True Detective (2014)
In defence of S2: Don't listen tot the mass people! Sometimes they're wrong.
I just finished watching S2, and I think it was really good. Is it better than S1? I mean, S1 was nearly perfect so ofcourse it's gonna be hard to 'top' that. But True Detective is an anthology series so it's not really meant to be compared in the first place.
I saw S1 about 8 years ago. I think leaving a time gap between watching S1 and 2, personally helped me to not compare them too much. Plus the criticism about S2 ironically made me go into this unbiased. I didn't expect anything really. Just wanted to finally see what it was like for myself. And I'm so glad I did.
I think WAY too many people compare it to S1, and as a result are left dissapointed, which is a shame.
S2 isn't trying to be anything but its own story. And it succeeds in that. Sure the plot isn't as haunting and the dialogue isn't as philosophical as S1 but it's also not trying to be that. I think many people missed that. S2 is wonderfully dark and atmospheric. It's its own story, with its own characters, who each have their own backstory. And if we look at the more technical aspects, we get great cinematography, a great soundtrack and great acting (Colin Farrel is exceptional, also enjoyed Taylor Kitsch and Rachel McAdams, and Vince Vaughn does his best performance yet).
This is great, atmospheric storytelling that I honestly find reminiscent of Twin Peaks at times, which is known and loved for its unique and dark atmosphere. It's the HBO quality we're used to, and I wish more people would watch this from a different, more neutral angle.
It really is worth it.
