The Changeling (2023)
Never-ending spiral
The show never gets to the point. The main character is a self absorbed man who repeats all the time that he's a god, and fails to see beyond how he wants his loved ones to be. The series depict the Black Brazilian religion as witchcraft (it's demonised enough already - super bad).
All the opportunities to make the series intriguing are missed, hooking you basically by the curiosity to understand what is actually happening.
The answer is never reached and the last scene of the first season is just the teaser for the next season. Basically, if they decide not to film the next season, no one would be missing anything.
What a horrible way to write a plot that could be so good!
Hunger (2023)
Beautiful direction, but the story is not that great
The scenes have beautiful details and actors are amazing. The young apprentice is humble who will convey the social critique about fame and glamour in an industry that feeds from hypocrisy. The concept of hell kitchen and toxic environment made me feel tense all the time. Two hours to do that critique, but dialogues are poor and the end is a bit cliché.
Worth watching, just don't expect a feel good feeling or too deep complex characters (bad/good; success/humble; ethical/betrayal is the only possibility in the narrative).
It's nice that there is a woman in the leading role with out having to point that out. The actress is brilliant.
Paradise - Una nuova vita (2019)
Terrible script, some good scenes
The film has good scenes and some good photography, but plays with cliché jokes (priest, gays) and is grounded in so much patriarchal ideas about men entitlement to do whatever they want.
The end sucks. Lazy writer.
Love Wedding Repeat (2020)
Idiotic, ridiculous and sometimes funny
Spoiled bride gets her brother to be her servant at her wedding because she cheated on her fiance.
The development of actions are just absolutely ridiculous. Don't waste your time.
Klaus (2019)
A must see!
The film mixes the imaginary of Santa with adventure and love (the spirit of Christmas) in a fantastic way. The animation is beautiful and there are nice poetic touches about building a community in every part of the film.
Definitely will be included in the holidays watching list for the next years.
Long Shot (2019)
Surprisingly Bad
Actors I used to like in a film that tries to be politically correct (women in power), but it is just a bad film with terrible twists in the story. Time wasted.
Missing Link (2019)
Terrible argument!
The story is about this self centred man who wants to join this man-only-colonial society and for that he engages in adventures to proof that he has seen, killed or captured the creatures believed to be a myth. It could be good if it wasn't for the insistence on the dynamics of brave masculinity, superiority over other peoples (servants, women, animals, etc) and the man as a hero (his ideas or actions free everyone involved). These notions are so tyring and redundant during the entire film!!! Scenes of violence, ideas of "undeveloped" creatures, and the uncritical notion that colonization is ok are elements that when put together make a film that could be good, something terribly bad, like this.
Just sad.
