Apocalypto (2006)
Not a "Disney Film"
Someone said because it's about a man who wants to return home, that this is a typical Hollywood film. I should say not. It's one of the most violent films I have ever seen. I am happy that I watched it at home, where I could have my lights on. It is a horrific reminder of the general evilness that resides in Man. I watch these films and become reminded of the horrors in Gaza, the Holocaust, Darfur, etc, because at the end of the day, people have been evil since the dawn of time.
I wasn't familiar with the Mayan empire, and I would imagine that Mel has taken some liberties, but let's face it, the Aztecs were horrid, so it's possible that this has some truth.
The cinematography in this film is amazing. And as someone who enjoys "reading" her movies, I found the dialogue accurate and the acting worthwhile. (I would imagine not many survive who naturally speak the Mayan language).
Watch it, it's a good film, but don't expect Mary Poppins by any means.
Wo hu cang long (2000)
Simply amazing
I won't write a long-winded review because frankly if you haven't seen this film by now, you are not living a full life.
Easily the most beautiful film (next to The Black Stallion and the LOTR series) ever made. I've seen Lawrence of Arabia and this film brings to mind the definition of the word EPIC. Beautiful, breathtaking and superb, it should be a permanent addition to your library.
If you are looking for one of the most fabulously crafted love story combined with amazing martial arts and Oscar worth scenery, this is the film for you. I work in the film industry and I see a lot of movies. I always return to CTHD time and time again for a spirited take on a classic story of unrequited love. The subtle nature of the acting is different from what we in the "West" are used to, but it fits. I highly recommend watching it in the original language (I believe it's Hunan, not Mandarin but I'm not sure) with English subtitles as opposed to a version that's dubbed in English. The sound quality is poor on the dubbed film and overruns the fabulous score.
Lars and the Real Girl (2007)
Outstanding film
This was a last minute choice. We glanced up, thought what the heck and figured a film with a Real Doll in it has to be good, right?
Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined such a touching, poignant film, incredible writing, well acted, excellent pacing. I won't go into any details because you need to see this film.
It is a piece of true Americana, love and in a little bit, despair. The characters are so well-cast that I felt an instant connection and found myself tearing up when not laughing hysterically. Ryan Gosling gives what I consider an award winning performance and I truly could see myself living in this wonderfully accepting little town. If only real life could imitate art.
Good job.
The 1900 House (1999)
Loved this show
I love the entire "House" series. This show in particular was very interesting. I am always fascinated by how people live/lived. I have had varying degrees of income (from very little to middle class and upper middle when I was a child). I take pride on my ability to withstand hardship and shows like this inspire me. To think what our families were able to cope with makes something silly like my cable going down very irrelevant. It is good to remember how tough people are and what they are able to do and this series does that very well. I can't wait for the next installment of House programs. 1900 House was my first introduction to the series and I immediately went out and rented other versions as well as eagerly awaited them on my television.
