My Mother's Replacement (2015)
HEART BREAKING & UPLIFTING
For a short film, there is a lot here to unpack. Suicide is not an answer. No matter how forgotten or lonely you feel, you are loved. No matter how insignificant you feel, people need you. If you give-up on you, then you gave up on them.
To quote my grandpa, "Biology be damned, only love makes families." He stepped up and raised my grandma's children and never looked back. He would add, "Any thing that you do out of love, you will never regret."
Children can be very receptive and mature. Such as the case here. There is a hole in her heart dad can't fill and there is a hole in his heart she can't fill. What she can do is set out to rebuild her family.
Indie filmmakers are starving artists and entrepreneurs. For them, making movies in a true passion. They don't have the luxury of a big budget, so they have to work harder.
Vanished (2014)
KIDNAPPING TESTS A COUPLE
My grandma said there is no greater loss than that of a child. Every child is the best of you. With them, goes the best of you.
My mom said nothing tests a marriage like the loss of a child. In a healthy marriage, they turn to each other. Together, we will see each through this.
This film explores both when a couple's daughter is kidnapped. Will they cling to one another for comfort or allow this to drive them apart.
Can they keep the hope alive?
This is a low budget indie film from a Christian family. They prove time and time again that you don't need Hollywood to tell a gripping and heart wrenching story.
The Text (2023)
TOUCHING FLICK HAS A STORY TO TELL
The Text is a family drama. More importantly, it delivers a life lesson shrouded in tears. The distraction of a simple text forever alters two families.
This drives home the importance of the "Don't text and drive" message. Remember, anything can divert your attention away from driving. Beyond that is the devastation of death, the power of love, finding forgiveness, and starting to heal are equally important.
Just one of the touching films from Dreams Come True Films, LLC. I have had the pleasure of watching them all... and I even met the filmmaker. All of them have an important story to tell.
My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman (2018)
A FAR MORE RELAXED BUT ENGAGING FORMAT
It should come as no surprise that this is Dave Letterman's element. A more or less free-form talk show. Unlike his more structured network shows, his personality comes through in more serious dialog and not just his signature humor. With a single guest, Dave has adopted a more conversational interview style. And the result is a more relaxed and engaging interview. Each interview is accompanied by related but much more personal clips than one expects from a typical talk show.
Losing Breen (2017)
A LESSON IN LOVE & LOYALTY
LOSING BREEN
Be it a caregiver or patient, odds are you can relate to this film in some manner. Insert your medical issue as well.
Breen is stricken with early onset alzheimer's... locking her in her own world. Sort of insulated from her self destructing family.
Blessed or cursed with two well-meaning but conflicting caregivers. Both her mother and son question if the other is up to challenge. The cold reality is, neither of them are... alone.
This roller coaster ride poses questions about love, loyalty and sacrifice. Then challenges you to look within yourself for the answers.
As my 12 year old nephew is quick to remind me, "Teamwork makes the dream work." Yes, even a child knows we can't do it alone.
A Second Chance (2018)
A MUST SEE FILM
I had the great pleasure of attending a church screening of A Second Chance. My dates were my mom and my soon to be 12 year old nephew.
The plot was simple enough. Three bad girls tangle with the law before putting their past behind them. More unique is the victum and their judge.
It could have been a story of juvenile detention, but what we have is a seemingly leniant sentence. I thought the judge was off his rocker. :)
What we see are bad girls who lack all compassion, respect or even human decency. They were more bully and thug like than simply misguided youth.
Call it faith in God or intuition, the judge trusted them to more or less find their redemption. With a little steering from above, they do just that.
From the opening fire sequence, we were all pulled into the film. My nephew was glued to the screen. I found myself thanking him for being a good kid.
As their stories unfold, you find their families are misguided. And I started to think that I may have been too harsh in my judgement of them.
From there, I will leave the heart breaking journey and emotional roller coaster to you. And it is truly both.
The Promise (2017)
BEAUTIFUL FILM WITH MUCH HEART
A very promising film that should appeal to any teenager/young adult child, parent or grandparent. All will find a character that they can relate. Humor, heart break,
embarrassment, fear, love and forgiveness abound. In addition to a great escape, I think every film is a silent teacher. Here, there is a clear message that a promise is both a sacred social contract and a self-imposed prison. Second, is a solid reminder that while love is great it requires some work. I want to say in closing that it has been an honor to watch the caliber of this company's productions improve.
Cries Unheard (2015)
A must see for kids
Domestic violence, bullying and racism are very serious issues. Cries Unheard from Dreams Come True Films takes a raw, heavy handed and unflinching approach to all 3 in under 30 minutes. Sounds impossible yet Candy J Beard makes it look so simple. Couple this with the short attention span of children and you have what I consider a must see for kids. The synopsis she gives this barely scratches the surface. Every parent, teacher or even coach at some point struggles at finding the time or place for those all important discussions. This is sure to do just that. Beyond a teaching tool, this short film is also an emotional roller coaster that is truly moving, thought provoking and frightening for both kids and adults.
In a Cage (2013)
This could save lives in the right hands
I know the primary goal of any movie is to entertain. Like books, great movies allow you to escape reality -- even if only for a short time. Together, they are an award winning combination. But some movies are so much more than that. They inspire us or teach. Candy Beard's 'In A Cage' will do all of the above. One would be tempted to say it is a drama about domestic violence but that would really sell it short. Because a movie like this could be a life saver in the hands of a victim or witness. If you are neither, I hope it inspires you take up domestic violence. This is a raw, gritty and thought provoking ride from Dreams Come True Films builds from the easily dismissed rantings of a drunk meanness to brutal violence and torture while their well meaning neighbors struggle with butting out or jumping in.
