The Big Short (2015)
I'm going to find moral redemption at the roulette table
"The Big Short" is a smart and compelling movie that offers a unique take on the 2008 financial crisis. While it may be challenging for non-US viewers due to its financial jargon, the film manages to keep the audience engaged with its witty and fast-paced dialogue. The inclusion of Selena Gomez explaining synthetic CDOs was a brilliant move that added a touch of humor and accessibility to a complex subject. The stellar performances by Christian Bale and Steve Carell stand out, but the entire cast does an excellent job in bringing their characters to life.
Overall, it is a well-crafted film that successfully navigates the intricacies of the financial crisis and makes them accessible to a broader audience. It sheds light on the greed and corruption that contributed to the crisis, and the consequences that millions of people faced as a result. It's a must-watch for anyone interested in understanding the complexities of the financial world and the impact it has on the economy and society as a whole.
Gekijouban Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (2021)
What a flashback, what a pleasant surprise
For some reason this just got released in UAE (May 2022) and watched it by pure chance. My daughter had plans to watch it today with her friends, but they bailed out last minute. Given that she had been acing her exams recently and the fact that she is an animi geek, we decided to go together. At 47, I believe I was by far the eldest person within the audience. Although I am huge fan of Studio Ghibli works (I have their full collection) however, it was clear from the poster that this is something way different, and boy it was..... After stumbling a bit about why they keep brining up all kind of seafood very frequently, I finally got it towards the beginning of second quarter of the movie.
From there, it was like I passed a time portal to the past, suddenly I was 15 again, some of the scenes -like the kiss- literally gave me the goosebumps. The dialoged, the animation, the characters development all were absolutely amazing. I have been advised by the experts -my daughter- that the series is even better, so I will give that a go very soon.
If you don't mind a bit of gore and loud shouting in Japanese -oh my they can shout- then give this a go with your kids if you get the chance, it is quality entertainment that is far better than most of what Hollywood has been offering for a while.
Joker (2019)
Far less than what I expected
Up until about the niddIe I was feeling like: ok, maybe I came to this movie with a lot of expectations, i should still gave it a go for the second half and surly somewhere I will get why it was liked that much....... nothing happened! no depth no story no engagement. Other villains movies such as Hannibal, V for Vendetta or even Megamind for crying out loud have delivered far more substance and entertainment than Joker did... or maybe it's just me.
Boston Legal (2004)
Very possibly the best TV show to date
Just started watching this show for the third time now and it still amazes me. This once in a life time -hopefully not- magic formula of thin delicious crust of original hummer topped with a dash of harmless silliness at times, wrapping a thick stuffing of all kind of serious and contemporary issue that relate to all of us on so many levels. Religion, politics, drugs, homosexuality, crime, mirage, family and the list goes on.
I honestly can't think of any subject that is generally considered worth examining that is not present in this show in a wonderful formula of an unbiased and simplified manner. Where it gets truly genius is, at the platform of a court, where all sides present their best demonstration to support their views and leave it to us to form our own judgment. This show respects us, and it does that brilliantly while tackling subjects that matters to our own life.
Cars 3 (2017)
Kids should go to this movie, parents MUST see this movie
Apart from pain in the neck because of the bad seat I ended up -far left of the first raw which is about 5 meters from the screen- everything was truly amazing.
Great visuals, which is really kind of the standard of what to expect to see when a PIXAR movie so no surprises there. Well executed light hummer that suits a very wide range of age groups and genders.
Kids will like the movie for sure, but most parents -especially approaching or past 40's- will fall in love with it. For a 41 old father at what I think is the peak of my career, this movie echoed on so many levels that I a tear or 2 have escaped involuntary.
I got to watch it with a group of parents & kids and was happy to see all were really touched & moved by the depth of the script. Will give it another go soon -yest it is that good- from a good seat.
Boston Public (2000)
I can't think of anybody who should not watch this show
When I first watched this show I was mentally still a teenager but even then I thought it is brilliant. Now I am watching it again as a father and it's just a whole new dimension of brilliance. This show is excellent on so many levels, the subject, the script, the characters, the cast, the acting and most importantly the relevance to most, if not all, of us. I have to admit it is has an element of fantasy though as it is almost impossible to find such amazing staff in any school -let alone public schools-. You might find one or two really brilliant teachers here or there but to be surrounded with such passionate and qualified school staff is a kind of fiction, these days at least. This is one TV show we can learn a lot from while being truly entertained.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
OMG & I thought Gravity was over rated
The hype, the anticipation, the wait.............. were for this?!!! I mean where do I start? I am struggling to find at least one good thing about this movie but I honestly can't. What a BIG disappointment.
How can anyone (let alone Lucas) read the script and say: yes this is the new Star Wars. I really don't understand the point here. Is this movie dedicated to kill the franchise? or just to prove a point that you can dump the worse smelly s**t and people will stand in queue and pay to watch it for the mere reason that it has Starwars logo on it. Seeing that it has 8.3 rating on IMDb I recon it is the second reason.
The only consolation I have is I did not watch it in the theater.
The Martian (2015)
Better than "Gravity" but in the same zip code.....
For an 8.1 rating (current rating as I am writing these lines) I expected far more from this movie but I admit, it is my mistake. If only I read the objective criticism some honest and reliable IMDb members laid over this movie, I could have used the last 2h: 21 minutes doing something more useful like doing the dishes or washing my car as these two tasks will give you roughly that same amount of thrill and satisfaction as watching this movie. I can't say it is as bad as Gravity, but it is not more than 3 to 4 blocks away from it. What really got me on my nerve was trying to promote this movie as: Cast away in space
. Are you kidding me?
Maleficent (2014)
I love this movie
This movie casts one of Hollywood's hottest bad-ass characters, where she delivers probably the performance of her career without any "hot" scene whatsoever, in a movie that featured a ridiculously stunning visuals in a remarkable new approach to an all times classic fairytale. The outcome is just outstanding.
With the exception of few-easy to overcome because it is a fairytale- gaps in the script, this movie is almost perfect. Performance, environment, visual effects, cast, costumes -particularly the black "angry queen" dress- are all top notch. I lost counts on how many times I have watched it and for sure will still do.
The trailer however was badly misleading and that actually costed me my chase to watch it on the big screen.
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (2014)
A MUST watch......now, now, now.
The facts this show tells about America makes me never want to live there however, the fact this show is still broadcasting in America makes me what to.
This show speaks to everyone; it is a fusion of: news, documentary and comedy that provokes all emotions known to humankind in just under 30 minutes in each episode. No doubt, that John Oliver delivers (in my humble experience of TV shows) an unparalleled outcome however, such a huge effort cannot possibly be a one-man show. Thus, this is a small thank you note to the small army that should be helping him in getting the material for the show and (I cannot believe I am saying this) also the legal team who are -I imagine- cannot catch a breath dealing with the reflections on each episode.
The Delivery Man (2015)
The Brits score again
Having watched and liked Spy very much the minute I saw this playing on an Emirates flight to London I clicked hoping to see the same quality and boy it did.
Humor is so clever, rapid, subtle and innovative that before I knew it I have already watched all episodes (I think 6) available and barely had time to go through the materials I have for my meeting. In other words no low quality "filling" whatsoever was spotted.
It so good that on the way back next day I watched it all again before even trying to see what else was there (a total of 1500 channels). Yes it is that good.
I would highly recommend it to all comedy fans. Looking forward for more of it.
Gravity (2013)
Big fan.... that could not watch it all............
I am big Sandra Bullock fan, but I could not watch more than 20 minutes of this movie
The only reason I did not give it "one" is just to acknowledge the visual effects. Other than that this movie is beyond bad.
I really like Sandra as an actor and as a person. Still I could not go beyond 20 minutes into this nonsense....... Yes it is that bad.
Good visual effects can make a great movie like "Contact" a wonderful one. But here..... i don't know... it was like putting whip cream on pile of s**t... The sad fact is we live in a time some people actually like that!! bothe the movie and the pile!
Gone Girl (2014)
Just add some random dancing scenes and it would make a kick ass Bollywood movie
I really struggled not to rate this movie as one despite being extremely awful but then I realized I have seen a lot worse movies. Maybe the reason I wanted to rate this movie as "One" so bad is to offset of the mind-blowing gigantic bubble rating of 8.2!!!!!!!! To be fair to actors, they did what they were supposed to do, but with such extremely bad, no point, shallow script, there is no way this movie could be even close to being acceptable, even if the naked- covered in blood-shower scene was performed by Julia Roberts and Anthony Hopkins. I mean that could have explained the high number of views and reviews but not the rating. With such hype and high rating, chances are you will probably watch this movie however, if you are one of those who actually value their own time and try to spend it on something worthy, then this is a one you should not waste your time on.
Legends of the Fall (1994)
In what word this movie does not get ANY Oscar??!
Not that it matters really as many great movies didn't and they are still great however, even for somebody who is not a big drama fan like me, this is one of the greatest movies of all times. Even great movies like Gone with the wind, pail in its presence.
Saying this movie is corny or story is a cliché' is just like looking at the full moon in a perfect clear summer night sky and not like it just because moon is too old and you've seen too much moon before.!!!!
Along with Fight club this is Brad Pitt at his absolute best. As for sir Anthony Hopkins, dude what you were thinking taking part in Thor and Avengers???? Next time you need some change cash call me before doing something that stupid. As for this movie though........ I am speechless, basking in your awe, like always.
