Mr Bates vs. The Post Office (2024)
Drama of the finest quality
A well written, casted, acted and directed drama. This drama perfectly highlighting the disgraceful behaviour of the Post Office against its own precious sub postmaster. Adding insult to injury, this whole sordid affair continues still with the Post Office still refusing to accept complete responsibility and adequately compensating the people who's lives it destroyed. Perhaps the public inquiry will delve deeply into wrongdoing within the Post Office and perhaps the right criminals might face justice.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this production. A very worthwhile story that needed to be told.
The Gilded Age (2022)
Sound mixer needs a hearing test
I like this show but I am increasingly frustrated by the sound. The background hussle and bustle is important, yes, but not at the expense of dialog. Even the musical score tends to drown out the actors. I found that I kept nudging up the volume only to discover it made matters worse. The rewind button is needed regularly to figure out what is being said.
Someone should fire the sound guy, but he probably wouldn't hear you.
The outdoor sets are impressive but as must only have a few as they get used and reused over and over. I know these production cost are prohibitive but good CG now is pretty hard to spot.
Picket Fences (1992)
Terrific early David E Kelly show
Please God would some streaming platform who broadcast in the UK please add this full show. Apart from series 1, it can't be bought (unless on an 'suspect' poor quality DVD set). I've watched it many times but could go again.......and again.......and again.
The Father (2020)
A masterclass!!
This movie is a masterclass in writing, directing, editing, and last but certainly not least, acting.
This is a story told and visualised from one perspective and it achieves the desired affect of drawing the viewer in to the story and creates a vividly personal experience.
Anyone who has gone through this with a loved one in their own lives will not fail to be emotionally invested in Hopkins commanding performance.
If you haven't already, sit down, put your phone away for a couple of hours (the world won't end......promise) and thoroughly enjoy this film.
Top Gear: Episode #32.1 (2022)
Been there.........done that!!
This has been all done before, and done much better. Having always loved Top Gear with the Clarkson crew, I REALLY tried over and over to support and enjoy the format, I have struggled. Whilst I believe the current trio are the best combination they have tried, I can't agree with some who seem to like the natural comradery of the three. I find the chemistry forced and false.
There is a great Top Gear motoring programme which gets full marks with genuine chemistry and friendship shining through and it's called The Grand Tour.
Clarkson's Farm (2021)
Great fun!!!
I'm surprised Mr Clarkson has any testes left and that!! More of the usual Top Gear / Grand Tour buffoonery if you like that sort of stuff. Personally I can't get enough of it. I enjoy Jeremy's, Richards and James's solo work but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss the comeradery and banter when together.
Don't know if any more are planned but there is a lot more fun to be had here.
Lost Lives (2019)
Moving and insightful
Having lived through all of this (only just), this is a heartbreaking documentary which depicts the futility of this conflict. Yes, we don't always agree, yes, we may have very different visions of the future, but do we really gain anything by murdering each other?
"Those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it"
Let's hope not.
The Grand Tour: Funeral for a Ford (2019)
Tears tripping me
In the name of the baby Jesus will some network not commission a new series.
Yes the road trips are great fun, the reviews illuminating and the track laps positively awesome but the interaction between the hosts and with the audience is a treat.
Keep a stiff upper lip Mr Clarkson, Hammond and May, all I hope is not lost. Maybe the deep pockets of Netflix will come to the rescue.
