Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
A really well-filmed movie
In a nutshell: Very nice cast appearances.
Excellent photography.
The scenario is also interesting.
Well directed in an amazing Japanese background.
Although it is 2.30 hours, you won't be bored. For those who pay attention to detail, you might like to check the music theme in the background.
In general, 7.5/10 would make justice to the movie.
Attention blockbuster-fans: There is a chance that you are not going to like the movie! Sorry :(
Alexander (2004)
Not bad at all
I can't explain the overall 5.5.
Maybe it was not the best movie of the year, but it sure showed to everyone who Alexander the Great was and what he has achieved. Especially for those people out there who do not have a clue about historical faces, this movie will help them appreciate the value of being a real leader, a pragmatic emperor, and of course which are the drawbacks of such a heroic and ultra optimistic figure.
Very nice role playing by everyone in the movie.
The only disadvantage might have been the "overcoverage" of his bi-sexual life (and that is why some scenes were cut in the Greek 'market') but OK.
It's worth watching though, even if you are not a fan of historical/war films.
Oi aparadektoi (1991)
Probably the best series ever
Aparadektoi was and probably is the best series that Greek TV has produced. Personally I would rank it with a 10 out of 10.
The major evidence? They were produced in 1991 and we still watch them and we laugh in the same way.
A lot of people are asking MEGA Channel (the TV channel which was showing them) to re-transmit them but for one reason or another, they never do.
Fortunately, some days ago MEGA channel had its 15-year celebration and it showed some of the episodes but they were not enough (obviously!)
Anyway, if you are a Greek somewhere in US, Australia or Europe don't miss the chance to try to find them whether on-line or in a video-club. You 'll then understand what you were missing!
Lost in Translation (2003)
A must see movie which is something... different
Lost in translation is for these years one of the best films of the year. You would ask me: we are still in the beginning, how?! And I would reply: You will see in the Academy awards ;)
Very nice and touchy movie with two really nice leading actors, Bill and Scarlett (ah.. Scarlett), shot in the chaotic city of Tokyo (which I had the chance to visit myself and see exactly what is going on there) and it is about the story of two not-satisfied-with-their-married-life americans who meet there.
The screenplay and the direction are really nice and the scenario although is not something extraodinary, it really has that spice to keep you awake all the time.
In addition, the first thing that I did the next morning after seeing the film was to buy the really nice soundtrack of the movie.
Sofia probably steps on her father's rue.
The tagline? Or at least that is what I got: Love comes in places that you would never even imagine and if it comes, don't let it go, just DON'T. Grab it as strong as you can.
Definitely one of THE movies for this year.
Also please pay attention to Scarlett and if you would like to go a step further, after the LiT, go and see the girl with a pearl earring, to compare the two Scarletts...
