't framed correctly - why should we care about the journalist when the show's name and marketing is all about Anna?
Eternals (2021)
Not as bad as people say
"Eternals" get a bad wrap because it's artsier than most Marvel films, but it is honestly not nearly as bad as some people say.
The script has some problems, sure, but the cinematography, acting and ambition of the film are all more than commendable.
Pam & Tommy (2022)
Wildly entertaining but needs the real Pam
"Pam & Tommy" is a blast to watch with some amazing, transformative acting. The show begins to fall apart a little bit about halfway through, completely benching characters we were told were important - additionally, Pam doesn't have a single line the entire first episode.
What the show REALLY needs is Pamela Anderson's advise because this is really her story and it shouldn't have been told without her.
Come from Away (2021)
Not appropriate
It makes me squirm to think that they made a musical about 9/11 and while the production design, etc. Was nice, it was impossible for me to move on from that fact. I was so incredibly distracted by the people calling out "poor me" because their town was distrusted by international terrorism.
Red Notice (2021)
Not amazing, but still fun
Despite obvious problems with the screenplay and actually too many twists - some of which were obvious - it's still a fun watch with good laughs and action scenes. Gal Gadot chews scenery better than I've ever seen her do before.
Dear Evan Hansen (2021)
Woof...
A creepy story that doesn't translate well from stage to screen. Even the music was unappealing despite being a huge hit on Broadway. On top of that, the acting was cheesy and forced while the script was flat.
