Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)
What was it all about?
As far as it goes, this movie was interesting enough. But what was it all about?
The DA is killed by two assassins. His friend, a forensic accountant, is killed by the same pair who then pursue the accountant's son. We are never told why - even though the son passes the father's secret information on to Angelina Jolie's character.
I was expecting to have all the answers before the credits, but was disappointed. This was the fundamental shortcoming of this otherwise enjoyable movie.
Without Remorse (2021)
FAR TOO FAR FETCHED
All action movies call on us to suspend our disbelief. But Without Remorse takes that to an entirely new level. It would be an understatement to say the plot is wafer thin. If you set that aside, you are faced with a string of scenarios that are totally unbelievable - like the US Defense Secretary and CIA Director meeting with very low level officers in a cargo container in a warehouse to approve a mission. You might be prepared to accept such an improbability once, but not in scene after scene.
The only positive - for which I gave it a generous three stars - was the action.
The Irishman (2019)
DISAPPOINTING OLD ACTORS
The Irishman had much to offer but it was let down by the choice of actors. Their age was a problem, despite "a custom three-camera rig and extensive digital de-aging visual effects (that) were used to make De Niro, Pacino, and Pesci appear younger in many of the film's flashbacks". De Niro's age was particularly on display; he looked like a jittery old man not the young man who's daughter he was standing up for.
This was less of an issue for Pacino and Pesci because their roles were different.
Quite apart from age, I find it difficult now to watch a De Niro on film without seeing his foul-mouthed, disgusting anti-Trump rants. De Niro was once a great actor, but is it time to put him out to pasture?
