Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (1972)
too much praise
This movie received way too much praise.
The cinematography is the only good thing the movie has to offer. The location, the costumes, the camera work, it all looks very good and somehow makes the movie worthwhile.
The pacing is slow, which would be okay if the shots don't linger for so long, especially in the beginning. It adds to the atmosphere, but making every second scene a "lingering" one is way too excessive.
The acting is mediocre at best - that includes Klaus Kinski. No idea why he is praised so highly. There is no emotion in the characters (even for german standards. Except kinskis brief outbursts), they stay monotone the entire time. The slight asynchronous audio does not help (i guess lots of it was recorded after filming?)
Since i'm german, i watched it with the original audio and my oh my... not only the delivery is bad, but also the dialogue itself is just terrible. I'm not sure if the crew improvised most of it or if they were written by a middle schooler, but they are simply dumb (apparently the dumbing down of movies is not a recent thing). It constantly states the obvious. That in combination with the monotone delivery often makes it sound like the actors are (please pardon me) mentally challenged.
Tldr; watch it for the experience and see it as an "art" piece. Don't judge it as a real movie.
In the Tall Grass (2019)
better only watch the first half
Very good movie in the first hour. Interesting premise, decent acting, good pacing.
The "concept" of the grass field is rarely used despite being predestined for a horror movie. The concept in itself is scary enough to be the entire point of a horror movie. The movie adds other elements and thats the problem. Too many topics, not enough time.
Everything is fine until the 1 hour mark, from then on it gets absurd. The actions are irrational, the pacing is all over the place, it's hard to follow whatever is happening and the character "development" is a total mess.
So, to eveyone reading this; i propose you try something new. Just watch the first hour. The moment they run away, just turn it off and let it be. Tell yourself it was a good movie and you enjoyed it and just act as if thats where the movie ends. Better than to watch the rest of it.
Spriggan (2022)
watch the movie instead
Couldn't even finish the first episode due to boredom. It's a cliche anime that has nothing to do with the movie. The target audience are 16yo boys, for those it surely is a funny actionpacked anime with an OP protagonist. But if you've seen enough shonen anime and you're looking for more substance in characters or story, this anime has nothing to offer for you.
Apart from that, the animation is good and the action scenes are not overdone.
Instead i recommend watching the original spriggan movie from 1998. And maybe watch akira from 1988 first, afaik both movies take place in the same universe.
Lost in Translation (2003)
slow paced, funny, and oddly familiar
Not much use to write a review after it already has 2k.
Watching this film in 2021 reminds me of what a good movie actually is. Not overly sexual, no unnecessary action or forced comedy and most importantly it doesn't try to forcefully push some kind of "message". Just a plain good movie. Some will find it boring, but others will love it. A movie not made to comply with everyone but just a few. That's how movies should be made. I love it.
First Signal (2021)
really bad movie with manipulated ratings
Not sure why my first review was delete, so here we go again;
The movie is bad. The acting is very bad, even amateurs would do a better job. The visuals are on a very basic level, which isn't that bad considering the tone of the movie and the story basically playing in a single room. The only decent thing about it is the story.
Overall the movie was utterly dissapointing and i can only guess they either put more effort into fake ratings than the movie or most of us have watched a different movie.
Undergods (2020)
It's been decades since i saw such a dark "movie"
Atmosphere, acting and music are perfect and i only say movie in quotes because it's actually 3 unrelated short stories. Watching them is not fun and it isn't meant to be fun. It's the kind of dark movie we can't really show anymore because people won't see the point, mainly because there simply is none.
The stories follow normal people trying to cope with a highly unusual situation and failing in a (imho) very human way. Again, it's got no action nor comedy, it is just dark with a bit of mystery. But if you disregard the standards of today's sensational entertainment, it is an incredibly good movie.
