Dead Asleep (2021)
5/10
Solid forensic analysis but not very balanced
4 February 2022
If you're interested in parasomnias and automatonism defences then this has some good explanations. However, this documentary was made without the blessing of the victim's family and the lack of detail about the victim is rather glaring and feels inappropriate. The commentary about Randy's upbringing with women and the pressures of masculinity are spot-on and extremely important in the context of male violence and femicide so please ignore the butthurt comments from the ignorant present on this IMDB page.

Crushed potential
27 October 2004
I really liked this show!

Yet another piece of evidence to add to the "US networks need to open their eyes to the quality and stop pulling the plug on good shows" pile. I saw a few episodes of this on French TV - it was pretty successful in France for its brief run, magazines were full of it. I particularly liked the episode "Live Fast, Die Young" which featured Paige Moss (Buffy guest star) - it reminded me of a teenage version of the X files. This show had a fantastic concept, loads of potential for twists and character development, but hey, what can we do?

Also, you can tell a lot about a show from its opening credits. With a theme tune like that it would have gone far - excellent mission statement:

"What you don't know can't hurt you, what you look for might get you."

Rescue Me (2002– )
Why no 2nd series?
16 October 2004
I've always remembered this which is why I have googled it now in late 2004. I thought it was great and I took it for granted that there would be a second series but for some reason it never came. Shame, really.

I actually looked up Oliver Chris, now in Green Wing - and by a 6 degrees of kind of chain I ended up remembering he was part of this show. Stewart Wright I remember too - he's been in Coupling since and all sorts.

I can't remember there being anything wrong at all with this show - it was funny, characters were likable and it had a plot good enough to hold viewers. The BBC can be a bit daft sometimes.

Good movie, bad adaptation
24 April 2004
Music perfect. Cast good. Style good. Plot - drivel.

If the book hadn't been written, it would be a very credible film. If you have read the book and find it difficult to accept changes you'll never be open-minded enough to like it. The plot has been changed far too much, for reasons that aren't really good enough to be forgiven. The book is such a mix of many different plots and ideas, they couldn't all be included. Akasha's character is not developed enough and the exclusion of Mekare doesn't really work, however hard they have tried.

However, the one theme it does focus on it brings out superbly: the "Lestat the rock-star" idea. Stuart Townsend is perfectly cast for this (as for having the wrong hair colour, just get over it) and the Jonathan Davis has done a fantastic job with both the source music and his first ever film score. Stuart Townsend's incarnation of Lestat the rock God is enthralling, sexy and magnetic, which saves this film. Aliyah's Akasha was brilliant - for such a young actress she embodied a 400 year old Egyptian Queen remarkably. Shame we won't get to see her in other roles. She has left behind such indications of potential.

If you're not too much of an Anne Rice fundamentalist, and you can put the books behind you, you can enjoy this film. When it is good, it is very very good. If you dwell on the bad, you'll hate it.

About Adam (2000)
10/10
Sexy, funny, feelgood, original.
24 April 2004
I think this film is fantastic. Don't get me wrong I am am extremely shallow sometimes and yes I did only get this film because Stuart Townsend was in it. But I was pleasantly surprised. Normally, all romantic comedies are more or less the same. This one has a hell of a difference. It raises a lot of questions and left me doubting some of the values we take for granted. The 3 sisters are very different and they allow the audience to see Adam behaving in very different ways towards each of them. It is interesting that we never see Adam's point of view, leaving us wondering which is the real Adam, concluding that he must be all of the things we see him as.

Ladies (and men who are so inclined): Stuart's worth it just by himself. Irish accents all around. Watch this film.
